The most successful tyranny is not the one that uses force to assure uniformity but the one that removes the awareness of other possibilities, that makes it seem inconceivable that other ways are viable, that removes the sense that there is an outside.

November 5, 2002 - COINTELPRO and The Speed of Light - MOST of the scientific community is being manipulated by ridicule and fear and just plain COINTELPRO which is the only thing that exceeds the speed of light in science.

Cassiopaea disappearing from Google - You know you must be on to something when you experience COINTELPRO and MAJOR censorship. Please complain to google.

Google censoring web content - Researchers at the highly-respected Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University have found that the company is actively removing sites from its database, and that this censorship is going unnoticed. - Jonathan Zittrain and Benjamin Edelman have built up a reputation for their careful analysis of the ways in which web content is filtered, censored and controlled. They have looked in detail at the practices of national governments, specifically China and Saudi Arabia, and provided lots of useful information for those of us who want to promote freedom of speech both online and offline. -

Their latest paper deals with the differences between the results returned when searching google.com, the US/world version of the site, the French site at google.fr and the German site at google.de. -

They have discovered over one hundred sites which can be found by searchers in the US but not by those in Germany or France. - Responding to the discovery, Google spokesman Nate Tyler said on tech news programme ZDNN that the sites were removed to avoid the possibility of legal action being taken against the company, and that each site was removed only after a specific complaint from the government of the country concerned. - [...]

On first sight this seems perfectly reasonable - after all, Google isn't a public service but a private company trying to make money out of its technology and database, and it has no obligation to index everything. It certainly has a duty to its owners (it's a privately held company) to stay out of legal battles with governments, since they can be pretty expensive. - [...]

The result is that one of the web's most important tools is being deliberately broken at the request of governments, with no publicity, no legal review and no court orders. [...]

The problem is not that content is being censored - that is inevitable and in many cases desirable. The problem is not that content is being censored - that is inevitable and in many cases desirable. I agree with our current laws against child pornography and have no difficulty at all endorsing the view that these sites should not be allowed online.

The problem is that Google itself is deciding what should be censored and that its motives are entirely commercial, making it possible for government agencies to influence it without having to go through due process or defend their requests in public.

The Yellowstone supervolcano has erupted regularly over the past 2 million years at intervals of about 600,000 years. The last time was about 640,000 years ago, making another eruption "imminent" in geological time. - Geologists warn of the threat posed by a supervolcanic eruption that could devastate the global climate, disrupt agriculture and cause severe food shortages. -

Bill McGuire, professor of geohazards at University College London, said many supervolcanoes are not typical hill-shaped structures but huge, collapsed craters called calderas that are filled with hot magma and are harder to detect. One potentially dangerous supervolcano exists under Yellowstone National Park in the United States and was only detected in the Sixties when infra-red satellite photographs revealed a magma-filled caldera 70km long and 30km wide.

One of the biggest supervolcano eruptions, 74,000 years ago, was at Toba in Sumatra, may have pushed man to the brink of extinction. Toba, which is estimated to have been a maximum eight-point explosion, caused a volcanic winter lasting several years and reduced the population to a few thousand, resulting in a genetic "bottleneck" that can be observed in our genes today. - "There's nowhere to hide from the effects of a supervolcano. When one goes off it will be like a nuclear winter without the radiation," Professor McGuire said.

Supervolcano Questions - Examples of volcanoes that produced exceedingly voluminous pyroclastic eruptions and formed large calderas in the past 2 million years would include Yellowstone, Long Valley in eastern California, Toba in Indonesia, and Taupo in New Zealand. Other "supervolcanoes" would likely include the large caldera volcanoes of Japan, Indonesia, Alaska (e.g. Aniakchak, Emmons, Fisher), and other areas.

Three extremely large explosive eruptions have occurred at Yellowstone in the past 2.1 million years with a recurrence interval of about 600,000 to 800,000 years. More frequent eruptions of basalt and rhyolite lava flows have occurred before and after the large caldera-forming events. For example, scientists have identified about 30 different rhyolite lava flows that erupted after the most recent caldera eruptions, about 640,000 years ago, from vents inside the caldera. The most recent was about 70,000 years ago. Many of these eruptions were separated in time by several ten's of thousands of years. Because the evidence of earlier eruptions may have been either buried or destroyed, we do not really know how often the volcano has actually erupted.

The volcanic system in Yellowstone National Park is displaying the same general types of restless activity today as it has since volcanic activity was first analyzed more than 50 years ago. Current behavior includes extensive seismicity, periods of uplift and subsidence of the caldera related to the movements of hydrothermal fluids that are produced and maintained by deeper magma beneath the Park, and intermittent changes to hydrothermal features at the surface.

Alaska Quake Triggers Yellowstone Jolts - By 8:30 a.m. MST Monday Nov. 4 – about 17 hours after the Alaskan quake – more than 200 small earthquakes had been detected occurring in clusters throughout the Yellowstone area. The quakes were recorded by the Yellowstone seismic network operated by the University of Utah Seismograph Stations. - There also are preliminary reports the Alaska quake may have triggered smaller tremors at The Geysers geothermal area in northern California.

The apparent triggering of the Yellowstone tremors by the Alaska quake “confirms what we are beginning to see worldwide – that earthquakes can be triggered by other earthquakes at great distances, more so than we had thought before,” said Robert. B. Smith, a University of Utah professor of geology and geophysics and coordinating scientist for the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory. Clusters of small earthquakes in time and space are common in Yellowstone. However, the clusters of Yellowstone earthquakes following the Alaskan mainshock extended across much of the park and were not concentrated in a single location.

