The forecast for Sunday's winter storm was spot on and resulted in record-breaking snow for parts of Texas.

Sunday, January 10, 2021, will go down in history for record snowfall for Central and North Texas. This winter storm was the second in just over a week to blanket the Lone Star State with wintry weather.

The forecast called for the heaviest snow from the Panhandle to Central Texas, and it was verified by Sunday evening with record snowfall for Austin and Waco.

Reports ranged from one to 9 inches from Central to North Texas. There were widespread 4 to 6-inch totals north of Austin to just south of Dallas. There were reports of even higher 6 to 9-inch totals south of I-20 and west of I-35.

Disturbance began in France

Quoting energy expert Dr. Michael Schneeberger, "The disturbance in the European grid was triggered in France. Already on January 7, France's RTE (Le Réseau de Transport de l'Électricité) was forced to take essential parts of the electricity-intensive industry off the power grid. The RED alert level was ordered for the entire network of France."

Snoqualmie Pass, Washington sees 23 inches of new snow in 24 hours, reports record-breaking snow this winter

Snoqualmie Pass has been hit hard and has seen record-breaking snow this winter.

As of 8 a.m. Tuesday, the pass saw 23 inches of snow in a 24-hour span.

The Washington State Department of Transportation said the current snowpack is at 102 inches, which is rare for January and the accumulative snowfall as of January 12 was 236 inches - the highest in 10 years.

All of that said, if you are heading across the pass, make sure you are prepared for winter driving. Keep chains in your vehicle and take it slow to avoid slide-offs or collisions.

The south of France has suffered exceptionally chilly temperatures this winter, with reports calling it "a winter like no other".

Woolly hats, coats, scarves and gloves are a strange sight along the Côte d'Azur (aka the French Riviera), reports monaco-tribune.com, even at this time of year. Normally, a light jacket is all that is needed to keep warm under the winter sun, but temperatures at the close of 2020 and the during the first third of January 2021 have held a baguette-clasping 6 to 7 degrees Celsius below average.

The French Riviera is susceptible to two different types of cold, explains weather expert Paul Marquis in an article on francetvinfo.fr: "Arctic maritime air comes from the North Pole, from the north-west — it's a moist air, it's humid. Continental air comes from Russia — it's much drier, and that is what we are experiencing along the coastline at the moment," says Marquis.

As recently as November, 2020 we were warned by François Guerquin, Director of Plan Bleu, the Mediterranean arm of the UN's Environment Programme, that "the future of the Mediterranean is at a tipping point."

Guerquin had a hand in the influential The State of Environment and Development in the Mediterranean Report (RED 2020) which evaluates the impact of climate change on the Mediterranean basin.

300 trucks blocked in Spain due to record snowfall

Filomena, the first snowstorm of the year in Spain, which has also brought cold and rain, and which arrived on Thursday in the Peninsula, forced 300 large trucks to remain in an area enabled for them in the industrial estate of Bulilla, in the outskirts of the municipality of Villena, where they were diverted by traffic police agents due to the risk posed by the movement of heavy vehicles on the A-31 highway, in the direction of Albacete.

At about 10:30 am on Friday, the agents allowed the drivers bound for Valencia to continue their route, but the rest of the vehicles were forced to wait.

Red Cross volunteers arrived in the area to offer drivers food kits, hot coffee and blankets to allow them to combat the low temperatures that are being recorded in the province.

Heavy snows force hikers to retreat to mountain hut

Fifty centimeters of snow has accumulated on the cirque just below the summit of Snow Mountain, forcing most hiking teams to retreat to the 369 mountain hut for safety.

The Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters said on Monday (Jan. 11) that according to the reports of patrolling volunteers, Snow Mountain received considerable snowfall during the cold wave last week. After a letup in the daytime on Sunday, snow began to fall on the mountain again around 9 p.m. Sunday night, which continued all of Monday, according to a CNA report.

By Monday evening, there was 50 cm of snow accumulation on the cirque, 30 cm in the Black Forest, and 25 cm at the 369 mountain hut.

Snow in Belgrade, Serbia

Days of heavy rain and snow across the Balkans left homes and fields flooded Monday, disrupted traffic on highways and at ports and caused power outages.

In Serbia, authorities on Monday started clearing up tons of garbage that was clogging a southwestern lake after it was swept off from landfills by overflowing rivers. Emergency measures were announced in the southern Doljevac and Vlasotince municipalities, where rescue teams helped more than two dozen people evacuate their homes.

The state RTS television reported that numerous homes, barns and fields were flooded and villages were left without drinking water after days of rain and snow around the southern town of Leskovac and nearby areas.

In central and eastern Serbia, thousands of people were left without electricity as heavy snow collapsed distribution lines. Serbia's state power company EPS said Monday they were working to restore power.

Many Vietnamese have been drawn to the northern highlands, including Sa Pa, as thick white snow blanketed the region.

Due to drizzles at low temperature, snow has covered O Quy Ho mountain pass in Lai Chau Province and Sa Pa, a popular tourist town in Lao Cai Province, since Sunday night.

At a height of 1,500 meters above sea level, Sa Pa has recorded temperatures dropping to minus one degree Celsius on Monday and in Sin Ho mountainous district of Lai Chau, to minus two degrees Celsius.

Temperatures on Mau Son Mount of Lang Son Province have risen by one to two degrees Celsius against prior days to 0.5 degrees Celsius and in Dong Van Town in Ha Giang, to two degrees Celsius.

Spain has just experienced a number of its coldest ever days recorded in history.

On Thursday (7 Jan), a record breaking temperature of -35.8C was registered at the Vega de Liordes weather station, situated at an altitude of 1,874 metres in the northwestern province of Leon.

The temperature was confirmed by AEMET weather agency, and just narrowly beat out the record breaking temperature recorded the day before in the eastern Pyrenees.

On Wednesday (6 Jan), a meteorological station in the Catalan Pyrenees recorded a temperature of -34.1C.

Vehicles were stranded and train services affected Saturday as heavy snow continued over parts of Japan, with the weather agency warning of further traffic disruption from slippery roads due to more snowfall through the weekend.

In central Japan, many cars were stuck. Around 120 vehicles were stranded on the Hokuriku Expressway in Fukui Prefecture due to an accident. About 80 cars could not move on the Noetsu Expressway in Toyama Prefecture, with a section temporarily closed, transport authorities said.

Separately, about 80 vehicles were stuck temporarily on part of the Hokuriku Expressway in Niigata Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo.
