November 11, 2002 - Killer storms menace U.S. - Severe storms and dozens of tornadoes marched east across the United States on Sunday and early Monday, killing at least 35 people in five states and leaving a trail of flattened homes and businesses. A National Weather Service meteorologist said it was the worst outbreak of tornadoes in years. - At latest count, 17 people have been killed in Tennessee, 11 in Alabama, five in Ohio, one in Pennsylvania and one in Mississippi during storms that began this weekend. About 150 people were unaccounted for in Tennessee after a storm slammed into the remote town of Mossy Grove. The storms destroyed a movie theater filled with people in Ohio, blocked a state highway in Alabama with debris and left Tennessee's Mossy Grove in ruins. - "It's just been wiped off the face of the Earth," said Cecil Whaley, a Tennessee emergency management official, of Mossy Grove. Schools, homes and churches have been destroyed, he said.
Comment: We might as well get ourselves prepared for more of this sort of thing. The likelihood is that Nature will "mirror" the activities of George Bush and the Warmongers. As they "heat things up" in the socio-political arena, the people of the U.S. who have handed their Free Will over to this Cabal will be the ones to suffer the "natural repercussions." I have given thought, in the past few days, to the continuation of this page in any context. It's clear that the window of opportunity for our National probable future to jump to another stream has closed. At least for the moment. Who knows how much suffering is going to be inflicted upon the masses of people before they decide that the temporary bliss of ignorance is a "buy now, pay later" contract with serious implications in the fine print?
But, I decided that even if - at this point - there is no further reason to expend my energy on the soapbox - I will still post those interesting items that the readers send in to me. We will continue to keep our eye on the environment - both political, social and geologic/atmospheric. But with our voice being gradually suppressed, with threats and other pressures, don't be surprised if you log on one day and Cassiopaea is gone.
Interesting post on one of the internet newsgroups this morning: sci.physics: Datashaping.com has been manually removed from Google's databases. Datashaping is a web site catering to statisticians: job listings, theorems, etc. This dangerous (or adult?) material needs to be censored. At least this is Google's viewpoint. They didn't reply to my e-mail regarding this issue. Surprisingly they didn't cancel my paid advertising on their search engine, only the free listing. I will not pursue this issue and thus Datashaping won't be accessible from Google anymore. We do thank all of you who have complained to google about our own rapidly disappearing website links. It seems that they have realized that their actions have been noticed, and a couple of our pages are now back - though it is clear that they are a couple months old - and that it is only as a result of the many complaints... We have noticed a VERY disturbing trend lately, however. It seems that the internet is not only being "scrubbed" somewhat faster than we thought likely, but that very popular websites have been coopted in a major way - probably as the price of not being "scrubbed." We won't name any names, but you can be sure that, in the coming days, the controls on information - the lockdown on Truth - will be more and more severe - with penalties and/or sanctions against those who do not "get with the program" of the New World Order of Bush and the Warmongers.

And after eight weeks of debate in the Security Council, no one mentioned the crimes against humanity of 11 September 2001, because – of course – Iraq had absolutely nothing to do with 11 September. If the United States invades Iraq, we should remember that.
And what do we get from Mr Bush? Absolutely no gesture towards the Arab world. The joy of the Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, can be imagined. "Should we have to use troops," Mr Bush tells us, "the US, with friends, will move swiftly – with force – to do the job." In other words, he will invade Iraq, the "friends", presumably, being British. The United Nations can debate any Iraqi non-compliance with weapons inspectors, but the United States will decide whether Iraq has breached UN resolutions. In other words, America can declare war without UN permission.

Comment: Maybe I'm getting over sensitive to every announcement that comes out of the controlled media, scientific community, or political arena, but this really smells like a stinky red herring to me. Q: (T) There have been a lot of reports of late regarding major solar activity, solar flares, solar winds, etc. The surface of the sun has a whole lot going on. The last I heard, one of the two satellites observing the sun, one of them is gone. Is this an effect from the sun itself, or is this an effect of the approaching brown dwarf?
A: The sun.
Q: (T) As the brown dwarf approaches, will it intensify the solar flare activity?
A: The effect on the physical orientation of the sun from the periodic passage of its companion is to flatten the sphere slightly. This returns to its original spherical shape with the retreat.
Q: (T) So there is not going to be any appreciable effect on the planet from this as far as the sun goes?
A: The sun's gravity increases, thus inhibiting flares.