Comment: As it happens, the time given above for the supervolcano eruption at Toba is right in the ballpark of the time the C's have said that the planet that used to be between Mars and Jupiter exploded and many of the inhabitants fled to colonize earth. Perhaps the genetic anomaly from that time is related? And perhaps that eruption - and other periodic eruptions - are related to the approach of "visitors" in our solar system? And I don't mean aliens either.

Q: (L) Does this cluster of comets orbit around the Sun?
A: Yes. Your government already knows they're coming close again. [...]
Q: (A) I understand that the main disaster is going to come from this comet cluster...
A: Disasters involve cycles in the human experiential cycle which corresponds to the passage of comet cluster.
Q: (A) I understant that this comet cluster is cyclic and comes every 3600 years. I want to know something about the shape of this comet cluster. I can hardly imagine...
A: Shape is variable. Effect depends on closeness of passage.
Q: (A) We were asking at some point where it will be coming from. The answer was that we were supposed to look at a spirograph. ...Now, spirograph suggests that these comets will not come from one direction, but from many directions at once. Is this correct?
A: Very good!!!
Q: (A) Okay, they will come from many directions...
A: But, initial visibility presents as single, solid body.
Q: (A) Do we know what is the distance to this body at present?
A: Suggest you keep your eyes open! ...Did you catch the significance of the answer regarding time table of cluster and brown star? Human cycle mirrors cycle of catastrophe. Earth benefits in form of periodic cleansing. Time to start paying attention to the signs. They are escalating. They can even be "felt" by you and others, if you pay attention. [...] Point is to watch, look, listen.
Q: (A) When you watch, look and listen, you are getting some signals, and these signals cause a certain pattern of thinking which was not yet able to emerge. But after you receive certain signals, you start to think in a different way. So, you cannot now think in a different way, but when you learn that this and this has happened, then you start to think in a different pattern. So, you cannot now DO things, but you always have to be ready to change your thinking at any moment when you understand more, when you see more, when you notice more, when you put things together which are not yet together. Then, there may be a big change of perspective, a total change. And this we have to keep our minds and thinking patterns open and ready to change, and work and put the puzzle and mosaic together. And, this is all that counts. It is this work that we are now doing that counts. It is only doing our best, and what is it? Our best? It will change. I believe so. That is the idea. So, everything depends on this.
A: Yes. You see, my dear, you cannot anticipate that which is not anticipatable. [...] We are glad you noticed this birth of the spike. [...] 27 days of record heat out of 30, oh my oh my! Suggest you awaken your internet pals, as they are too busy chasing "goblins" to notice. [...] In Florida now, where to next? How about a shattering subduction quake in Pacific Northwest of U.S.? We estimate 10.4 on the Richter scale. We have warned of Rainier. Imagine a 150 meter high tsunami in Puget Sound... Rainier... caldera... Expect one. ... All areas experience accelerating "freak weather patterns."
Q: (L) Okay, all of these freaky weather patterns and bizarre things going on on the planet, how does it relate to the comet cluster and the brown star? Is it related?
A: Human experiential cycle intersects. ... Approach of wave stimulates precursor activity which in turn causes effects which in turn stimulates further "heating up" of activity... "El Nino, La Nina," etc... Global warming, a part of the human experiential cycle. ... You may do as you wish, just keep one eye and one ear tuned to current events. And, very important, log dreams. Arkadiusz too!
Q: (L) Is there going to be some communication to us through our dreams?
A: Visions.

'Elders of Zion' show begins airing tonight - Egypt tomorrow begins a monthlong television drama based on the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion," despite international appeals to halt the project based on a century-old fabrication about a Jewish plot to control the world. The series, called "Horse Without a Horseman," has a cast of about 400 actors and will air in prime time during the month of Ramadan, when Egyptian Muslims are home eating the extended nightly meal that breaks the daily fast, and are often glued to the television. - The U.S. State Department has condemned the series and urged Egypt to prevent it from airing. The American Lawyers Committee for Human Rights has called the series "inflammatory material [that] can only perpetuate conflict and the ensuing human suffering for all people in the region." - The American Jewish Committee and other groups staged a protest yesterday outside the Egyptian Embassy in Washington under the slogan "Hate Kills" and "Stand Against Hate."

Comment: In the summer of 2001, Cassiopaea.org, came under a serious attack by members of certain Jewish organizations. These individuals accused us of publishing "anti-Semitic" material. They wrote: "We believe your site is anti semetic,(sic) and either paid for by Nazi's or someone who HATES JEWS. We want you to remove your lies about our religion."

The attack became rather vicious and public, and these representatives of organizations that claim to "fight anti-semitism" and hate, etc - not only lowered themselves to publicly libeling us and our work, writing such things as "Ark is giving Jewish references, yet he's an anti-semite and running a mailing list, brainwashing other Jews against our religion with lies." - but also went to the trouble of researching and publishing our home address on the internet, on Jewish discussion boards, where they "invited" anyone who might live in our area go and "take care" of us in some unspecified manner.

Doing a little research of my own, we discovered that the center of activity was an egroup called "The Anti-missionary List," which is "devoted to helping everyone fight and respond to the lies of Christianity." On the site, the stated philosophy is, verbatim:

"On this list you can learn how and why the New Testament is nothing more than a compilation of pre-existing Pagan Doctrines stolen from Mithraic worship, Zoroaster, and others. You will learn Christian Missionary tactics and brain-washing technques, (sic) from people who have researched this all their lives, former Christians, etc.

"Christianity is the religion mentioned in Isaiah that would try and destroy the keeping of Torah and true worship."

I joined this group and a few others and read the discussions of Jews talking to other Jews while thinking that no "goyim" was present.

