The tremor, first measured at 6.6, hit 159km southwest of Raoul island, the US Geological Survey said.
New Zealand's Civil Defence has not yet commented on whether the quake would affect New Zealand.

"The magnitude 6.7 earthquake was registered off the east coast of Kamchatka. The epicentre of the earthquake was located at the depth of about 60 kilometres, 108 kilometres (67 miles) to the east of the locality of Ust-Kamchatsk", the GS RAS spokesperson said.
According to the data of the regional branch of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, the tremors were felt in Ust-Kamchatsk. The quake has not resulted in any casualties or damage to infrastructure.
According to the USGS, the epicenter was 11 miles from Puerto Armuelles, 12 miles from La Concepcion, 24 miles from David and 24 miles from Pedregal.
In the last 10 days, there have been no earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 6.2 miles.
The earthquake hit at a depth of about 208 kilometers (129 miles), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). That's considered an intermediate depth, meaning the quake was less likely to cause shaking on land than one closer to the Earth's surface.
Still, residents in the Australian city of Darwin, approximately 720 kilometers away (450 miles), said they could feel shaking due to the seismic activity.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck just several kilometres from the small community of Petrolia, located over 400 kilometres (250 miles) from the city of San Francisco.
A 5.6-magnitude tremor was registered in Humboldt County in northern California late Saturday, the US Geological Survey reported, adding that the estimated depth of the earthquake was 9.4 km (5.8 miles).
At the moment, there is no official information about damage or casualties in the region.

The powerful quake was picked up by observers in western Latin American countries monitoring for seismic activity, and by the US Geological Survey, which said the quake's epicentre hit what is believed to be a sparsely populated area.
According to reports the quake followed a series of tremors across the Pacific region on Tuesday, including a 6.8 magnitude quake shaking Japan's east coast, and a 6.8 quake striking south of New Zealand's Kermadec Islands chain.
The quake had a depth of 10 kilometers along Kermadec Islands. It struck the area at 3:02 p.m. (Philippine time).
Phivolcs reported there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from the quake.
A magnitude 6.7 quake also jolted the coast of Honshu, Japan on Tuesday evening. The said tremor prompted Japanese authorities to issue tsunami advisories in the prefectures of Yamagata and Niigata, as well as in Sadogashima Island. The tsunami warning was lifted hours later.
The earthquake left at least 26 people in the northwestern region injured, according to Japanese wire agency Kyodo News.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, but the country's Meteorological Agency issued a warning for a 0.2 - 1 metre tsunami along the northwest coast of the main island of Honshu.
The quake struck around 30 miles southwest of the city of Sakata at 10.22pm on Tuesday, the agency reported, with the coastal areas of Yamagata and Niigata prefectures and the Noto area in Ishikawa Prefecture receiving tsunami advisories.
It said the quake's epicentre was fairly shallow, about six miles below the sea's surface.
Shallow quakes tend to cause more damage on the Earth's surface, but the agency said the expected "fluctuation" of waves was unlikely to cause damage.

Comment: A 6.3 magnitude earthquake preceded the above event at the same location a day earlier.