A: Your Bible says that there will be many wonders on the Earth and in the Heavens in the last days.

it happens, all of these events actually "fit" into both the
prophecies referenced above [See: Daniel 10-12] as well as the
scientific calculations. Ark has been in touch with all the
astronomical experts on Companion Stars, and after some exchanges
and data mining, he did some mathematical modeling. The time period
for the "Greatest Show on Earth" seems to be 2009. That just
happens to be about 6 years from 2003 - wherein we now see the
announcement being made that Mars is going to be closer to Earth
than it has been since 70 some thousand years ago. Interestingly,
that is also in the time period ballpark of the figure the C's gave
for the destruction of the planet that was formerly in the orbit
now occupied by the asteroid belt. It was also the time of the
arrival to Earth of the "Nordic" type of human.

Q: (L) Now according to these guys who are writing this web page about pole shift, they say it can be predicted where the poles will shift to. Is this in fact the case?
A: No. Chaotic function here
Q: (A) There are three possible things that would come under the name pole shift. Only one of them may come, or two, or three, okay? And these are the following - 1) the axis of rotation with respect to stars is changing, straightening out for instance; this is one thing; while all the rest goes with the axis, the lithosphere and the magnetic field. 2) the axis stays where it is, maybe it shifts a little bit; the lithosphere stays where it is - maybe it wobbles - but the magnetic field changes: for instance reverses. 3) axis stays, magnetic field stays, but the lithosphere is moving. So that's three ways a pole shift can happen. And of course there are things that come together. The most dramatic one which is seen from outside is when the axis of rotation changes. The next dramatic one is probably when the lithosphere changes. And the third of unknown consequences is when the magnetic pole changes, okay? So, we want to have an understanding what will be the main change. (L) Well I guess we ought to ask an even more basic question: are we looking at a pole shift happening during the next ten or so years with a high degree of probability?

Q: (A) In this concept of pole shift, what would be the main feature of this pole shift, of all those which we were discussing?
A: New axial orientation, and magnetic reversal.
Q: (L) That's fairly dramatic. (A) Alright, now, change of axis or orientation of axis of rotation: can we say we would straighten up, getting almost perpendicular to the ecliptic? Or the other possibility is that it will fall down being almost parallel to the ecliptic. The third is that we'll flip completely by 180 degrees. We know it's highly unpredictable, but can we have a clue from which one is, so to say, dominate?
A: Perpendicularity will be restored. ..Lithospheric shift will feature to some extent.
Q: (A) But, that means eventually that the equator will almost not change because...
A: Correct.
Q: (A) So it will just shift a little bit, but its not going to go to Hawaii? What about changes in the lithosphere: can we predict a little bit of change in geography, coming from motions in lithosphere and changes in water level?

Q: (A) Now, the change of the orientation of the axis, what would be the main trigger, force, or activity, or what kind of event will trigger this change of the axis?

The Google problem again: Those of you who have read our recent article COINTELPRO and the Speed of Light, will be aware of who John Baez is. As we described him in the earlier piece about the Bogdanov Affaire, he is one of the most active physicists on the internet. In the Speed of Light article, I pointed out that John Baez's commentary on the Bogdanov Affaire was "googled" and at the top of the search for the terms "bogdanov affair" or "bogdanovs" etc. This was on November 5.
Well, we pointed this out to several people, along with the fact that cassiopaea seems to be gradually disappearing from google, and a number of them took certain actions to "test" the idea. The Bogdanov pages were moved to other sites and submitted to google. Again, they have not appeared.
Now, this isn't because google takes its time, I don't think, because we notice that John Baez has again updated his pages about the Bogdanovs and again he has been "googled" with the update of November 7.
Those of you who haven't yet had a look at it, check out Ark's updated discussion with the Bogdanovs wherein he begins a different approach, and you will see one of the possible reasons the Bogdanovs have been targeted by what is NOW OBVIOUSLY COINTELPRO.
As I quoted from the book The CIA and the Cult of Intelligence by former high level CIA official, Victor Marchetti:

