Tsunami warning issued after shallow 7.5 magnitude earthquake strikes off Russia's Kamchatka

A tsunami warning has been issued for the coastal areas of Russia's Far East after a strong earthquake off the coast of Kamchatka. Waves are said to be possible within 300 kilometers of the epicenter.

The quake was registered on Friday morning local time, at the depth of 33 kilometers (20 miles) under the Bering Sea, some 80 kilometers east of the coast of Kamchatka.

There was no threat as of yet to Alaska, the continental US, or Hawaii, the US government's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The separation of stone blocks at Machu Picchu is due to an earthquake of at least magnitude 6.5 that struck around the year 1450.
Construction of Machu Picchu was interrupted around 1450 by a powerful earthquake, leaving damage still evident today and prompting the Inca to perfect the seismic-resistant megalithic architecture that is now so famous throughout Cusco, according to a major new scientific study revealed by Peru's state-run news agency Andina.

The Cusco-Pata Research Project determined that a temblor of at least magnitude 6.5 struck during the reign of the 9th Inca Pachacutec while he was building his now iconic summer estate atop the saddle-ridge between two craggy mountain peaks.

The multidisciplinary research project began in 2016, led by the Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute (Ingemmet), with the participation of experts from the United Kingdom, France and Spain.

"What we can see is that there was already construction underway with one type of architecture under Pachacutec," said the project coordinator Carlos Benavente. "Then, we believe in the middle of that construction of Machu Picchu, there was a major earthquake."

Climate historians estimate that major flooding on an unpredictable but increasingly frequent basis started as early as 1250. Extreme events like the Grote Mandrake flood of 1362 which killed at least 100,000 people became darkly repetitive.
The Little Ice Age, that is considered to have begun around the 13th century, stretching all the way into the 20th, and which afflicted much of the planet, was clearly accompanied by a much more diverse collection of catastrophic events, in Little Ice Age foiled Europeans' early exploration of North America it says:
Starting in the late 16th century, a series of volcanic eruptions likely chilled the Northern Hemisphere by as much as 1.8 degrees Celsius below the long-term average, White says.

An intense earthquake swarm in Mt. Herðubreið in the NE Central Highlands shows no sign of slowing down. Nearly two hundred quakes have been detected just south of the volcano since the swarm began shortly after nine yesterday morning. At quarter to seven yesterday evening the Herðubreið swarm was joined by a 3.4 magnitude quake in the central caldera of the Bárðarbunga system.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office located the epicenter of the 3.4 magnitude Bárðarbunga quake at a depth of only 800 m (o.5 mi) in the NE part of the caldera. A second 3.6 magnitude quake was detected in the same area on Monday morning.


Shallow 6.2 magnitude earthquake strikes off Easter Islands

An earthquake measuring 6.2 on Richter scale struck Easter Islands in South Pacific Ocean on Wednesday.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the jolts were registered at 7.07 am (IST) with its epicentre located in the southeastern part of the Easter Islands.

The focus of the earthquake was located at the depth of 10.0 kilometres.

No immediate casualties or damages have been reported.

Magnitude 5.6 earthquake strikes off the coast of Western Australia, no threat of a tsunami

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck 203 kilometres north-west of Carnarvon in the state's north-west on Sunday night, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres and struck at 10.26pm local time.


6.1-Magnitude earthquake strikes eastern Indonesia

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Papua, in eastern Indonesia Sunday, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake was about 158 kilometres (98 miles) south-southwest of the province's capital Jayapura at 6:42 pm (0942 GMT), at a depth of 61 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake was felt in Jayapura, but residents didn't panic, a military spokesman said.

"I felt it at home," Papua's military spokesman in Jayapura Dax Sianturi said.

Data from Kilauea suggests the eruption was unprecedented

A very large team of researchers from multiple institutions in the U.S. has concluded that the Kilauea volcanic eruption that occurred over this past summer represented an unprecedented volcanic event. In their paper published in the journal Science, the researchers describe the sequence of events that transpired and what set them apart from other volcanic eruptions.

Kilauea, a volcano on Hawaii's big island underwent a long, drawn-out eruption over this past summer. It made headlines due to the spread of lava that destroyed many homes and changed some of the island's landscape. And it is now making news again as data from the eruption reveals that it erupted in ways that have not been seen before.

Kilauea is the most active volcano in the world, and because of that, scientists have installed many sensors in and around the area in hopes of learning more about how it and other volcanoes work. Thus, the volcano's eruption in May provided massive amounts of data, offering an unprecedented view of the eruption.

The researchers discovered that the caldera did not collapse in a way that was expected. First, it deflated by approximately 500 meters. Second, it happened incrementally-62 times in all. They were also surprised to find that groundwater did not play much of a role in the explosions that resulted as the caldera collapsed-instead, they were caused by piston-type pressure resulting from each deflation.

4.4 temblor strikes parts of Tennessee, Georgia and the Carolinas along New Madrid fault

A 4.4. magnitude earthquake has struck parts of Tennessee, Georgia and the Carolinas and seismographs have also recorded a secondary shock in the area.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) traced the earthquake to Decatur, Tennessee, but it has been felt in neighboring states too.

The convulsion occurred along the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which is along the Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi state lines.

Earth's magnetic field may be headed for a cataclysm says latest French study

We've reported on Earth's magnetic field before, including studies claiming that the planet's poles may reverse at any time and studies saying that Earth is probably not headed for a polar reversal at all. At the heart of these studies is the undeniable, millennia-old weakening trend in the planet's magnetic field, which, depending on your point of view, is either a temporary phenomenon that will eventually reverse itself (as it has in the past), or the harbinger of a cataclysmic breakdown of the Earth's entire magnetic shield and a subsequent flip of the magnetic poles.

The most recent study from the EDIFICE project, a geophysical research initiative based in France, claims we're headed for a cataclysm. According to Dr. Nicolas Thouveny, one of the principal investigators for EDIFICE: "The geomagnetic field has been decaying for the last 3,000 years. If it continues to fall down at this rate, in less than one millennium we will be in a critical (period)."
