Heaviest snow in 30 years engulfs parts of Xinjiang, China

video
A once-in-three decades snowstorm has brought between 0.85 and 1 meter thick of snowfall to the Kizilsu Kirghiz Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region earlier this week.

This heaviest snowfall in thirty years has caused difficulties with feeding the sheep herds apart from affecting local traffic.

In all, over 60,000 heads of sheep and horses are threatened by acute fodder shortage, while 425 heads of animals were already dead due to various reasons including snow collapsed sheep pens.

In response to this rare climatic abnormaity, local authorities have mobilized heavy-duty machineries to clear the snow to reconnect traffic. The first shipment of 775 tons of fodder has already reached snow-affected pastures.

Strange weather, new strains of rust and blight; global cold weather crop losses

The plant disease threatens the world's crops
The plant disease threatens the world's crops
New unidentified strains of blight and wheat rust have emerged on our planet which are causing 100% losses in the fields. Yellow rust continues to spread unchecked, but is now merging with as yet un-named strains of pathogens to create a super-rust strain. Crop losses around the planet continue with cold damage and now the hard freeze in the USA S.E. will reduce orchard output by 70%. India moves to WhatsApp pay to connect local farmers with local buyers.

300 vehicles stuck on Quebec highway for 14 hours during snowstorm

Snow time
A clearly unhappy Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre says he intends to get to the bottom of how 300 vehicles - and their occupants — were stuck on the lanes of southbound Highway 13 for close to 14 hours Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

"It was a minor problem but a major one for the people who were stuck in it on Highway 13," Coderre told a meeting of the city's executive committee Wednesday morning. "Personally, I find it unacceptable that people were stuck for 13 or 14 hours before things were unblocked.

"What's clear is that I'm going to shed some light on this. In 2017, 13 hours in the same situation. I know there was a big storm and a pile-up (on the highway). But I think we should be asking why it took so long to get things sorted out, especially since the northbound 13 was clear... We need some answers."

Traffic has been completely stopped with heavy snow lasting for multiple days in China's northwest Shaanxi province.

The sleety weather has embraced most parts of northwest China's Shaanxi Province since Saturday night, bringing the temperature down by around 10 degrees Celsius. Though the long-anticipated snow clad the region in silvery white, it caused numerous traffic difficulties for residents and with 50 centimeters of snow, some highways have been completely blocked.

On a key provincial highway located on the northern side of the Qinling Mountains, a tree collapsed because of the heavy snow and fell on a passing truck.

"I heard a 'bang' while driving. I did not know what it was and it just scared me. The truck swayed. I stopped the truck and got off to see what exactly happened. It was the fallen tree," said a truck driver.

Time-lapse video shows 19 inches of snow settle over night in Apalachin, New York

video
This time-lapse video illustrates perfectly just how much snow can fall in a few hours.

Ron Murphy uploaded the time-lapse video of snow falling in Apalachin, N.Y., just as parts of the east coast were hit with heavy amounts of snow. The time-lapse was compiled from images taken once every minute.

"A persistent band of snow stayed over the house from about 2:30 am to this typing," Murphy wrote on YouTube. "At the end of the video the snow is about 19 inches. So there is a wall of snow between the camera and other stuff."

"'Ice House' is real, folks. 5 days of wind whipped Lake Ontario in WNY will do that," he tweeted.