I have no suggestions to the reader as to what to do about this. We already know that the juggernaut of the Bush Reich is in motion, stalking the globe. The day is coming soon, I can assure you, when the Cassiopaea website will disappear entirely. And perhaps its owners will disappear as well.

While the Democrats are now limping nationally, in Florida they are entirely crippled. Voting on Tuesday left the party without a single government officer in Tallahassee, the state capital, and with so few members in the state legislature that they have been rendered virtually irrelevant. "We're staring into the abyss," conceded Dan Gelber, a Democrat state representative from Miami.
Comment: There is something about this whole thing that is logically inconsistent. We are told that voter turn-out was rather high... about 39 percent, I believe. Now generally, voters do not turn out if they are fairly satisfied with the way the country is being run. And of course, we realize that the Bush gang is telling us that this was a big "vote of confidence" FOR the current administration. But is it that simple? Bush's campaigning focused on war, polls say that people do not want war, they want economic solutions. We are then told that the exit polls were "flawed" and other polling organizations are in an uproar at present because their "opinion polls" do not seem to match the actual election results. What is wrong with this picture??? It STINKS of a rigged election. My guess is that yes, there was a much higher turn-out of voters, and the reason they were coming out to vote was because they were incensed and wanted to vote AGAINST Bush and the Republicans. And maybe the Bush Reich knew this? Maybe they had the CIA rig the computers??? Not too difficult a job for the alphabet soup guys, you must admit. After all, an administration that would fly 757's into an occupied office complex, and who would plan an attack on a basically unoccupied part of their own command center to cover their guilt, would do anything... But, of course, denial is pretty powerful, especially when it is induced by the hypnosis of the mass media and the "official culture."
A triumph for Mr Bush, but we may all bear the cost of the Democrats' failure - "Don't misunderestimate me," George W. Bush once famously (perhaps apocryphally) warned when he was running for president. It was a typical Bushism. We know what he meant, though, and the results of the mid-term elections in the United States mean that few would dare to misunderestimate the president's political skills now. He has confounded the pundits' confident predictions of tight results and recounts lasting for weeks, if not months. It was an unexpected triumph for Mr Bush. Comment: So unexpected that we just MUST ask some hard questions here. It may have nothing at all to do with "political skills" and everything to do with conspiracy to take over the world. But, of course, everybody is in denial about it - the people in Germany were in denial about Hitler, too - until it was too late. They woke up, alright... rather painfully.

