7.1-magnitude quake strikes off Indonesian island, tsunami warning issued

Jakarta -- A powerful earthquake struck off the Indonesian island of Java on early Monday morning, seismologists said, prompting a tsunami warning for some local regions.

The 7.1-magnitude earthquake at 3.06 a.m. local time (2006 GMT Sunday) was centered about 279 kilometers (173 miles) south-southwest of Tasikmalaya on Java. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to Indonesia's seismological agency.

Authorities in Indonesia immediately issued a tsunami warning for some coastal areas, while the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a Pacific-wide tsunami.

Srinagar - A moderate intensity earthquake, sixth within a span of 11 days, was felt in Kashmir Valley on Saturday morning.

The Coordinator of Disaster Management Cell Kashmir, Aamir Ali said that an earthquake of magnitude 4.7 on Richter scale occurred at 0924 hours.

The jolt was epicentred in Xinjiang border in Ladakh-China at 36.5 degree north latitude and 70.9 degree east longitude, Aamir said in a statement.

The tremor follows one on previous night at 1900 hours when an earthquake of magnitude 4.9 was felt with epicentre at Hindukush Afghanistan at 36.54 N, 70.91E, the he said, adding that no damage was reported from any part of the Valley.

A strong earthquake struck the southern Greek island of Crete on Friday, rattling buildings as far away as Cairo, Egypt, across the Mediterranean. Local police said they had no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The Athens Geological Institute and the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, Germany, gave preliminary magnitudes of 6.2, while the U.S. Geological Survey gave the preliminary magnitude as 5.9. Preliminary magnitudes recorded by geological institutes often differ.

The quake struck off the southern coast of Crete at 4:29 p.m. (1329 GMT, 8:29 EDT), 122 kilometres (75 miles) east of the city of Irakleion, at a depth of 77 kilometres (48 miles), the USGS said.

Greece is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries, but serious damage and fatalities are rare.

Japan Hit by 6.5 Quake, Prompting Tsunami Warning

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Japan on Monday morning, prompting a tsunami warning, according to reports from the region. The quake hit near Miyagi prefecture, which suffered extensive damage in the catastrophic March 11 temblor, at 7:24 a.m. (6:24 p.m. U.S. Eastern time), according to Kyodo News.

Dow Jones Newswires said the quake was centered off the coast.

No injuries or damage were immediately reported.

A tsunami warning was issued shortly after the quake, however the resulting wave was expected to be relatively small in size, according to CNBC.

Burma earthquake: More than 60 killed

More than 60 people have died in a magnitude-6.8 earthquake in Burma which struck near the Lao and Thai borders.

It happened at 1355 GMT on Thursday and was centred about 70 miles (110 km) from the northern Thai city of Chiang Rai, the US Geological Survey said.

It was felt 800km to the south in the Thai capital Bangkok, and in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi.

The quake was shallow, at a depth of 6.2 miles (10km). There are fears the casualties could be much higher.
