5.4 magnitude earthquake rattles Costa Rica

Image
© The Extinction Protocol / USGS
5.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Costa Rica. The depth of the earthquake was 39.6 km (24.6 miles). The epicenter of the earthquake was 83 km (51 miles) WSW of SAN JOSE, Costa Rica and 162 km (100 miles) S of San Carlos, Nicaragua.

The earthquake was tectonic in nature and represents yet another stress release on the Cocos tectonic plate which experienced a 6.3 earthquake at Revilla Gigedo Islands west of Mexico on November 1. Costa Rica is a tri-junction tension point lodged between the Cocos, Caribbean and Nazca tectonic plate.

Increased seismic turbulence seen at the southern pole - 4 days, 4 earthquakes

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge region today at the shallow depth of 1.1 km. The earthquake is the fourth earthquake to rattle the southern region of the globe in four consecutive days. On November 1, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Western Indian-Antarctica Ridge. On October 31, a 5.1 struck the tectonic plate conjunction of the Southeast East Pacific Rise and on October 30, the Southeast Indian Ridge was hit by a 4.5 magnitude earthquake.

Tectonic plate agitation has diffused across the planet over the last 45 days and we're seeing more unrest in places which typically don't have earthquakes like the 6.3 magnitude earthquake which struck Revilla Gigedo Island region west of Mexico on November 1. Whether this latest series of earthquakes shaking the southernmost hemisphere signals a major shift in planetary seismic stress or a further erosion of planetary magnetism remains to be seen. We will be watching developments very closely over the next few days.

2 earthquakes hit China in southwest and northwest, no injuries reported

Two moderate earthquakes have shaken China's northwest and southwest regions.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-6.0 earthquake hit China's Xinjiang region about 60 miles (100 kilometres) from the city of Yining at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday, while the other quake struck the region bordering Sichuan and Gansu provinces at 6 a.m. at a magnitude of 5.5.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The earthquake in Xinjiang occurred at a depth of 17 miles (27 kilometres), while the other temblor was 10 miles (16 kilometres) deep.

China's worst quake in recent years was a 7.9-magnitude quake in Sichuan province in May 2008. It left nearly 90,000 people dead.

US: Geologists closely monitoring surge in central Arkansas quakes

arkansas map
Official: Layout of quakes might suggest larger tremor coming

The Arkansas Geological Survey says it is stepping up its monitoring of seismic activity in central Arkansas after dozens of small earthquakes in the region.

Six minor quakes were recorded Friday near Quitman, the latest of more than 50 temblors in October. The Friday tremors began with a 2.0-magnitude quake around 7:45 a.m. and peaked with a 2.5 quake later in the morning.

The shaking follows more than 1,000 earthquakes centered between Guy and Greenbrier from September 2010 to July of this year, when the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission ordered four gas disposal wells shut down and voted to create a large moratorium area in which no future disposal wells could be drilled.

Geologists said the activity - which involves injecting pressurized liquid into the ground - was likely contributing to the shaking.

Powerful earthquake hits off northeastern Taiwan; no reports of casualties or damage

A powerful earthquake has struck off northeastern Taiwan, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau says the quake registered magnitude 6.5, while the U.S. Geological Survey puts it at 5.5.

The earthquake struck Sunday morning at sea, about 88 miles (141 kilometers) east of the Taiwanese county of Keelung. Keelung is about 17 miles (28 kilometers) east of the capital, Taipei.

Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan, but most are minor and cause little or no damage.

However, a magnitude-7.6 earthquake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than 2,300 people.

Magnitude-6.9 Earthquake Rattles Peru Coast

Image
© UnknownMap indicating Peru's location on a map of S. America.
Lima - A magnitude-6.9 earthquake centered off Peru's central coast sent people running panicked into the streets Friday in cities badly damaged by a killer quake four years earlier. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

People who had lost loved ones and homes in the earlier quake were badly shaken and some broke into tears.

"It felt like the one in 2007 because it was very strong," Felix Sihuas told RPP radio. He said he was buried under rubble for six hours in the Aug. 15, 2007, quake, which killed 596 people and largely destroyed the town of Pisco.

Friday's quake was considerably less violent in Lima, a city of 8.5 million people some 180 miles (290 kilometers). The capital shook for about 30 seconds in a series of moderate, swaying movements.

The U.S. Geological Survey said Friday's quake was centered 31 miles (51 kilometers) south-southwest of Ica, a provincial capital of about 200,00 people which suffered widespread damage in the 2007 quake. It was at a depth of 21.7 miles (35 kilometers).

US, California: Magnitude 4.7 Earthquake Shakes Sacramento

Image
According to the United States Geological Survey, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake shook Sacramento late Wednesday night around 11:37 p.m. Did you feel it?

We sure did.

The quake could be felt as far away as Reno, Nevada, according to the USGS website.

The earthquake's epicenter is believed to have originated in Portola, California about 150 miles north east of Sacramento, though, according to the USGS, the official location has yet to be determined.

Fair Oaks Patch Facebook fans were quick to respond to our status update.

"It woke me up," said Fair Oaks native and Ground Zero Board Shop owner Brendan Mohr. "Never felt one before that and lived here for 28 years."

"Yep felt it," said Fair Oaks Patch Facebook fan, Danielle Parker.

Information is still coming in. As more is gathered we'll be sure to update this story.
