Oman records back-to-back earthquake tremors

Muscat: Two back-to-back earthquakes were recorded closer to Oman by the Earthquake Monitoring Centre at Sultan Qaboos University in the last 24 hours but there were no reports of damage to property or loss of life.

While an earthquake measuring 4.8-magnitude was reported in the Arabian Gulf around midnight, the other was reported from southern Iran with 4.2-magnitude on Tuesday evening.

Speaking to Times of Oman, Dr Issa Al Hussain, director, Earthquake Monitoring Centre, Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), said that they record around 150 earthquakes from all over the globe every month.

"Locally we record around four to five quakes every month but most of them are weak and its epicenter is far away from Oman,- he said. But given Oman's close vicinity to where the Arabian plates meet the Eurasian plates, how much risk does it pose to the Sultanate?

Increased seismic activity reported at Iceland's Katla Volcano

Increased seismic activity was detected in Mýrdalsjökull glacier in south Iceland, under which the volcano Katla lies, last night. Twenty-six minor earthquakes were picked up by sensors, all of which had their epicenter within the Katla crater.

A seismic activity expert on watch at the Icelandic Meteorological Office informed ruv.is that the earthquake swarm had started at 1 am and continued through 5 am.

However, there is no reason to be concerned about an imminent volcanic eruption or glacial outburst in Katla. The earthquakes were all shallow and originated in seismic activity in the geothermal system.

Aftershocks After Rare Melbourne Quake

Melbourne

Up to 60 aftershocks have been felt across Victoria and in Melbourne following last night's 5.3-magnitude earthquake.

The quake struck just before 9pm (11pm NZ time) with the epicentre between Traralgon and Moe in the state's southeast.

The shaking lasted around 30 seconds but could be felt from Gippsland to metropolitan Melbourne and as far as Swan Hill in the state's northwest.

Seismologist at Geoscience Australia, Marco Maldoni, said the aftershocks were minor but may continue to be felt for weeks.

"These are a lot smaller than the initial earthquake, the vast majority below a two or three (magnitude),'' he told AAP.

"Quite a number of them could only be felt within the noise of the signal.

"We're talking about magnitude 1, so very small.''

Mr Maldoni said the quake was the largest in Victoria since 1982 and the state's third largest in 100 years.

It hit about 9:00pm (AEST), with the epicentre near Moe in west Gippsland, about 120 kilometres south-east of Melbourne.

Geoscience Australia says the 5.3 quake had a depth of about 10km and rumbled through Melbourne and communities including Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong and Shepparton.

People have reported hearing a roaring noise, with reports of cracks occurring in the walls and floors of homes.

Victoria Police say they have received a number of calls in relation to the tremor.

They say they have not received any reports of major damage.

The Victorian State Emergency Service (SES) says they have received 40 requests for assistance in the broader Gippsland area and parts of Melbourne, but no reports of significant damage.

The SES's Lachlan Quick says most of the request of assistance have come from areas near the epicentre.

10 Aftershocks Followed 4.0 Earthquake in Orange County, Officials Say

Image
California - The 4.0-magnitute earthquake that rumbled beneath Orange County on Wednesday night resulted in about 10 aftershocks, the most recent occurring Thursday morning, officials said.

The latest temblor, which was too small to feel, happened about 7:30 a.m., about 11 hours after the 4.0-magnitude quake hit, said Bob Dollar, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey. Most of the aftershocks occurred within about an hour of the 4.0 quake, the largest being two 2.4-magnitude temblors that were about two miles north and north-northwest of Yorba Linda.

The first quake was felt over a wide area of Los Angeles and Orange counties, Dollar said, with more than 8,000 people reporting to the USGS's "Did you feel it?" page.

Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake Shakes Southeastern Turkey, Some Minor Damage, Injuries Reported

Ankara, Turkey - A moderate earthquake shook southeastern Turkey on Thursday, damaging a mosque's minarets and injuring a handful of people who jumped off buildings in panic, authorities said.

The Kandilli Observatory seismology center said a magnitude 5.5 quake struck at a depth of 5.4 kilometers (3.3 miles) on Thursday morning at 8:52 p.m. ( 0552GMT)

The epicenter of the quake was in the village of Pinaronu in Sirnak province, close to the borders of Syria and Iraq.