Did you ever overhear something that you were not intended to hear - something very hurtful - spoken by someone who pretended to be a friend, and only by hearing words from their own mouth do you realize that they could not possibly be your friend? If so, you probably remember the sensation of coldness that crept over your skin, the sudden pounding of your heart so that you thought it might explode, and the feeling that a big, cold stone had suddenly formed in the pit of your stomach.

That was what happened to me as I read the exchanges on these Jewish discussion groups. I was literally speechless. A discussion group that claimed to be composed of individuals involved in "educational" activities - aish, they called it - and dedicated to enlightening non-Jews about Jews, so as to end the "hate and prejudice," was the most hate-filled, prejudicial, and truly disgusting group interaction I have ever witnessed among human beings. The chief theme that emerged from these discussions was that the Jews sincerely and deeply believe that they are literally the ONLY "Chosen" people on the planet, and that this chosenness is absolutely Divine and without question, and anybody who is NOT a Jew is literally less than human. Every other religion is nothing but lies, and only Jews can ever, under any and all circumstances, be righteous.

I had always thought that people who claimed that Jews have such an attitude were just anti-Semitic. I never believed it. Anybody who said anything bad about Jews was just lying as far as I was concerned. I was finding it hard to believe it even as I witnessed it in these discussions.

Of course, we can consider the argument that the best and worst of humanity exist in any group of people, religious, ethnic, or otherwise. But if that is the case, just as it is with any other group, the bad apples can spoil it for the rest of them.

After all the years of my desperate seeking for an understanding that might enable me to contribute in some small way to the effort to end hate and prejudice against Jews; after all the years of being focused on my feeling of needing to do something FOR the Jews; my years of pain and grief and tears for my lost family and the families of all other Jews destroyed in the Holocaust; I was brought to witness THIS?

I also realized, after this encounter, that something very dangerous was taking place with the activities of such "anti-defamation" groups. Even though their stated intent is exactly the opposite, what they are actually doing is arousing Anti-Semitic sentiment in non-Jews by going around so rudely and obnoxiously accusing people of anti-Semitism, and insisting on the rightness of their own opinion.

What is frequently seen in these campaigns is essentially a demand for suspension of the rights of Free Speech and opinion in order to "be nice to the Jews who have suffered so much." The Jewish program of seeking out and silencing what they call "anti-Semitism" often amounts to little more than abnegating the rights of other people to think and speak according to their own lights and beliefs. The guilt hook of the Holocaust is used shamelessly and with sickening repetition.

Until we experienced it ourselves, we didn't believe it. Just think about it: we were being told that we may not publish channeled material - none of which promotes hate or discrimination by any stretch of the imagination - simply because it did not agree with their views. And if we did not buckle under, we were given a taste of what was going to be done to us. We could see an endless campaign of libel and defamation undertaken by groups with unlimited access to money and resources. We could see the possibilities of physical and material interference, even to the extent of making it impossible for us to provide a living for our family.

Of course, as noted, this is not the case with all Jews. We have Jewish members of our Quantum Future School. We have Jewish readers who wrote to encourage us and who said we ought not to "buckle under the demands of a bunch of rabid Zionists." But anybody who is paying attention knows that to stand against that bunch is to practically commit suicide.

So, even though we were trying to suggest a significant validation for why Jews might be targeted for repeated attack by the Matrix - which might have served to explain and validate their view that they WERE targeted more than other groups - we were certainly not allowed to suggest that it was not because their God chose them to be special. They are allowed to claim that they are Chosen by God and that their religion is the only RIGHT one, but we were not allowed to suggest that THEIR religion might be part of the control system.

I was revolted and discouraged and heartbroken. I realized with a sickening thud in the pit of my stomach that - like all of us - Jews who have given their own power away are their own worst enemy. There was nothing I could do. It was clear that the powers in control of the Jews were the same as the powers in control of the rest of humanity. And their belief in their "specialness" made them even more vulnerable than the rest of us. It was the hook upon which their egos were hung. We removed the material. (It can still be obtained privately, and most of it is included in our book The Occult Significance of 9-11)

Florida votes - and the talk is of another 'fix' - one radio station took calls from Floridians claiming difficulties with machines that registered votes for the wrong candidate. "I voted for McBride but the machine counted it as Bush," one enraged listener told talk-show host Neil Rogers on WQAM radio. "I tell you now, this election is fixed," Mr Rogers fulminated in response. - The same tale was reported by David Templer, 40, a lawyer who voted early in North Miami Beach. "It was very disturbing," he complained, saying that his vote for Mr McBride kept getting registered for Mr Bush.

Bush's Secret Society Hits the Mainstream - Old Blue's dirty underwear is hanging out to dry: There's a probing investigation of the two-century-old brotherhood of Skull and Bones, G.W. Bush's ticket to success - September's Secrets of the Tomb: Skull and Bones, the Ivy League, and the Hidden Paths of Power , by journalist Alexandra Robbins, quickly became a campus bestseller. Robbins promised the first definitive look inside the world's most famous undergraduate organization, a clandestine fraternity that connects such WASPy machers as William Howard Taft, Henry Luce, John Kerry, and George Bush père et fils. -

Most of the "secrets" of Secrets consist of tedious descriptions of the furnishing of the Tomb (the Bones' private clubhouse) and hoary rituals stretching back to 1833, the year the society was founded by opium heir William H. Russell. And when it gets to the good stuff—the consolidation and transmission of influence in this country—Robbins pulls her punches.

A chapter entitled "The Network" fleshes out the accusation that George W. Bush rode his daddy's coattails. "[W.] had his press secretary say to me, 'Skull and Bones is just one of those things that should stay secret,' " Robbins recalls. "Publicly he distances himself, but privately he relies on those connections."

