Strong shallow magnitude 6.3 earthquake off Vanuatu

maps
Magnitude 6.1 earthquake strikes near Santo, Luganville, Sanma Province, Vanuatu

According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 6.1 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 6.3, and France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.7.

Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.

Azores earthquake: Locals flee Portuguese island after thousands of earthquakes raise fears
The Sao Jorge volcano in the Azores Island chain is in danger of both erupting and producing a large earthquake. As a result, its alert level has been placed at orange due to the detection of a body of magma intruding underneath the island. This intrusion of magma occurred alongside an earthquake swarm where more than 14,000 quakes were detected. The largest of these struck on March 29th, registering in as a magnitude 4.0. This video will discuss the ongoing situation, and mention where an eruption could occur.

This week in Volcano News - Potential eruption in Azores, Mauna Kea earthquake

Azores island prepares to evacuate amid major earthquake fears
Azores island prepares to evacuate amid major earthquake fears
Right now, there are 51 volcanoes actively erupting on the planet. This week's top story regards the Sao Jorge volcano in Portugal, where a shallow intrusion of magma is ongoing. Its alert level was raised three times in a week, and ground deformation and elevated gas levels have been detected. Thus, an eruption might occur in the next few days.

Meanwhile in Chile, the alert level at the Lonquimay volcano was raised to yellow due to a swarm of earthquakes underneath its edifice. And, in Hawaii, a large earthquake occurred underneath the flank of Mauna Kea. This video will discuss these volcano related news stories, as told and analyzed by a volcanologist.
