Indonesia's Banda Sea rocked by shallow 7.1 magnitude earthquake

BBBBBB
A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's Banda Sea on Wednesday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

No tsunami warning was issued for the quake - initially reported as a magnitude 6.9 - which hit at 11:53 a.m. local time (4.53 a.m. GMT), according to the USGS.

The tremor was felt moderately in the town of Saumlaki in the archipelago's Tanimbar Islands, according to the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency, or BMKG.

"The earthquake was quite intense. But the people here were not panicking. We are used to having earthquakes," Saumlaki resident Lambert Tatang told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Hospitals are packed with injured people in Aathbiskot municipality, Rukum West district
More than 150 people have been killed after an earthquake struck remote western Nepal on Friday.

Security forces have been deployed to help rescue efforts in the rugged districts of Jajarkot and West Rukum, 500km (310 miles) west of Kathmandu.

Strong tremors were felt far away in the Nepalese capital and in cities in neighbouring India, including Delhi.

The army spokesman said more than 100 people had been injured. Jajarkot's hospital is packed with the wounded.

"People are scared and staying outdoors," Rabi KC, mayor of Aathbiskot municipality told BBC.

Iceland's 'exceptional' volcanic unrest continues, 800 earthquakes yesterday, 10,500 since swarm began on October 25th

iceland quake swarm
GPS data from the last 24 hours indicate that uplift continues at a similar rate in the area northwest of Mt. Þorbjörn. Earthquake activity has been quite stable, but yesterday around 800 earthquakes were recorded in the area around Þorbjörn, and the largest was M3.7 at 12:56 am. Since midnight today, around 400 earthquakes have been recorded in the area, the largest measuring M2.8 at 9:51 am. More detailed analysis of recent GPS data confirms that a magma intrusion is forming at a depth of 4-5 km under the area northwest of Þorbjörn.

Comment: The largest quake recorded in Iceland so far today, 3rd November, was an M3.4.

It is important to note that seismic activity is will likely continue northwest of Þorbjörn, and earthquakes over M4.0 could be found in populated areas. Triggered seismic activity can also be expected in the coming days because the magma intrusion causes increased tension in the area. Rockfall can occur following strong earthquakes, so it is important to be cautious on steep slopes.

6.1-magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia's Timor island - USGS

mmmm
A 6.1-magnitude quake hit the eastern Indonesia island of Timor on Thursday, shaking the provincial capital and forcing residents to run outside, US seismologists said.

The quake struck at a depth of 36.1 kilometers (22.5 miles) on the west of Timor Island near the city of Kupang, according to the US Geological Survey.

Indonesia's geophysics agency, or BMKG, said the quake had a higher magnitude of 6.6.

The tremor was strongly felt in Kupang on the island split between Indonesian territory in the west and the sovereign state of East Timor in the east, according to an AFP journalist, but no casualties were reported.

Powerful 6.6-earthquake strikes off coast of Chile and felt in neighboring Argentina

MMMMM
A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck off the coast of northern Chile on Tuesday morning and was felt in several provinces of neighboring Argentina, but there were no immediate reports of damage and authorities said there was no tsunami risk.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at 9:33 a.m. local time (12:33 p.m. GMT), and its epicenter was 42 kilometers (26 miles) southwest of Huasco, a city in Chile's Atacama region. The quake had a depth of 35 kilometers (22 miles).

Chile's national emergency office did not report any damages or injuries, and the Chilean navy dismissed the possibility of a tsunami.

Earthquake hits with 'sound like thunder' and 'bang' that mystifies residents in Wales

An earthquake struck Anglesey last night measuring 1.3 on the Richter scale, with its epicentre recorded as Llanfigael, according to the British Geological Survey

Anglesey was hit by an earthquake last night, with terrified witnesses reporting a sound "like thunder".

The quake measured 1.3 on the Richter scale and its epicentre was in Llanfigael, according to the British Geological Survey. The exact time of the quake was 11.27pm, at a depth of 12km. Despite not being a large earthquake, a post on the North Wales Storm Watch Facebook group described the sound as "like thunder with a bang nothing like past quakes that we have had here also sounded like it was in the sky".

Comment: A airburst like a mini-Tunguska event? The small size of the quake, as opposed to the sound it made would seem to point in that direction.

Ground uplift continues at Thorbjorn Complex, volcano-tectonic unrest affecting wide area of Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland

Updated 29th of October at 2pm

The latest cGPS deformation data around the Þorbjörn and Svartengi area confirm that the deformation, which started 27 October, continues. As initially stated, the ongoing deformation rates are higher than in previous events which occurred in a similar area in 2020 and 2022. Overall, the seismicity north of Grindavík has been declining over the past 24 hours and there are no significant changes in earthquake depths. However, it is important to emphasise that the current deformation may trigger renewed seismicity in the area that could be felt by people.

New satellite data are expected to be delivered later today, and a new interferogram will be processed as soon as the data are available. The results will allow us to identify and interpret the deformation processes that have occurred on the peninsula over the past 12 days. We expected to publish the results tomorrow.

An episode of complex volcano-tectonic unrest is currently affecting the Reykjanes Peninsula. It is interpreted to result from multiple deformation sources at depth, which are interacting and affecting a wide area across the peninsula.

Earthquake of magnitude 6.3 hits Afghanistan, days after devastating quake - 4th in 8 days

MMMMM
A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck western Afghanistan on Sunday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said, more than a week after strong quakes and aftershocks killed thousands of people and flattened entire villages.

The US Geological Survey said the latest quake's epicenter was about 34 kilometers (21 miles) outside Herat, the provincial capital, and eight kilometers (five miles) below the surface. Also, a 5.5 magnitude aftershock has hit the area, said the USGS.

There were no immediate official reports of possible casualties or damage.

The earthquakes on October 7 flattened whole villages in Herat, in one of the most destructive quakes in the country's recent history.AP
