Heavy snowstorms spread across Morocco blocking 38 roads (VIDEOS)

As the cold weather is set to continue, snowstorms across the country have closed several roads on Monday, the Ministry of Transport has said.

Snowstorms have blocked 38 roads, according to the ministry, which was quoted by Moroccan news outlet Hespress.

The Ministry has managed to open 44 roads in various regions of the country after they were blocked due to heavy snowstorms.

Among the national roads that are still blocked: Road N. 13, which links between Azrou, Tamhidit and Medelt, and the road N19 that links in Tindara.

Heavy snow, some on a record scale, hitting the Sea of Japan coast is continuing to cause widespread disruption to lives and transportation.

The Meteorological Agency says snow clouds are persisting due to a minus 12 degrees Celsius air mass hovering some 1,500 meters above the region. It says this kind of cold air mass usually comes just once in several years.

As of 1PM Tuesday, 1.58 meters of snowfall had accumulated in Hakusan City, 1.34 meters in Fukui City, and 68 centimeters in Kanazawa City.

In Fukui, the snowfall was the heaviest since 1981 and more than 6 times the average.

1,500 vehicles stuck in heavy snow

About 1,500 cars and trucks are stuck on a 10-kilometer section of a road in Fukui Prefecture due to a snowstorm on Tuesday.

A team of rescuers from the Ground Self-Defense Force arrived at the scene in Awara City around 3:15 PM, following a request from Fukui Governor Issei Nishikawa.

The rescuers plan to clear the snow and provide food for people in the vehicles.

Snow covered the town of Ain Sefra in Algeria - the second time in just a few weeks
Locals were stunned to see snow on the sand dunes in the Sahara Desert yesterday - after it snowed in a small Algerian town for the second time this year.

Following a 37-year spell of no snow which ended in December 2016, Ain Sefra in the country's northwest, has seen snow no less than four times.

Children could be seen playing on the snow-covered sand dunes just outside the town, while others posed on the snow to document the rare event.

The town was seen covered with a coating of snow and many locals took to the nearby sand dunes to enjoy the unusual weather.

While Monday's snowfall was unusual, the town was covered in the white stuff last month, the third time in nearly 40 years.

Weather warnings are still in place across most of Spain as more than 300 roads have been affected by the recent bad weather.

The AP-6 has been closed from kilometre 60 to 110 heading to Madrid due to ice, while a lorry has tipped over on the A-1 forcing its closure.

Parts of Alicante are also experiencing slow traffic, especially on the A-79 and A-31.

The bad weather is expected to continue until at least Wednesday, with more snow in northern and central Spain and Cataluña as well as parts of Andalucia.

Even the football has been affected by the drop in temperatures.

Swiss police say they've stopped a Swedish bus that was traveling along a highway with more than 1.6 tons of snow on its roof.

Police in Solothurn canton (state) said Sunday that the bus was reported to officers on Saturday afternoon. They stopped it on the A1 highway near Oensingen and found that it was carrying more than 40 centimeters (16 inches) of snow on its roof.

The driver was ordered to clear off the snow.

Snow is cleared outside U.S. Bank Stadium Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, in Minneapolis. The New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles are scheduled to play the NFL Super Bowl 52 football game in the stadium Sunday.
Sunday's Super Bowl is expected to be the coldest on record with temperatures in the low single digits around the 5:30 p.m. CT kickoff. Factor in the winds of around 10 mph, and it will feel like it's well below zero.

Granted, the game is indoors, but officials here are warning those who will attend Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium to be prepared - especially as the tightened security measures could lead to longer waits to get inside.

"This is very important for us to make sure that people who are coming here and visiting for the Super Bowl to please dress appropriately," NFL security chief Cathy Lanier said this week. "Even if you are only out for a few minutes, it can get quite cold here. You need to dress in layers, hats, gloves, scarves covering your extremities (and) comfortable shoes or boots."

At least one person died and several were injured after Moscow experienced its heaviest day of snowfall since records began, the city's mayor and agencies said Sunday.

Russia's meteorological service said Moscow had seen more than half its average monthly snowfall in the space of 24 hours, with 43 centimetres (17 inches) blanketing the capital by Sunday morning, agencies reported.

"One person died from a falling tree that hit an electric power line," Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on his VKontakte social media page, adding that 360 trees had already been brought down by the extreme weather.

Grande Prairie nearly doubles snowfall record Feb 2018
Grande Prairie got 23.2 centimetres of snow Friday, nearly doubling the previous record and topping off five days straight of heavy snowfall. The previous record snowfall for February 2nd was 12.2 centimetres set back in 1999.

RCMP issued a travel advisory Friday, due to snow and icy road conditions, especially along Highway 40. Since Monday, 51.2 centimetres of snow has fallen in the city.

Winter took its time coming to southern Finland this year, but recent snowstorms put an end to mild conditions there. The coming week will see temperatures drop throughout the country.

A high pressure front will move in over Finland this weekend, bringing below-zero temperatures that will linger for over a week. The drop in the mercury will combine with scattered snowfall in places to make road conditions hazardous.

Weather forecasts say temperatures of up to minus 10 degrees Celsius will be seen in the south, growing colder as the crow flies north.

The coldest week of the winter could be just around the corner, with most of the population likely to see a few flakes of the white stuff.

A series of weather warnings are in place, forecasting snow and ice from Sunday and throughout next week, the Met Office said.

The mercury could plummet as low as minus 7C (19.4F) in some parts of the UK, while the bulk of the population can expect to shiver through sub-zero temperatures.
