Earthquakes
"I literally felt a wave under the bed, and I sat straight up," one resident told CBS.
A group of UC Berkeley seismologists says that heavy rain and snow this winter has contributed to the earthquakes, which were centered in the Sierra mountains. They say the excessive mass of water and snow puts enough pressure on the mountains to make them move and flex as the water begins to run off and dry out, triggering the earthquakes. "These stress changes are just giving it that push over the edge, and makes these faults rupture earlier," said Christopher Johnson, a researcher at Berkeley's Seismology Lab.
The fourth, at a magnitude of 1.3, was recorded near Livermore around 1 a.m. Wednesday, according to the station. According to Michigan Technological University, earthquakes under 2.5 in magnitude are "usually not felt, but can be recorded by a seismograph," and about 900,000 such quakes are estimated to take place around the world every year.
Earlier this month, residents of Monroe took to social media to report feeling the ground shake in what was recorded as a 2.1-magnitude earthquake there.
The current earthquake swarm began on June 12. A week later, the USGS put out a statement to say that 464 earthquakes had been recorded, with the largest being magnitude 4.4 "This is the highest number of earthquakes at Yellowstone within a single week in the past five years," it said.
At the time, a spokesperson for the USGS told Newsweek appeared to be "slowly winding down," adding that "no other geological activity has been detected." However, in a newly released statement about the ongoing swarm, seismologists from the University of Utah said 878 events have now been recorded at Yellowstone National Park.
The largest earthquake measured a magnitude 3.9 shortly after 2 a.m. at a shallow depth.
The earthquake was reported 11 miles (17 kilometers) from Truckee.
Preliminary earthquake information shows that at least 28 minor aftershocks occurred in the area, ranging in magnitude from 0.6. to 3.2 following the 3.9 magnitude shaker.
No major damage or injuries were reported.

There were over 40 earthquakes at Kolbeinseyjahryggur north of Iceland yesterday.
"There are no sings of an eruption. The series of earthquakes seems to be connected to the tectonic plates," says Einar Hjörleifsson from Iceland Met Office. The earthquakes originate on the borders of the American and the Eurasian tectonic plates.
"Kolbeinseyjarhryggur [where the earthquakes originate] is located where two tectonic plates meet. Series of earthquakes aren't unusual, though they were many and some of them large all at the same time."

No tsunami threat has been reported.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in the southern part of Nagano Prefecture, and the seismic focus was about 10 km deep.
Subterranean tremors were felt by the inhabitants of 25 prefectures.
There has been no information about victims and destruction.
As of 11:30 Friday morning, 769 quakes had been recorded in the current swarm, said Jamie Farrell, a research professor of seismology at the University of Utah.
The swarm, which began June 12, is ongoing, he added, though the frequency of earthquakes has slowed down a bit. Typical swarms comprise 10 to 50 quakes, Farrell said.
"As of now, everything that we can see looks like these are tectonic in origin," he said. "There's no volcanic signature to any of these events that we've found."
The university's seismograph stations have tracked a single quake in the magnitude 4 range, a temblor near West Yellowstone on June 15 that has been the largest of the swarm to date.
The USGS put the depth of the tremor at 10 km (6. 21 miles).
The USGS says Mozambique lies on a huge East African continental rift that is associated with shallow earthquakes. The most recent major quake to strike the region took place in Mozambique in 2006. It measured magnitude 7.0 and killed two people.
A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 has struck Botswana, with shaking felt across southern Africa, including South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe on April 32017
