Rare snowfall blankets Athens as temperatures across Greece hit record lows

The ancient monuments in Athens got a rare dusting of snow on Tuesday as temperatures across Greece hit record lows, bringing transport to a standstill in some areas.

While early morning tourists at the Acropolis were treated to a snow-globe scene, locals had to contend with roads made impassable by ice and many schools were closed in the Athens region.

In northern Greece, where an all-time low of -23 C was recorded in the city of Florina, highways, rail and bus services were disrupted.

Heavy rain and snow was reported on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, which is more used to protracted periods of drought.

Weekend storms deliver 3 feet of snow to Lake Tahoe ski resorts

Tahoe area ski resorts got a big boost from several weekend storms that moved through the region over the weekend.

After reporting 6 inches of new snow following the first storm, Diamond Peak Ski Resort received an additional 30 inches of new snow from Sunday's storm for a weekend total of 36 inches.

Similarly, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe reports 32-36 inches of new snow following the weekend storms.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort, which has received an impressive 140 inches of snow so far this season, is reporting 32 new inches of snow.

Three skiers and two snowshoe hikers have died as heavy snow and avalanches hit Austria, isolating several areas of the mountainous country, authorities said Monday.

Two German skiers lost their lives in avalanches in the western region of Vorarlberg on Sunday, and a Slovenian died in the region of Salzburg, rescue services said.

The bodies of two missing snowshoe hikers were discovered Monday as snow caused chaos in parts of the country, blocking roads and shuttering schools.

Two other hikers are still missing in the country's northeast.

The National Weather Service has issued avalanche warnings for the Sierra Nevada Sunday after a winter storm dumped heavy snow on the region.

The Sierra Avalanche Center issued a backcountry avalanche warning for the Lake Tahoe area stretching south into the Sierra along the California-Nevada line from noon Sunday until 7 a.m. Monday.

The National Weather Service says blizzard conditions with gale-force winds could trigger widespread avalanche activity.

Two feet (61 centimeters) of snow was reported at Mammoth Mountain 150 miles (241.39 kilometers) south of Tahoe.

Authorities warned Sunday of a high risk of avalanches on the northern side of the Alps, after heavy snowfall in recent days created dangerous conditions across parts of southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

A 20-year-old skier died in an avalanche Saturday on Mount Teisen, near the Austrian border, German police said. The woman's five companions were unharmed.

In Austria, public broadcaster ORF reported that a 26-year-old man died Sunday after being struck by an avalanche while skiing near the town of Schoppernau.

The heavy snowfall left by the fifth and sixth winter storms of the season, as well as the extreme cold, generated frost damage in thousands of crops throughout the state of Sonora.

The weather mainly affected the garlic and asparagus crops in the mountains and the north of the state; as well as vegetable and legume crops in the valleys of Yaqui and Mayo, south of Sonora.

So far, the presidents of the Associations of Farmer Unions of Sonora have not specified how many hectares were affected because the damage is still rising. In addition, according to official weather forecasts, the low temperatures will continue the following days and its possible there will be more snowfall.

Istanbul and the region of Thrace in Turkey's northwest were hit by heavy snowfall and strong wind which caused flight delays.

Turkish Airlines cancelled its Jan. 4 Salonika and Kosice international flights as well as many of its domestic flights taking off from Istanbul's Atatürk and Sabiha Gökçen airports due to the weather conditions.

Istanbul's higher areas, such as the district of Beylikdüzü, were hit by snowfall on Jan. 3 night along with strong winds.

Following warnings of harsher weather conditions by the Turkish State Meteorological Service, snowplows and salt trucks were waiting ready to intervene in the event of possible icing.

Snow swept across 17 provinces namely West Azarbaijan, Ardebil, Isfahan, Alborz, Tehran, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, North Khorasan, Fars, Semnan, Zanjan, Qazvin, Qom, Kordestan, Gilan, Lorestan, Mazandaran, and Markazi, Tasnim news agency quoted Salimi as saying on Friday.

Some 90 rescue teams comprising 320 rescue workers offered relief and rescue service, Salimi highlighted.

Meanwhile, some 4,100 who were stranded in the snow storm received relief services and 656 cars stuck in snow were released, he added.

The storm that moved across B.C. over the past 72 hours has left many areas of the province cleaning up on Friday.

No weather alerts remain in place for the province but parts of Vancouver Island remain under high streamflow advisories.

The Englishman River and Little Qualicum River on Vancouver Island were under a flood watch following the downpour but Friday afternoon it was downgraded to a high streamflow advisory.

High stream advisories remain in place for part of Vancouver Island, the North Shore, Fraser Valley, Howe Sound and Sunshine Coast.

From 8 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 2, to 9 a.m., Friday, Jan. 4, many areas of B.C. saw a huge dumping of snow.