Office of Homeland Security - Bush's Plan for a Dictatorship - The proposed Department of Homeland Security: If approved, it will amount to the most significant reorganization of the government since the Department of Defense was created and put under the control of a single secretary of defense in 1949 during the Truman administration. The proposal calls for all or parts of 22 government agencies to be pulled together under a single department committed to protecting the nation from terrorist attacks. As outlined by President Bush, the department would have 170,000 employees and a budget of $37.4 billion. There is some debate over how the new department is to be organized, with disagreement over how much latitude the president ought to have in hiring, firing and transferring employees. Bush wants broad discretion in how to run the department.
Polls show decline in support for Bush as fears mount in America - Sixty-four per cent said they believed the Bush administration had failed to explain its position in regard to Iraq and why military action was required.
Homeland stalemated in Senate - legislation creating the Homeland Security Department remains mired in a Senate stalemate over labor rights. - Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, chief sponsor of the Democratic homeland security bill. - Bush's unwavering insistence on broad powers over thousands of government employees is to blame for the stalemate. - "They say, 'It's either our way or no way,"' said Sen. Byron Dorgan, a North Dakota Democrat. "It's nonsense. There's no reason we can't have a compromise." - The central issue remains Bush's demands for greater authority to hire, fire and deploy the new agency's estimated 170,000 employees and to exempt them from union bargaining agreements for reasons of national security. - Democrats, who control the Senate, say Bush's proposals would effectively wreck many civil service protections in the new agency and amount to an assault on union bargaining rights. Bush has threatened to veto a Democratic bill that doesn't include the powers.
Liberty Wins -- So Far - It's true that the Bush administration, like its predecessors in wartime, has pressed for sweeping increases in executive authority, based on the novel argument that the president has the unilateral power to detain and investigate American citizens and alien residents without oversight from Congress or the courts. But the more surprising development is that the courts and Congress, unlike their predecessors in wartime, are rejecting the president's most extreme claims. - In a series of court cases, federal judges have insisted on the importance of judicial oversight of the president's powers of detention and deportation. And in the debates over the USA Patriot Act and the homeland security bill, libertarians on the right have joined with civil libertarians on the left in persuading Congress to repudiate the Bush administration's more draconian proposals for expanded surveillance authority. In this sense, the greatest protector of American liberty during the past year turned out to be something so basic that we often take it for granted: the checks and balances provided by the separation of powers in the Constitution.
Comment: Dear Readers, there is actually very little point in continuing this daily labor of trying to set off the alarm clock. I know that everybody who reads these pages has a clue about what is happening, and probably a lot more people as well. But either the election was rigged, or the American people actually voted the way they did and have given over their will to Dubya.
There exists in our world today a powerful and dangerous secret cult.
Victor Marchetti, a former high-ranking CIA official tells us that its holy men are the clandestine professionals of the Central Intelligence Agency. In our opinion, the CIA is but one "arm" of the cult, just as Benedictines were but one order of the Catholic Church. To borrow from, and paraphrasing, Marchetti:

It is true that the CIA is ONE of the primary instruments of the Cult; but it is not the only one. Yet, it is necessary to know something about the CIA in order to understand the objectives of the Cult. Marchetti tells us:
It engages in espionage and counterespionage, in propaganda and disinformation (the deliberate circulation of false information), in psychological warfare and paramilitary activities. It penetrates and manipulates private institutions, and creates its own organizations (called "proprieteries") when necessary. It recruits agents and mercenaries; it bribes and blackmails foreign officials to carry out its most unsavory tasks. It does whatever is required to achieve its goals, without any consideration of the ethics involved or the moral consequences of its actions.
The operations of the CIA … are hidden… to prevent the public and even Congress from knowing what the mysterious agency is doing - or why.
The Cult justifies this with the dramatic assertions that the CIA's purpose is to preserve the "national security," that its actions are in response to the "needs of the nation's defense." No one - in an age in which secrecy is the definitional operative of security - need know more than that.
The cult is intent upon conducting the affairs of world government without the awareness of participation of the people. It recognizes no role for a questioning legislature or an investigative press. Its adherents believe that only they have the right and the obligation to decide what is necessary to satisfy the national - and even global - needs. The Cult demands that it not be held accountable for its actions by the people it professes to serve. It is a privileged, as well as secret, charge. In their minds, those who belong to the Cult have been ordained, and their service is immune from public scrutiny.
The "clandestine mentality" is a mind-set that thrives on secrecy and deception. It encourages professional amorality - the belief that righteous goals can be achieved through the use of unprincipled and normally unacceptable means. The Cult's leaders must tenaciously guard their official actions from public view. To do otherwise would restrict their ability to act independently; it would permit the American people to pass judment on not only the utility of their policies, but the ethics of those policies as well.
For adherents of the Cult, hypocrisy and deception, like secrecy, have become standard techniques for preventing public awareness of their clandestine operations and governmental accountability for them. And these individuals who ask that they be regarded as honorable, will, when caught in their own web of lies, even assert that they have a right to lie to the people "for their own good.
In all times and in all places, there are the masses, and there are the elite controllers of the masses. This is true in tribal cultures and it is true in modern society. In primitive tribes, it is the shaman, the witch doctor, the "medicine man," and the elders who, in an unholy alliance with the chief or the king, determine the "official culture." The "official culture" is the control system of taboos, beliefs, traditions, customs, and all of those things that constitute the covenant between the rulers and the ruled. It is by means of the covenant that the perceived safety of collective identity is formed.
A covenant consists in a ruling elite demanding that the people they will agree to protect by virtue of some superior ability that they claim to possess, must obey the laws they institute. And, first and foremost among these laws is generally the demand that the people pledge allegiance to the constituted government and its titulary head, and never question the rulings of the elite, lest they be abandoned to the fate of chaos and predation. In other words, in any covenant, whether clearly stated or not, there are provisions and conditions, the primary one being: "Believe in me and obey me or else I will destroy you."
Keep in mind that this "covenant" is subliminal. Psychologically speaking, the state - the ruling elite - take the role of a parent to the people. In parent child relationships, the child very soon comes to the realization that he is small and weak and helpless in the big cold world. The child quickly learns that behaving in certain ways results either in approval or rejection. "If you do what is right, you will be accepted." And rejection carries with it the terror of exclusion - abandonment to the cold, terrifying world.
The use of religion in this Control System is significant. Monotheism is the ultimate "obey me or I will destroy you" covenant, and it has been cleverly utilized by the elite for millennia to control the masses. Backed by the unassailable authority of the word of God, the rule of kings and priests has been the source of authorization of our ethics, codes of conduct, and to sanction all manner of ideas that the elite see as being useful to maintaining and strengthening their dominance.
Concentrating power in a single individual, or a small group, is an effective way to "fix identity" and to elicit loyalty. Historically, a covenant was made between a stronger, dominant individual or group, and a weaker, lesser individual or group that was indebted to the stronger for favors of various sorts - generally allowing the weaker individuals to live in peace. Covenants literally gave the elite the option of allowing the masses to live if they agreed to be subjected to the stipulations of the covenant, or to be obliterated if they objected. A covenant is never about an agreement between two equals.
The only difference between primitive tribal cultures and modern society is the scale and the means of control. Once sovereign power has been legitimized by being conferred by higher powers or ideals, there is no check on the will or actions of the ruling elite. The "state" becomes an abstract person with a monopoly on power that has been "mystically" conferred, and is inviolate and unimpeachable. The nation is perceived by the people as consecrated by God - a holy entity - and nationalism is religion secularized and the nation is thereby sanctified.
Implicit in a covenant between the ruled and the rulers is the subtext of what will happen to you if you "break the rules." This does not have to be spelled out - it can be conveyed in symbolic images or events.
The covenant at Sinai is given amid a huge display of such terrible power, with the full fanfare of fire, brimstone, thunder, and lightning. […] The wide differential between the treaty "partners" is summarized succinctly in the description of their conversation: "Moses spoked and God answered him with peals of thunder." (Ex. 19:19) "I am Oz, the great and powerful. Who are you?" :I am Dorothy, the meek and weak" begins the familiar parody of the Sinai theophany that exposes God as an inept hot-air balloonist from Kansas. Toto pulls back the curtain of the holy of holies, and we see the all too human wizard from Kansas generating his own mysterium temendum at a microphone.
It is at this point that we see the true source of the power of the elite - the will to believe inherent in human beings. They don't WANT to know the truth because when the system of transcendent omnipotence is debunked, when the elite's ability to grant wishes, confer a heart, brain, and courage is exposed as not having a source in transcendence at all but in humbuggery, the people know - somewhere inside - that they will then be left to their own resources in the haunted forest of the wicked witch and her army of shrieking monkeys and stomping giants. There are very few Dorothys in this world. Most people are like the residents of Oz - preferring the lies and illusions as long as they can go about their business singing "Oh ho ho, ha ha ha … life is great in the Merry old land of Oz!
And perhaps that is not a bad thing. For those who do not have the heart, courage, and brains of Dorothy and her friends, it IS better to stay inside the walls of Oz and to believe in the Wizard and to believe in the covenant that the Wizard will always protect them from not only what is "out there," but also their own weaknesses and lack of will or ability to "go home." And for many people, Oz IS home.
In our world, as in the movie, the Wizard creates the official culture. The "official culture" is what the people are told or made to believe by various means which elicits from them their agreement to support with their energy, thoughts - even their lives - the will of the Wizard, the King and the shaman. In some primitive cultures, the King controls the shaman, but most often, the shaman controls the King as well. The important point is that in all times and places the few control the many by this implicit - if not explicit - covenant. And in the end, the simple fact is this: All elites take great care to make sure that the rules, the taboos, the constituted laws, the perceptions of the people, serve to maintain their power and control.
Keep in mind that the Land of Oz is a land of illusion and delusion - the belief in the omnipotence of the Wizard. This means that we can look at the problem in terms of realities. There is Reality One: Kansas, Reality Two, Oz, and Reality Three - the wizard behind the curtain, pulling levers, creating smoke and mirrors and shouting into a microphone to create and sustain reality Two - the Oz illusion. Reality Three - the most unreal of them all - is, in the words of Jacques Vallee, "the basis for everything" that is perceived and believed in Oz. It is the reality that very few people ever perceive - no, nor do they want to perceive it. And it is a reality that manufactures and propagates LIES. It has taken complete, overt, control of America through George W. Bush.