After 20 pages of solid investigation—Bonesmen smoothed W.'s way into college, handed both Bushes business opportunities, invested heavily in their campaigns—Robbins sums up as though describing an efficient telecommunications technology: "While the Bush family is certainly Skull and Bones' most powerful political dynasty, other prominent Bonesmen have also effectively taken advantage of the Bones network."

"I didn't want anyone to accuse me of not being fair on any side," Robbins says, displaying a moral neutrality familiar from her subject, Dubya—another insider masquerading as a just-folks outsider. -

The Skulls depicted a Bones initiation ritual with a Mafia-style abduction-murder and a bloody ceremony in an all-white, Bond-villain lair. In April 2001, Rosenbaum published a more believable, though still sensational, account in the Observer . Rosenbaum says he felt like an outsider at Yale, a public-school-educated Jew adrift in the halls of WASP privilege. He has been writing about his fascination with the secrets of Bones since 1977. Last spring, with the help of students and an array of night-vision cameras and hidden mics, he recorded the Bones courtyard from the roof of a neighboring dorm. The tape captured many un-p.c. statements (e.g., "Please take that plunger out of my ass!") and a staged throat-slashing tableau. -

Though Robbins repeats all the hot details, which generally coincide with her own descriptions (including a cranium-shaped container filled with red Kool-Aid), she blithely discredits Rosenbaum's scenario, calling it "far from authentic" based on the statements of Bonesmen. "We just wanted to fuck with that prick," one told her. -

"Can you say 'reckless disregard for the truth'? Might [her Bones source] have been a bit self-interested in his claim?" Rosenbaum wrote, incensed that Robbins had contradicted his documentary evidence (backed up by sources close to both Bonesmen and students involved in the filming). Of course, given the threats Robbins says she has received from Bonesmen angry at her prying ("There are a lot of us at newspapers. . . . Good luck with your career"), perhaps fear—not incompetence—led her to obscure the story.

Mr Burrell says the Queen told him: "There are powers at work in this country about which we have no knowledge. He told the Daily Mirror: "She made sure I knew she was being deadly serious." But Mr Burrell says he has no idea who or what the Queen was talking about. He added: "There were many things she could have been referring to. But she was clearly warning me to be vigilant."

According to several articles I have just reviewed, the combined spending for television advertising by the candidates of the current election, is about $900,000,000.00 dollars.

Yes folks, that number is correct: Nine Hundred Million.

I think that's beyond outrageous.

Voter News Service, a vote-counting group used by major news organizations, cited dissatisfaction with its exit poll analysis Tuesday and said it would not release any "national surveys of voter attitudes" on election night. VNS issued a statement saying it was "not satisfied with the accuracy of today's exit poll analysis and will not be in a position on election night to publish the results of state and national surveys of voter attitudes." That means election night reporting will lack the usual exit poll demographic estimates to help explain how and why people voted the way they did. Comment: Do you suppose they are worried that the voter attitudes will not "mesh" with the actual results? Do you suppose somebody is "fixing" the elections??? I mean, how can you be "dissastisfied" with an exit poll analysis? What is it about the "voter attitudes" that needs to be covered up?

Waiting for results - Tuesday's voting will determine Bush's ability to govern for the next two years and seek re-election in 2004. - The outcome in the Senate will largely decide whether Bush can push through judiciary nominations, including for the Supreme Court, and pursue his tax-cut plan while leading wars on terrorism and, possibly, against Iraq. voters in 36 states choose governors.

To watch U.S. President George W. Bush on the campaign trail in recent weeks, one might think a possible U.S. war with Iraq was the top issue in Tuesday's midterm elections. - As Bush hit the campaign trail this autumn, hardly a stop was made where he didn't take the opportunity to assail Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. "Saddam told the world he didn't have weapons of mass destruction, but he's got them," Bush said in South Dakota on Sunday. "I view him as serious threat to America. I see him as a threat to our country because I understand his hatred toward America," the president told an Iowa rally on Monday. Bush has been engaging in this public campaign for months, trying to build support among the American people -- and America's allies -- for attacking Iraq. - The latest CNN-USA Today-Gallup Poll shows Iraq falling behind the economy and education when voters are asked to rank their most important issues heading into Tuesday's vote.

U.S. intelligence believes four nations other than the United States -- Iraq, North Korea, Russia and France -- probably possess hidden samples of the smallpox virus, a U.S. official said. Comment: That's pretty handy. After all, if smallpox breaks out, it wouldn't be a good thing to be the only country known to have it...

France and Russia 'have secret smallpox supplies' - Four nations – Iraq, France, North Korea and Russia – probably possess secret stocks of the smallpox virus, while the al-Qa'ida terrorist group has unsuccessfully tried to obtain it, says US intelligence. -

North Korea threatens missile tests - A positive outlook for last week's talks was complicated after North Korea's shock admission in October that it had been pursuing a nuclear weapons program in violation of a 1994 deal with Washington. In 1998, North Korea shocked Japan and other neighbors when it test fired a missile that flew over Japan's main island of Honshu. Pyongyang later said it would not carry out further tests until 2003 at the earliest. U.S., Japanese and South Korean leaders have agreed to demand that North Korea dismantle its nuclear program -- a stance that has received support from other Asian countries, including China, at the ASEAN summit.

Pentagon official called a missile strike that killed six suspected al Qaeda members in Yemen "a very successful tactical operation" and said the U.S. must "keep the pressure on" terrorists wherever they are. - an unmanned CIA Predator drone launched a "Hellfire" missile early Monday and struck a car carrying the men, including the al Qaeda chief in that country who was wanted for the bombing of the USS Cole. Comment: Hmmm... they can hit a car with that thing? Is that anything like a precision hit on the Pentagon...?

