Earthquakes
There was no tsunami warning accompanying the quake which struck inland 158 kilometres (98 miles) from the provincial capital Jayapura at a shallow depth of almost 34 kilometers, USGS said.
The Southeast Asian archipelago is one of the most disaster-prone nations on Earth.
In 2018, a 7.5-magnitude quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island left more than 4,300 people dead or missing.
The center of the 5.9 earthquake is located about 8 miles south of Guanica, Puerto Rico, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
There is no threat for a tsunami at this time.
A 6.3-magnitude earthquake has occurred in Russia's Chukotka region, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported. The quake occurred at 8:38 UTC, 416 kilometres southwest of Chukotka's administrative centre Anadyr and 2,891 kilometres from Sapporo, Japan.
Comment: Just a coincidence, nothing to worry about!
Or was it?
An earthquake has struck near the Bushehr nuclear power plant on a crucial day for Iran which has seen tensions in the Middle East erupt.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake struck 10km southeast of Borazjan in Iran with a magnitude of 4.9. The quake also struck at a depth of 10km. Borazjan is a almost a 70km drive away from Bushehr.

Comment: It's weird how this happened right after Trump assassinated Iran's number 2...

Cars were crushed under a home in Guanica that collapsed after Monday's earthquake.
There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.
It was the largest of a flurry of temblors that first began the night of Dec. 28, with quakes ranging in magnitude from 4.7 to 5.1. The lesser quakes had already left some homes damaged.
After the 5.8-magnitude quake hit the region, a string of smaller temblors, including a magnitude 5 quake, shook power lines and frightened residents into the streets.
Pictures of the damage showed cars crushed under a collapsed house, caved-in roofs and other homes standing lopsided after partially collapsing.
Comment: Shallow 4.5-magnitude earthquake hits Puerto Rico amid rare seismic activity
UPDATE 7 Jan 2020
Another strong quake has hit Puerto Rico, this one a 6.5M.

Indonesian students take cover during an earthquake and tsunami drill at a school in Banda Aceh November 14, 2019.
The epicentre was located at a depth of 20 km, 16 km SSW of Sinabang, Indonesia.
There have been no immediate reports about damage or casualties due to the earthquake.
The epicentre was located at a depth of 10 km, 38 km southeast of Union Hidalgo in the southern state of Oaxaca on the nation's Pacific coast, Mexico's Seismology Service reported in its Twitter account.
"We haven't stopped shaking," said Ángel Vázquez, emergency management director for the southern coastal town of Ponce. "It's the first time something like this happens."
The flurry of quakes began the night of December 28, with a 4.7-magnitude quake followed by a 5.1-magnitude one that hit near Puerto Rico's south coast and sent dozens of panicked people into the streets. Goods fell off supermarket shelves, cracks in homes were reported in some coastal towns, and a large rock fell and blocked a road. No injuries were reported.
Since then, more than 1,100 earthquakes have occurred in that region. The majority have not been felt, except for the 4.2-magnitude one that hit December 31 and the one on Thursday.
"I've spent 29 years with Puerto Rico's Seismic Network, and it's the first time I observe this kind of activity," director Víctor Huérfano told The Associated Press. "There's no way to predict when it's going to end, or if it's going to lead to a major event."
A powerful 5.8-magnitude earthquake has hit the town of Sangan, according to Iranian state television. The epicentre of the quake was located at a depth of 8 kilometres (5 miles). At the moment, there are no official reports about casualties or damage, caused by the tremor.
Sangan is a city with a population of around 9,000, located near the Afghan border.
Comment: Hmmm. This could have been the result of some hi-tech response by the 'deep state/Usual Suspects' to Iran's ballsy response to the American assassination of Soleimani... or it could have been the cosmos itself chiming in on the portentous events afoot in that region.