Eyewitness News has learned that doctors at Beth Israel Medical Center are caring for the two people who have the Bubonic plague. - The Bubonic plague claimed millions of lives in Europe and Asia in the Middle Ages. Now sources confirm for Eyewitness News the probably presence of the plague in two patients here in New York. The pair is a married couple from New Mexico who were in the city on vacation. - Doctors say they believe the couple was infected in their home state after sleeping in a sleeping bags that had been outdoors on their property for several weeks. Those sleeping bags are now being tested. Officials say there are 20 to 30 cases of Bubonic plague worldwide each year. If caught early, the disease is very treatable, but it is often mistaken for a cold. If treatment is delayed, the plague can, of course, be fatal.
World braces for 'triumphant' Bush - The world now faces President George W. Bush triumphant after the midterm elections. His Republican Party is in command of both Houses of Congress, and Bush can claim a potent new mandate for an assertive foreign policy whose unilateralist "America First" implications have disconcerted friends and foes alike. - "We are dealing with a power that has no limit in its dealing with foreign issues," said Mohammed Shaker, head of the Egyptian Council on Foreign Relations, whose wariness of a Bush administration unrestrained by any other branch of government was widely shared beyond U.S. shores. - In Asia, officials were trying to assess what the elections could mean for their region. Taku Yamasaki, secretary-general of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party, concluded that America's War on terrorism would continue even more forcefully, since the Republican victory "confirms that public opinion remained united behind the Bush administration's policy."Comment: Of course, we may never know if that is true. An administration that would do what the Bush Gang has already done, wouldn't stop short of fixing the election. We truly face dark times.
Canada is a whining country that has been freeloading off the Unites States defence budget for decades," nothing but a "Soviet Canuckistan." These words were spoken by failed presidential-candidate-turned-television-host Pat Buchanan in response to the objection of a U.S law by Canadian officials. This law is demanding that photos and fingerprints be taken from some Arab-Canadian visitors to the country. While this law is not an unreasonable request, the comments made by Buchanan are blatantly rude and ignorant. In addition, Mr.Buchanan was also quoted for calling Canada a "safe haven for terrorists." - If Canada is such a "haven for terrorists," as Buchanan puts it, then perhaps he can explain why there are no unibombers or snipers killing innocent citizens and instilling fear throughout the country.
Joy for Republicans in mid-term polls - George Bush's Republicans have been given a major vote of confidence in the US mid-term elections. It is only the third time in a century that the president's party has gained House seats in a mid-term election — after Presidents Franklin Roosevelt in 1934 and Bill Clinton in 1998. Republicans appeared helped by George Bush's popularity, his energetic campaigning and by the relatively low number of competitive races.
George W. Bush is set to drive the agenda in Washington for the remainder of his term after a historic midterm election in which the GOP gained control of the Senate and built on its majority in the House.
Last night I had a dream about the C's remark:

In my dream, I was shown that if Bush prevails in his plans, he and the group he represents are the "magnet" that will accelerate the Earth Changes which will include - ultimately - the near total destruction of the United States. There was, for a brief moment, a window of opportunity to change the future for large masses of human beings. That window has now closed. America itself has chosen. Even if we suspect that HAARP was activated prior to the elections to insure a Bush victory - even if we suspect that activation of HAARP may have influenced the recent spate of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions - the bottom line is: this has been reported over and over again, revealed by insiders, published by the underground, and still the public chooses the "official culture" as the arbiter of their reality. They have given over their will to the Beast, sowing the wind, and shall reap the whirlwind.

17 die in Luxembourg air crash - The plane crashed after 10 a.m., five minutes before the scheduled landing of the plane. Findel airport was immediately closed and incoming planes were diverted to other airports in Germany and Belgium.
12 killed in French train fire - The fire broke out as the overnight train was leaving the eastern city of Nancy, officials in the Meurthe-et-Moselle region said. The train had been heading from Paris to Vienna via Strasbourg, near the border with Germany. Authorities were initially attributing the cause to an electrical problem, possibly in the heating system. Those killed, most by smoke inhalation, were six men, five women and one child, authorities said. Their nationality was not immediately known.
25 die in Egypt bus crash - The bus, filled with workers returning from the Red Sea coastal tourist region, ran into a lorry transporting gravel which was trying to do a U-turn on the road, 60 km (40 miles) east of the capital on Wednesday. Police, who had earlier given a death toll of 29, said 18 died immediately on impact and seven died later in hospital. - Egypt has one of the worst traffic accident rates in the world, due largely to speeding, reckless driving and bad road conditions.
Tornado, violent storms in Alabama - The tornado apparently was spawned by a band of storms that swept through the southern part of the state. Much of the area was under a tornado watch. Forecasts warned of additional storms and possible tornadoes in southeastern Alabama, southwestern Georgia and the Florida Panhandle.
As Moscow emerges from the shock of last month's hostage crisis, there is growing concern that innocent members of the capital's small Chechen community are being singled out for persecution. - Marie Struthers, from Human Rights Watch, says there is a well-established pattern of discrimination and abuse by police against Chechens in Russia. "Police in Moscow don't have a terrific track record in human rights. What we've seen in the last few days is an increase of arbitrary arrests of Chechens and others of Caucasian origin," she told CNN.
Thousands of protesters are expected to descend on a U.S. military base near the Italian city of Pisa to protest against a possible U.S.-led war in Iraq. - A much larger anti-war march is due to take place in nearby Florence on Thursday, when more than 100,000 demonstrators are expected to take to the streets. - Established in 1952, Camp Darby served as a staging post for U.S. arms and personnel in the 1991 Gulf War.
Opposition march ends in violence in Venezuela - Caracas city police and federal National Guardsmen allowed the red-clad Chavistas to impede the opposition march before the Guard finally launched a massive cloud of tear gas to disperse them. Sixteen people, including three police officers and an Associated Press Television News cameraman, were wounded, said city health secretary Pedro Aristimuno. - Venezuela is a major U.S. oil supplier. Chavez has irked the Bush administration in the past with his suspected ties with leftist Colombian rebels, his close friendship with Cuba's Fidel Castro, his opposition to hemispheric free trade. Chavez has insisted, however, Venezuela will remain a reliable supplier of crude oil to the United States. Venezuela's opposition has threatened to start an indefinite general strike that could affect oil processing if Chavez tries to prevent the non-binding referendum on his ouster.
Justices ruled against a young man from Guatemala who claims he fled to America after being threatened by guerrillas. His asylum request was denied by U.S. immigration officials, but an appeals court overturned that decision by the executive branch of government. Without hearing arguments, the Supreme Court said the Bush administration -- not courts -- has the right to make those types of decisions.
