Philippines: 20 volcanic quakes in Taal recorded in last 24 hours

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) maintained the Alert Level 2 hoisted over Taal Volcano, as 20 volcanic earthquakes were recorded during the past 24 hours.

Alert 2 status means present activities could eventually lead to an eruption, according to Phivolcs.

Phivolcs said there was a noticeable increase in seismic activity of the volcano. Water temperature at the Main Crater Lake also slightly increased from 29.8°C to 30.1°C.

Phivolcs advised the public to keep away from the Main Crater, Daang Kastila Trail and Mt. Tabaro because sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate.

Nevada, US: Swarm of Quakes have Experts Concerned

Nevada Seismologists are keeping a close eye on an area southwest of Hawthorne, Nevada where hundreds of earthquakes have been detected since Sunday.

" It's a little bit concerning in a sense.. The largest earthquakes in these sequences are pretty large in size." Graham Kent is Director of Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada Reno. He says there have been hundreds of earthquakes southwest of Hawthorne over the past few days. The largest-- recorded at a 4.4 in size.

"These are the biggest in a sequence we've seen at least in the last couple of years." Kent says unlike the 2008 quakes in Somersett that damaged so many homes, these earthquakes are fortunately not underneath a community.

Several aftershocks have been felt by residents in parts of north Queensland following a 5.2-magnitude earthquake.

The quake, one of the largest to hit the state in many years, was recorded 60 kilometres west of Bowen just after 3.30pm (AEST) Saturday.

The rumblings were felt in several towns throughout the region, but police say there are no reports of damage or injuries.

There have been several aftershocks, with one registering a magnitude 4.

Power has been fully restored to about 20,000 homes and business after a 5.2-magnitude aftershock rocked quake-devastated Christchurch.

New Zealand's second largest city remains devastated following a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in February which claimed 181 lives, and followed a stronger, but less destructive 7.1 quake last September.

The latest tremor hit at 5:49pm (local time) and was centred 16 kilometres west of the city at a depth of nine kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted Queensland, Australia at 05:31:19 GMT on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 10.00 km, was initially determined to be at 20.0339 degrees south latitude and 147.6587 degrees east longitude.

Australia's Barrier Reef district was rocked by an unusual 5.2-magnitude earthquake Saturday, but laid-back locals said they had barely felt a thing.

The tremor struck about 3.30pm local time (0530 GMT) about 124 kilometres southeast of Townsville at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the United States Geological Survey.

A low rumbling was felt at Magnetic Island, a 20-minute ferry ride from the mainland and part of the Great Barrier Reef, according to a hotelier at the All Seasons resort, where it briefly interrupted a wedding on the beach.

"Some of the guests felt a bit of a shake, nothing much. It wasn't major, no-one fell over and nothing was damaged," she said.

"It was just like a shudder, my office backs onto the laundry and I said 'Oh, that was a big spin cycle.' It hasn't stopped the world up here.

There was some early-morning shaking happening south of the Coachella Valley Friday. Four earthquakes hit just minutes apart from one another. The first one was a magnitude 3.2, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It happened at 4:47 a.m. Then, one minute later, three 3.0 magnitude shakers, all hit within seconds of each other at 4:48 a.m. There are no immediate reports of injuries or damages.

4:47:25 a.m. - a 3.2-magnitude earthquake hit 14 miles from Anza

4:48:42 a.m. - a 3.0-magnitude earthquake hit 15 miles from Borrego Springs

4:48:52 a.m. - another 3.0-magnitude earthquake hit 16 miles from Borrego Springs

4:48:56 a.m. - the final 3.0-magnitude earthquake hit 14 miles from Anza

Africa: Earthquake Magnitude 4.8 rattles rural Tanzania, felt in Kenya; earthquakes rare in Africa

The U.S. Geological Survey says a 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook rural Tanzania southwest of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Friday's earthquake could be felt as far away as Nairobi, Kenya, by people on high floors of downtown buildings. Nairobi is 220 miles (350 kilometers) northeast of the epicenter.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the epicenter was 90 miles (145 kilometers) southwest of Arusha, Tanzania.

Africa does not have any known major earthquake zones. The area southwest of Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the few regions on the continent with regular seismic activity.
