Shallow 6.0-magnitude earthquake hits near Indonesian island: USGS

A shallow 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit near the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Saturday, the United States Geological Survey said.

The tremor hit at 9:43 pm local time (1443 GMT) at a depth of 9.9 kilometres, according to the USGS.

Indonesia's geophysics agency (BMKG) reported no immediate tsunami but warned of possible aftershocks. It initially reported a magnitude of 6.3.

"I was having a good sleep (when the earthquake jolted). I jumped out of bed immediately," said Qamariah, a 41-year-old housewife in Central Sulawesi's Malei village.

Magnitude 6.6 earthquake near Kermadec Islands, no tsunami risk to New Zealand

Authorities say a now magnitude 6.6 earthquake near the Kermadec Islands does not pose a tsunami threat to New Zealand.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said: "Based on current information, the initial assessment is that the earthquake is unlikely to have caused a tsunami that will pose a threat to New Zealand."

NEMA said the quake happened about 9pm and was at a depth of 69km. It earlier said the quake was magnitude 7.0 at a depth of 33km.

It said the 6.6 magnitude was provisional and may be increased or decreased as more seismic data becomes available.

The US Geological Survey's Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre also said there is no tsunami threat from the earthquake.

A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake shakes northern Chile

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake shook northern Chile on Wednesday but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at 8:48 p.m. local time, and its epicenter was 41 kilometers (25 miles) south-southwest of Coquimbo, Chile. The quake had a depth of 41 kilometers (25 miles).

Chile's national emergency office did not report any damages or injuries.

Chile is located in the so-called "Ring of Fire" in the Pacific and experiences frequent earthquakes. In 2010, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake and subsequent tsunami claimed 526 lives.

Magnitude 6.1 earthquake strikes Russia's Kuril Islands region

An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck the Kuril Islands region in far eastern Russia to the northeast of Japan, on Saturday, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ).

The quake was at a depth of 142 km (88 miles), GFZ said.

Magnitude 7.1 earthquake strikes near Indonesia's Bali

A strong magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck near the Indonesian resort island of Bali on Monday.

Data from the US Geological Survey shows the earthquake hitting about 182 kilometers (113 miles) northeast of the island Gili Air.

No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake.

In November, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake in Indonesia's West Java province resulted in the tragic loss of over 300 lives and left thousands injured.

6.2 magnitude earthquake strikes northern Argentina

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck deep underground in northern Argentina on Wednesday, and there were no immediate reports of damages.

The quake occurred at a depth of 353 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter was in the province of Santiago del Estero, in northern Argentina, about 80 miles northeast of the provincial capital.

The earthquake took place a few minutes after a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck at a depth of 55 miles in northern neighboring Chile, 35 miles east of the town of La Tirana.

Neither Argentine nor Chilean authorities reported any damages.

Shallow 6.3 magnitude earthquake shakes Colombian capital, one dead

A strong earthquake of 6.3 magnitude struck the Colombian capital Bogota on Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, prompting frightened residents to flee into the street and leading a woman to fall to her death.

There were no immediate reports of major damage from the quake, which Colombia's national geological service reported as a magnitude 6.1.

"It was strong, and lasted a long time, said Adrian Alarcon, 43, who works near the capital's busy Park 93 district.
