Cold front brings snowfall to the Canary Islands

With heavy rainfall throughout the night, including on much of the north and inland areas of Gran Canaria, a cold front wet weather system known as a "gota fria" (cold drop) or DANA (Depresión Aislada a Niveles Altas - high level isolated depression) has deposited a blanket of snow, this Wednesday, at the summits of of Tenerife and La Palma islands, with meteorologists warning it could also do so on the island of Gran Canaria, ahead of a return to Calima desert sands arriving from the east, expected by the weekend.

Southern resort areas are most likely to escape the worst of it, however most places are likely to see cloudy wet weather over the coming days.

Southern Ocean storms cause outgassing of carbon dioxide

Researchers have examined the inaccessible waters around Antarctica using unique robot technology, and find that ocean storms in the region lead to outgassing of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Storms over the waters around Antarctica drive an outgassing of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, according to a new international study with researchers from the University of Gothenburg. The research group used advanced ocean robots for the study, which provides a better understanding of climate change and can lead to better global climate models.

The world's southernmost ocean, the Southern Ocean that surrounds Antarctica, plays an important role in the global climate because its waters contain large amounts of carbon dioxide. A new international study, in which researchers from the University of Gothenburg participated, has examined the complex processes driving air-sea fluxes of gasses, such as carbon dioxide.

Storms bring carbon dioxide-rich waters to the surface

The research group is now delivering new findings that shed light on the area's important role in climate change.

"We show how the intense storms that often occur in the region increase ocean mixing and bring carbon dioxide-rich waters from the deep to the surface. This drives an outgassing of carbon dioxide from the ocean to the atmosphere. There has been a lack of knowledge about these complex processes, so the study is an important key to understanding the Southern Ocean's significance for the climate and the global carbon budget", says Sebastiaan Swart, professor of oceanography at the University of Gothenburg and co-author of the study.

What's left of the snowstorm that dumped more than two feet in a couple far western Kansas counties began to taper off Tuesday night, but with cold temperatures forecast over the next few days, melting won't happen quickly.

While Interstate 70 reopened earlier Tuesday evening with the storm finally letting up, the impact on travel continued into late Tuesday night. Highways in southwest Kansas were also impacted by the snow. US-54 closed earlier Tuesday evening after a semi crash. For a few hours, this stranded some travelers in Pratt.

Snow blankets Athens, Greek islands and Turkey's Istanbul

The city of Athens with the Parthenon temple atop the ancient Acropolis hill is covered with snow during a snowfall, on Monday, Jan. 24, 2022.The wave of bad weather hitting Greece is forecast to continue through Tuesday, and has seen snow falling even on some islands. Authorities have warned the public to avoid all but essential outdoor movement, and several major roads and highways are passable only with snow chains.
Athens, Greece — Heavy snowfall disrupted air and road traffic Monday in the Greek capital of Athens and neighboring Turkey's largest city of Istanbul, while most of Greece, including — unusually — several Aegean islands, and much of Turkey were blanketed by snow.

The storm, named in Greece Elpida, or "hope," snarled traffic in both Athens and Istanbul, a metropolis of 16 million people.

Flights in and out of Istanbul Airport were suspended until 4 a.m. Tuesday (0100 GMT). Authorities worked to clear runways and a road leading to the airport, where the roof of a facility used by Turkish Airlines' cargo department collapsed from the weight of snow. No one was hurt.

Authorities in Istanbul also suspended intercity bus services and temporarily blocked travel to the city from Turkey's Thrace region. People stranded on roads abandoned vehicles to walk home or crowded subway and other public transportation stations. Schools across Turkey are closed for a winter break, but universities halted classes for two days. Public offices and shopping malls closed early to ease rush-hour congestion.

Flurries were forecast to continue over the next few days in Istanbul. The Turkish city's Disaster Coordination Center AKOM said an Icelandic low-pressure system is behind the cold front and precipitation.

In Greece, authorities warned the public to limit outdoor movements to only essential ones on Monday and Tuesday, while schools in many areas were closed. Government spokesman Giannis Oikonomou said more than 46,000 school classes were being held online.

Malkae Kohsar has received 3 feet of snow and Galyat 4 feet.

On the other hand, roads have been blocked in the six districts of Azad Kashmir because of snowfall and heavy showers.

Heavy snowfall blocks over 730 roads in Himachal Pradesh, India - up to 6 feet of snow

snow
Heavy snowfall in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh since Saturday night has brought life to a standstill, particularly in tribal areas.

More than 730 roads, including four national highways, have been blocked for traffic due to the inclement weather.

Maximum 289 roads are closed in Shimla and 181 in Lahaul-Spiti.

Lahaul-Spiti superintendent of police Manav Verma said the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang (ATR) has been closed for traffic.

The Manali-Leh highway is closed for all types of vehicles (from Solang to Sissu) due to heavy snowfall in Lahaul Valley.
There is almost three feet of snow in the Valley. The weather is mostly cloudy and snowfall is continuing, he said.

Over 700 electricity transformers, mostly in Shimla, Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba have been hit due to the snowfall, causing the suspension of power supply in the remote areas. Over 100 water supply schemes have also been hit.

Australian town records hottest day on record
A remote coastal town in Western Australia, Onslow, registered a temperature of 50.7C, matching its hottest ever recorded temperature. The record was first set in 1960.

While several parts of the globe are battling extremely cold conditions, Australia is recording high temperatures.

Not just Onslow, but other Western Australian sites including Roebourne airport and Mardie also hit 50.5C.

Several other towns in the region are also likely to set temperature records for January or any time of the year. Iron-ore export hub Karratha reached 48.4C as it exceeded its previous high of 48.2C.