The hellfire missile from the unmanned drone arrived without warning and offered little chance of escape. The alleged senior al-Qa'ida official, Qaed Salim Sinan al-Harethi, and his five companions would literally not have known what hit them. All that remained yesterday of the vehicle in which the al-Qa'ida suspects were travelling in the Yemeni desert was a pile of charred debris scattered in the sand. Many of the remains were too badly burnt to allow identification. - Clifford Beal, editor of Jane's Defence Weekly, said: "It doesn't seem they were given the opportunity to surrender. They were taken out Israeli-style."

Washington is now ready, willing and terrifyingly equipped to launch pre-emptive strikes on suspected terrorists wherever and whenever it finds them. Amazingly, it is also able to do so from thousands of miles away, without risk to its own pilots or ground forces. The agents who flew the Predator, using a joystick, and who attacked Harethi's vehicle using a real-time camera and a laser, were most probably sitting in the CIA headquarters at Langley, Virginia, eight miles west of Washington. - The strike on Sunday morning was not the first time America has used missiles fired from Predators against terrorists. In Afghanistan a Predator was used to kill al-Qa'ida's chief of operations, Mohammed Atef, and in May one was employed in a failed effort to kill a factional Afghan leader, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, who was trying to topple the government of Hamid Karzai. But this was the first time one has been used outside Afghanistan, or at least the first time the US has admitted it. Comment: Sounds a lot like the World Trade Center Attacks...

American officials say the legal basis for assassinations of suspected terrorists is ample. First, they claim that Article 2, Section 2, of the US Constitution implicitly sanctions the right of a president, as commander-in-chief, to order lethal force against individuals in time of war. Last September Congress also specifically authorised Mr Bush to use "all necessary force" to deal with people involved with the 11 September attacks. - Suppose President Saddam defies UN weapons inspectors again, and invites upon himself the threatened "serious consequences". Would it not be better for those consequences to be a single hit against a single person, than a war to topple him in which thousands of Iraqi civilians would die? Comment: Hoisted on your own petard, Georgie boy...

History has shown one simple rule: authorities cannot be trusted with the right to act as judge, jury and executioner when pursuing their enemies. - America under President George Bush has rejected internationalism. It has turned its back on applying any of the normal rights given to a citizen within its own borders to those it counts as terrorists abroad. Like Ariel Sharon, it believes that unlawful deeds exempt their perpetrators from the protection of the law, that in the "war against terror" any tactic is justified, whatever the "collateral" damage. If we say a man is a terrorist, then that is what he or she is. And if we get it wrong, that's simply a casualty of war. Just because officials say the men killed in a car by the CIA on Sunday were guilty, doesn't mean they were. Only due process of law could decide that.

The chairman of the militant Jewish Defense League was declared brain-dead Monday, his lawyer said, after authorities said he tried to kill himself in the prison where he was awaiting trial on charges of conspiring to bomb a mosque and a U.S. congressman's office.

Asteroid twice as large as expected, according to NASA scientists, who on Tuesday released the first image of the encounter. After the Stardust craft passed within 2,000 miles (3,300 km) of asteroid Annefrank, mission researchers determined that it is about 5 miles (8 km) in diameter. The crater-pocked, oddly shaped boulder turned out to reflect much less sunlight than originally thought, which accounted for the error of the earlier size estimate. NASA spacecraft swept within 1,900 miles of a small asteroid in a practice run before a much closer brush with a comet scheduled for January 2004. - The flyby was intended to allow flight controllers at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to hone skills that will be needed January 2, 2004, when Stardust is scheduled to fly within 100 miles of the comet Wild-2's nucleus. - The $200 million Stardust mission was launched in February 1999.

Large eruptions at Ecuador's Reventador volcano subside - "You could say the patient's fever is lowering, although it is premature to say for sure," Hugo Yepez, director of Ecuador's Geophysical Institute. - He said no major eruptions had been registered in recent hours at Reventador -- a 3,562-meter (11,775-foot) volcano located 60 miles (95 kilometers) northeast of Quito. Sunday's eruptions forced President Gustavo Noboa to declare a state of emergency and the closure of Quito's international airport.

Tropical Brazil is the country most struck by lightning in the world and it suffers the highest death toll and serious economic damage from electric thunderstorms, new research showed Tuesday.

The confessed killer of Carol Neulander took the witness stand Friday to describe how he met Fred Neulander, a popular New Jersey rabbi he claims later hired him to kill his wife. - After swearing on a Bible to testify truthfully, Jenoff admitted that he lied numerous times throughout his life about having worked for the Central Intelligence Agency. Jenoff attributed that lie, and others, to his feeling of inferiority and low self-esteem. -

Although his older brother enjoyed the Jewish rite of bar mitzvah, Jenoff told jurors that it troubled him that he never received a Jewish education and did not learn Hebrew. "I felt like an inferior Jew," said Jenoff. - "Did you ever have any employment with the federal government, specifically the CIA?" prosecutor James Lynch. "No, I didn't, sir," Jenoff answered. "That was listed on my resume, that I spent approximately 14 years with the Central Intelligence Agency."

Jenoff said he got the idea about how to pad his resume with information that could not easily be refuted by the media. "Basically, it was from reading books or watching movies, TV shows. I could talk the talk and walk the walk," he said. Jenoff admitted that he also lied about graduating from Monmouth College, now Monmouth University. Although he claims to have been a Baltimore Police Department informant for two years, Jenoff testified that he lied about being an employee of the agency.

