After a brief cooldown Sunday night, a new wave of hot, dry weather is expected to stoke the Swan Lake wildfire burning on the Kenai Peninsula -- with continued smoke and record-breaking temperatures forecast for the Fourth of July holiday week across Southcentral Alaska.

And in Interior Alaska, a wildfire burned close to cabins and homes in the Fairbanks area Sunday.

Residents of a handful of subdivisions in the Murphy Dome area northwest of Fairbanks were told to evacuate early Sunday morning due to the 5,000-acre Shovel Creek Fire. About 52 homes are in the evacuation area, according to Fairbanks North Star Borough Emergency Operations. Three other subdivisions are under evacuation alert.

The Swan Lake fire has been burning in an area of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge since June 5.

As of Sunday, the fire was at 68,060 acres with 17 percent contained, said Jonathan Ashford, a spokesman for the Alaska Incident Management Team. There are now 487 firefighters and other personnel working the fire.

Snow fell in Kilpisjärvi on Saturday, and night frosts are possible in central Finland.

As most of the rest of Europe suffers record heat, Finland's weather is quite different. On Saturday, wet snow fell around 4 pm in the village of Kilpisjärvi. It's located in the municipality of Enontekiö at the top of Finnish Lapland's northwestern arm, close to the borders with Norway and Sweden.

There was little accumulation from the flurry, which was recorded by a traffic camera on European route E8, a road that extends from Turku, southwest Finland, up to Tromsø, northern Norway, also known as the Four Winds' Road. Near the village, the route reaches an elevation of 565.8 metres, the highest point in the Finnish road system.

France has hit its highest recorded temperature - 45.9C (114.6F) - amid a heatwave in Europe that has claimed several lives.

Comment: This is an astonishing 1.5 degrees higher than the previous all-time record.

The new record was measured in the southern town of Gallargues-le-Montueux. Before this year the previous record was 44.1C during a heatwave in 2003 that killed thousands.

Comment: Actually, the previous high was 44C, set in Toulouse in August 1923.

2003 was exceptional in that temperatures remained high all summer long, but it was never quite this intense. It is, however, forecast to cool off in Europe by next week...

Health Minister Agnès Buzyn has said "everyone is at risk".

France's weather service has issued an unprecedented red alert for four areas.

Those are all in the south, but most of the country remains on orange alert, the second highest level.

June snowfall again blankets highway west of Okanagan, Canada

snow highway
As travelers look to hit the roads for the Canada Day Long Weekend, the last thing on their minds is snow.

But that's what's coming down on the Okanagan Connector.

An unseasonably cold weather front caused temperatures to plummet at the Pennask Summit on Highway 97C, at 1,717 metres or 5,600 feet elevation, turning rain into snow on Thursday evening.

The area saw at least one rollover crash as the storm hit.

As darkness falls, the temperature could fall below zero turning snowy and wet roads into ice.

Comment: A week ago June snowfall hit the same highway in British Columbia for 2 days in a row.

Unexpected summer snow hits W. Mongolia

An "abnormal" summer snowfall has hit a western Mongolian province, a local meteorological department said Friday.

The meteorologist explained that the unseasonal snow was brought by a strong cyclone from the Siberia.

Bayan-Ulgii Province is located in the west of Mongolia and shares borders with both China and Russia.
