Big One Coming? Northern California shaken by more than a dozen earthquakes

earthquake graph image
Northern Californians were rather surprised - and perhaps a little unnerved - when more than a dozen earthquakes shook the Sierra region in a single morning. At least 16 earthquakes were registered near the town of Truckee in Northern California, about 200 miles northeast of San Francisco. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the first temblor hit the area at about 2:00 a.m., while the strongest shake had a magnitude of 3.9.

"I literally felt a wave under the bed, and I sat straight up," one resident told CBS.

A group of UC Berkeley seismologists says that heavy rain and snow this winter has contributed to the earthquakes, which were centered in the Sierra mountains. They say the excessive mass of water and snow puts enough pressure on the mountains to make them move and flex as the water begins to run off and dry out, triggering the earthquakes. "These stress changes are just giving it that push over the edge, and makes these faults rupture earlier," said Christopher Johnson, a researcher at Berkeley's Seismology Lab.

There have been four earthquakes in Maine so far this week

earthquakes Bangor ME
Geologists say there have been four earthquakes recorded in Maine so far this week, according to Portland ABC television affiliate WMTW. That brings this month's total to five, more than double the monthly average for Maine over the past year. All four this week have been very minor quakes, with three of the four — two at a 1.4 on the moment magnitude scale and one 1.7-magnitude near Lincoln — taking place Sunday, WMTW reported.

The fourth, at a magnitude of 1.3, was recorded near Livermore around 1 a.m. Wednesday, according to the station. According to Michigan Technological University, earthquakes under 2.5 in magnitude are "usually not felt, but can be recorded by a seismograph," and about 900,000 such quakes are estimated to take place around the world every year.

Earlier this month, residents of Monroe took to social media to report feeling the ground shake in what was recorded as a 2.1-magnitude earthquake there.

Yellowstone Supervolcano earthquake swarm reaches 878 events in just two weeks

Location of the earthquakes that are part of the swarm as of June 26.
Over 800 earthquakes have now been recorded at Yellowstone supervolcano over the last two weeks, with the ongoing swarm taking place on the western edge of the National Park. But there is virtually no risk of the volcano erupting, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) currently lists the volcano alert level as normal and the aviation color, which lists the potential risk to fights, is at green.

The current earthquake swarm began on June 12. A week later, the USGS put out a statement to say that 464 earthquakes had been recorded, with the largest being magnitude 4.4 "This is the highest number of earthquakes at Yellowstone within a single week in the past five years," it said.

At the time, a spokesperson for the USGS told Newsweek appeared to be "slowly winding down," adding that "no other geological activity has been detected." However, in a newly released statement about the ongoing swarm, seismologists from the University of Utah said 878 events have now been recorded at Yellowstone National Park.

Over 12 earthquakes recorded northwest of Donner Lake, California

The United States Geological Survey reports that more than two dozen earthquakes rattled the Lake Tahoe region early Tuesday.

The largest earthquake measured a magnitude 3.9 shortly after 2 a.m. at a shallow depth.

The earthquake was reported 11 miles (17 kilometers) from Truckee.

Preliminary earthquake information shows that at least 28 minor aftershocks occurred in the area, ranging in magnitude from 0.6. to 3.2 following the 3.9 magnitude shaker.

No major damage or injuries were reported.

Series of over 40 earthquakes registered north of Iceland

There were over 40 earthquakes at Kolbeinseyjahryggur north of Iceland yesterday.
There has been a series of earthquakes 230 km north of Iceland since last night. There have been over 40 small earthquakes and two have been measured over 4 on the Richter scale.

"There are no sings of an eruption. The series of earthquakes seems to be connected to the tectonic plates," says Einar Hjörleifsson from Iceland Met Office. The earthquakes originate on the borders of the American and the Eurasian tectonic plates.

"Kolbeinseyjarhryggur [where the earthquakes originate] is located where two tectonic plates meet. Series of earthquakes aren't unusual, though they were many and some of them large all at the same time."

Shallow 5.7 magnitude earthquake hits central Japan

5.7-magnitude earthquake rocks Japan's Nagano prefecture

5.7-magnitude earthquake rocks Japan's Nagano prefecture
An earthquake with magnitude of 5.7 hit the central part of Japan's island of Honshu, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported.

No tsunami threat has been reported.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the southern part of Nagano Prefecture, and the seismic focus was about 10 km deep.

Subterranean tremors were felt by the inhabitants of 25 prefectures.

There has been no information about victims and destruction.

770 earthquakes in Yellowstone Park in 2 weeks: 'More than normal' say scientists

Almost 770 earthquakes have been recorded in Yellowstone Park over the past two weeks — more than normal but not a sign of volcanic activity, scientists say.

As of 11:30 Friday morning, 769 quakes had been recorded in the current swarm, said Jamie Farrell, a research professor of seismology at the University of Utah.

The swarm, which began June 12, is ongoing, he added, though the frequency of earthquakes has slowed down a bit. Typical swarms comprise 10 to 50 quakes, Farrell said.

"As of now, everything that we can see looks like these are tectonic in origin," he said. "There's no volcanic signature to any of these events that we've found."

The university's seismograph stations have tracked a single quake in the magnitude 4 range, a temblor near West Yellowstone on June 15 that has been the largest of the swarm to date.

Shallow earthquake measuring 5.8 magnitude strikes Beira, Mozambique

CHART
An earthquake measuring 5 point 8 magnitude struck 60 kilometers (37 point 28 miles) northwest the Mozambique city of BEIRA, the United States Geological Survey said today.

The USGS put the depth of the tremor at 10 km (6. 21 miles).

The USGS says Mozambique lies on a huge East African continental rift that is associated with shallow earthquakes. The most recent major quake to strike the region took place in Mozambique in 2006. It measured magnitude 7.0 and killed two people.

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 has struck Botswana, with shaking felt across southern Africa, including South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe on April 32017