Gay sheep that mate only with other rams have different brain structures from "straight" sheep, a finding that may shed light on human sexuality, U.S. researchers said on Monday. - First the scientists watched the sheep to be sure of their behavior -- something that cannot be done with humans. Then they took apart their brains. "There had been reports in humans that a certain area of the hypothalamus, the preoptic area ... was usually larger in males than females," Roselli said. This area was also found to be larger in heterosexual humans than in homosexual men. - The sheep had similar differences in their brains, the researchers told a meeting in Orlando, Florida, of the Society for Neuroscience.

November 4, 2002 - From: The Executive Committee Against Uppity Citizens

Dear friend,

On behalf of Shell, Mobil, and Exxon; Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, and GE; all the Enrons, Halliburtons, and Harkens; President Bush, Vice President Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and the other CEOs of the Cabinet; and thousands of us who are working for a better life for the wealthiest Americans, we have one simple request: Could you please just stay home tomorrow?

See, we have things to do. Nations to invade. Wetlands to destroy. Oil to drill. Courts to pack. Corporate taxes to cut.

What's frustrating for us is that we're coming up against some pretty stiff resistance. We've spent hundreds of millions of dollars to secure the Senate, but it looks like we just may lose it. Heck, we may even lose the House.

We don't quite get what it is about our agenda that you people don't like, but it's clear that this time, you may be upset enough to actually do something about it. That's why we're writing this message to you today.

Please don't vote. Ask your friends not to vote. What could the harm be in sitting this round out? If you could just stay home on Election Day, we can get back to the important business of running the nation for you, and we won't have to bother you again.

Thank you,
The Executive Committee Against Uppity Citizens

A volcano outside Ecuador's capital spewed a cloud of hot ash Sunday, forcing the closure of its airport and a nearby highway near, and showering Quito in white ash. - Alexandra Avarado of the Geophysical Institute said the volcano began erupting at 7:30 a.m. with a larger blast at 9:00 a.m. The latter blast sent clouds of burning ash that reached the Baeza-Lago Agrio highway. The eruption also threatened the Trans-Ecuadorean oil pipeline that runs close to the area.

A strong earthquake struck 75 miles south of Fairbanks in east-central Alaska Sunday, cracking roads and triggering mudslides, but there were no immediate reports of injuries, officials said. - The magnitude 7.9 earthquake lasted about two minutes and occurred on the same fault line as the 6.7 quake that shook the area 11 days ago. The epicenter was 90 miles south of Fairbanks, 35 miles east of Denali National Park and 45 miles northeast of Cantwell. - The quake was felt as far away as Seattle, Juneau and Anchorage, according to John Minsch, geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Denver. -

The Oct. 23 earthquake appears to have been a "foreshock" to Sunday's seismic event, seismologist Ratchkovski said, and the Interior will likely be experiencing "thousands of aftershocks" for the next two weeks. She said they shouldn't be anything of Sunday's magnitude but said five-plus, like the 5.1 aftershock that hit later Sunday, will not be unusual.

Alaska earthquake's force felt in Louisiana, and elsewhere - When people saw water sloshing about in ponds, bayous and pools, an earthquake more than 3,000 miles away seemed an unlikely culprit. "My neighbor actually thought there was an alligator in the pond," said Dan Musmanno, 51, of the New Orleans suburb Belle Chasse. "My neighbor's son went out there and said, 'It ain't no alligator.' The water was going back and forth for about a half hour. It was kind of spooky." -

"When you have an earthquake of this size, it generates what we call surface waves," said Dale Grant, a geophysicist with U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo. He said waves of energy travel through the Earth's crust and cause disturbances in water. -

In Mandeville, across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans, Carol Barcia, 47, was sitting with neighbors on the deck of her house around 5 p.m. when she saw boats bounce around. "We noticed the sail boats started leaning over, going back and forth, and the boats' lines were just banging up and down. My boat was banging up against the dock. My neighbor's boat broke a line," Barcia said. "One poor guy across the canal from us fell off his sail boat," said Barcia, a pharmaceutical representative. She said a neighbor rode a boat over and helped the man out of the water. - Grant said he received calls from nuclear power facilities in various states -- including Minnesota and Washington -- that reported unusual water movement. He said an Oklahoma state geologist also reported that farmers there noticed water in ponds sloshed about. Throughout the New Orleans area, people were baffled and frightened by what they saw. Paul Martin, Barcia's 59-year-old neighbor, said an iron cleat bolted to the pier that he ties his boat to was pulled out when his boat got tossed around. "It was quite a sight," he said. "All the boats up and down this bayou were being tossed around like little boats in a bathtub."

Comment: Do ya suppose that Mother Nature is telling Dubya and Cheney and Sharon and Blair that she isn't happy with them? Naaah... But then...

There's a distinctly wintry feel about Cape Town's weather, with a howling south-wester, driving rain - and even the chance of some snow on the mountains of the Western Cape on Monday. -

In Scotland, two sailors, a Pole and a Latvian, were killed in separate accidents on Sunday during heavy storms that severed sea and air links between the mainland and the Shetland Islands. -

In Los Angeles, nearly 200 cars and trucks collided on a foggy stretch of Long Beach Freeway, injuring dozens, nine critically, and closing the highway for hours. -

In the Greek island of Cephalonia, best known as the setting for the movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin, was on Sunday covered by dark grey ash spewed from Sicily's Mount Etna, 500 km away. -

An earthquake hit the Tanzanian capital of Dodoma on Monday, causing some cracks on the walls of the country's parliament, with aftershocks sending members of parliament in a stampede from the building to safety. -

A violent earthquake slammed a remote area of Alaska , delivering a jolt so strong that it created giant waves on lakes around the continent. The magnitude 7.9 quake was one of the strongest every recorded in the United States, and created a ripple effect thousand of kilometres away. -

Aftershocks continue to rock San Giulino di Puglia in Italy on Monday, adding to the misery of thousands of people camped out in tents following an earthquake that killed 29 people, including 26 children who died when their school collapsed. -

In south-western Japan, a strong earthquake hit Oita on Kyusha island, but authorities say there is no danger of a tsunami - a tidal wave caused by an earthquake. It was the second time in as many days that a strong temblor had rattled the earthquake-prone country.

