Magnitude 6.7 Quake Rattles Northern Japan

Tokyo - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 struck off the Pacific coast of northern Japan early Thursday, Japanese and U.S. seismologists reported.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that a tsunami about one-half meter (19.5 inches) could be generated by the temblor, but there was no immediate report of damage or injuries.

The quake struck shortly before 7 a.m. (6 p.m. Wednesday ET) and was centered 530 kilometers (330 miles) north-northeast of Tokyo. The epicenter was off the northern prefecture of Iwate, about 175 kilometers (109 miles) north of where the magnitude 9 quake that devastated northern Japan struck in March.

New Zealand: Late night quake scares Christchurch residents

Last night another wave of violent tremors shook Christchurch residents again, and disrupted exams for some university students.

The most violent earthquake - 5.4 - hit just after 10:30pm, scaring the wits out of exhausted Christchurch residents.

"For us it wasn't a rolling, it was very sharp upheaval and really threw everything up and dropped it on the ground," says Peter Claridge.

Mr Claridge lives directly above the epicentre where the quake hit

"It emptied everything out, including the nails," he says.

Antarctic Region Hit By Series Of Moderate Earthquakes

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck the South Sandwich Islands region, situated around 750km south east of South Georgia, in the South Atlantic early Sunday. It was the latest in a series of quakes to hit the Antarctic Region during the past 24 hours.

The moderate quake struck at 9.37am GMT at a depth of 137km and was centred 69 km (42 miles) NNW of Visokoi Island and 330 km (205 miles) NNW of Bristol Island.

The last significant earthquake to be recorded in the South Sandwich Islands region occurred on 08 December 2010 when a magnitude 6.5 quake struck 85 km (55 miles) ENE of Visokoi Island.

The unpopulated islands consist of a chain of eleven volcanic islands, connected by a low submarine ridge, bending in an arc around 400km long. They are an overseas dependency of the UK, but also claimed by Argentina. The 337km islands lie 750 km (470 miles) south east of South Georgia in the South Atlantic Ocean.

This morning's earthquake was followed by a 4.9 magnitude quake along the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge at 12.05pm. The quake was measured at a depth of 10.3 km (6.4 miles).

Strong Quakes again rock shaken New Zealand city

A series of aftershocks rattled New Zealand's quake-devastated city of Christchurch again Monday, toppling one of the few buildings still standing downtown and sinking thousands of homes into darkness.

Bricks came crashing down in the cordoned-off city center, where only workers have tread since it was devastated in February's major earthquake. About 200 people were there when the quakes struck Monday, and two were briefly trapped in a church. In all, 10 people were injured in the city.

"We are being enveloped with dust," Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker told New Zealand's National Radio. "It is very, very scary."

All across the city, people fled buildings in panic when a 5.2-magnitude quake struck during lunchtime; just over an hour later, a 6.0 hit, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Other smaller quakes were also recorded.

In the central city and nearby suburbs, several buildings were damaged.