At least 10 people have been killed and dozens hurt by earthquakes in a mountainous region of Pakistan, near the border with China. -

Diplomacy has failed - meaning that only a revolutionary advanced technology will save the Earth from relentless global warming driven by greenhouse gas emissions, scientists have warned this week.

'Dawn-of-time' star holds secrets to Big Bang - The giant star, HE0107-5240, is a galactic rarity because it is virtually metal-free unlike the other, more modern known stars, they wrote in the science journal Nature. - The existence of stars with zero or very low metal content has been hypothesised for decades, but none has ever been found before - throwing the theory into doubt. At the dawn of time these stars contained most of the elements in the universe.

HAARP Defensive Economic Warfare: Before the events of September 11, 2001, the thought of American Military being given the authority to shoot down American civilian airliners loaded with passengers over U.S. territory was inconceivable. Now this and many other measures are necessary for the safety and security of the nation. The attacks were aimed not only at people, government and military but also on the economy, which in the long run could end up harming the entire world. Extreme measures were taken to minimize the initial damage to an already fragile economy; closed U.S. markets, a surprise interest rate cut of half a percent prior to the markets opening, an extended share buy back program for companies. Comment: Wow! Not only is this guy coming very close to describing what HAARP may actually be used for, he is initiating a process of "apologia" for it... it's "okay" to try to fool Mother Nature...

The Bush Double Double Cross - This is an interesting - if complex - scenario that suggests the Bush Reich is leading Israel - and the entire Middle East - into a trap. We have been saying much the same thing but for somewhat different reasons. What is problematical is "who is on first?" Is the entire dynamic "staged?" Are all the players acting out the drama for the audience - the masses of humanity?

John Robinson Sr. was convicted Tuesday of two counts of capital murder in the deaths of the two women -- with whom prosecutors say he had sadomasochistic sexual relationships -- and one count of first-degree murder in the case of a woman whose body was never found.

Buckingham Palace came under pressure to explain why the queen took so long to reveal that Burrell had told her he was safeguarding some of the personal effects of the late Princess of Wales. - Labour member of parliament Paul Flynn described the reason given for the collapse of the trial as "unconvincing" and "not plausible." "The most likely reason is that when Paul Burrell came to give evidence he was going to provide extremely damaging new information which would be damaging to the royal family. This was the reason the trial was halted prematurely on this entirely unconvincing pretext," he told PA.

Judge allows more time for Cheney papers - A federal judge said Thursday he will give the Bush administration an extra three weeks before it must produce documents -- or identify which papers that should remain confidential -- from Vice President Dick Cheney's energy task force.

How mobile phones let spies see our every move - Government's secret Celldar project will allow surveillance of anyone, at any time and anywhere there is a phone signal - Secret radar technology research that will allow the biggest-ever extension of 'Big Brother'-style surveillance in the UK is being funded by the Government. The radical new system, which has outraged civil liberties groups, uses mobile phone masts to allow security authorities to watch vehicles and individuals 'in real time' almost anywhere in Britain. The technology 'sees' the shapes made when radio waves emitted by mobile phone masts meet an obstruction. Signals bounced back by immobile objects, such as walls or trees, are filtered out by the receiver. This allows anything moving, such as cars or people, to be tracked. Previously, radar needed massive fixed equipment to work and transmissions from mobile phone masts were thought too weak to be useful.

There was nothing "mysterious" about the source of Bérenger Saunière's wealth - it all stemmed from the selling of masses - The proof is to be found in his notebooks for the month of January 1894, the 9th January to be precise. He notes 'Stopped there' and draws a line that will prove to be final. Never again will he fill in the fifth column, where he regrouped the masses in threes, showing that they had been said. It should be noted that, at this date, he was in the process of saying masses that dated back to September 1893, or five months in arrears. At the beginning of the same notebook we find him up to ten months in arrears. That means that in July 1893 he was saying masses requested in May 1892! - This site also includes a Historical Chronology of Bérenger Saunière’s activities.

An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale hit wide areas in northern Japan on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. An earthquake of that magnitude is strong enough to cause heavy damage to buildings. The quake, which struck at 12.37 p.m., was centered in the Pacific Ocean off Miyagi Prefecture, about 270 miles north of Tokyo.

Moving in for the kill - The frenetic pace of military preparations in the US and the UK are in stark contrast to the haggling at the UN Security Council in its deliberations over the wording of a new resolution to force Iraq to comply with weapons inspections. France, Russia and China may still be arguing that the UN will need to meet again to green light any military action against Iraq should Saddam Hussein again defy UN weapons inspectors, but in the armed forces of the US and Britain the assumption is that there will be a war against him early next year. - In another sign of the advanced state of preparations for a war early next year the Pentagon has also turned its mind to how the conflict will be reported, offering basic military training to the US journalists who will accompany US combat units.

Saudi Arabia says "No." as a key U.S. ally in the Middle East, it would not allow the United States to use facilities in the country to attack neighboring Iraq, even if a strike was sanctioned by the United Nations. - "We will abide by the decision of the United Nations Security Council and we will cooperate with the Security Council. But as to entering the conflict or using facilities ... that is something else," Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said. - The remarks were the strongest rejection by Saudi Arabia -- which was a launchpad for the U.S.-led 1991 Gulf War that drove Iraqi troops out of Kuwait after a seven-month occupation -- of any assistance to a possible U.S. attack on Iraq. The rejection comes in the midst of strained relations between the strategic allies over last year's Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, in which 15 of the 19 men believed to be the suicide attackers were Saudis, and Saudi anger at what it sees as U.S. bias toward Israel in the Middle East conflict.

Army's secret 'people zapper' plans - Britain has been involved in secret talks with the United States over the development of so-called non-lethal weapons, including lasers that blind the enemy and microwave systems that cook the skin of human targets. The Observer has established that British and US military leaders met at the Ministry of Defence HQ in London to discuss the operational benefits of such technology when used as a 'persuasive tool' against people from enemy regimes. - The disclosures prompted demands last night from opposition politicians for a full statement on Britain's involvement in developing such weapons. Opposition MPs and campaigners believe the fact that the military is considering developing and using these weapons in war or as a tool to threaten other states breaches a number of international arms and humanitarian treaties.

US plans to ditch industry rivals and force end of Opec, write Peter Beaumont and Faisal Islam. Comment from reader: I mean, how shameless and barefaced can you get? I am flabberghasted.. and this quote "Larry Lindsey, President Bush's economic adviser, recently said that a successful war on Iraq would be good for business." Seems like it's got to the stage where the US and other governments are no longer trying to hide that they will simply do what they like and to hell with voters and what the public thinks. Of course in reality that has been the way of things for a long time but no when many people are realising it and objecting in classic bully style, the government's response is "and what are YOU gonna DO about it?"

US in denial as poverty rises - While President Bush's windfall tax breaks to the super-rich breezed through Congress (with Democratic help), the proposed rise in the minimum wage is frozen. The proportion of children without health cover has increased from 63.8 per cent to 67.1 per cent. The poverty rate for children in the US is worse than in 19 'rich' countries, according to a study by the University of Michigan. Income statistics showed the first significant decline in average income among blacks in two decades; the white average also fell, and only Hispanics maintained their level. · One in 11 families, one in nine Americans, and one in six children are officially poor. · The most affluent fifth of the population received half of all household income last year. The poorest fifth got 3.5 per cent. · The official poverty line is an income of $18,104 pa (£11,570) for a family of four. A single parent of two working full-time for a minimum wage would make $10,712 (£6,846). · 40 per cent of homeless men are veterans. · Up to a fifth of America's food, worth $31bn, goes to waste each year, with 130lb of food per person ending up in landfills.

A 68-year-old woman from Bolton, Greater Manchester, was beaten by Jewish settlers until she fell to the ground and told: "Next time, you'll get a bullet." Up here, amid the crumbling limestone houses and rolling hills, Palestinian villagers are being attacked almost daily every time they try to harvest their olives. - Similar attacks have been going on in other villages. In Yanun, the Palestinians lost the battle. Unable to take any more, they packed up and left. That, says Daniel Milo, an Israeli peace activist, was what the aggressors wanted: the settlers want all the land here and Yanun is in the way. "The settlements are a cancer, and these are the metastasis [spread]," as Mr Milo put it. Comment: I hate to say it, but the Jews are shooting themselves in the foot over and over again. Anti-Semitism is on the rise, and they have no one to blame but themselves and their Fascist God, Jehovah.

Three months into an exhaustive investigation of persistent reports dating to 1995 that there exists an incriminating videotape of current Republican Presidential front-runner Bush caught in a hastily-aborted DEA cocaine sting, the central allegation remains unproven. - But some startling details have been confirmed, amid a raft of new suspicions emerging from conflicting FAA records. Those records, along with other irrefutable documents, point to the existence of far more than mere happenstance or dark "conspiracy theorist speculations" in the matter of how George W. Bush came to be flying the friendly Texas skies in an airplane that was a crown jewel in the drug smuggling fleet of the notorious Barry Seal. Those documents reveal - beyond any doubt - that in the 1980s Barry Seal, with whom the CIA has consistently denied any relationship, piloted and controlled airplanes owned by the same Phoenix Arizona company, Greycas, which in a 1998 bankruptcy filing, was revealed to have been a subsidiary of the same company that owned the now defunct CIA proprietary airline Southern Air Transport.

The discovery in central Italy of a 7,800-year-old settlement reveals the dawning of Western civilization

Two unlikely suspects have been selected to play the roles of the feared DC snipers: John Allen Muhammad, commonly described as a 41-year-old 'drifter,' though until fairly recently he had spent his entire adult life in the military; and a 17-year-old Jamaican immigrant named Lee Boyd Malvo (also identified as Lee Byron Malvo and John Lee Malvo), who entered the country illegally several years ago.

America's Joseph Goebbels: Karl Rove - As a 21-year old Young Republican in Texas, Karl Rove not only pimped for Richard Nixon's chief political dirty tricks strategist Donald Segretti but soon caught the eye of the incoming Republican National Committee Chairman, George H. W. Bush. Rove's dirty tricks on behalf of Nixon's 1972 campaign catapulted Rove onto the national stage. From his Eagle's Nest in the West Wing of the White House, Rove now directs a formidable political dirty tricks operation and disinformation mill. - Rove's penchant for fascistic demagoguery and outright lying continues to this very day. After Paul Wellstone's sons asked that Vice President Dick Cheney not attend the Minneapolis memorial service for their father, mother, and sister, the White House explained that the real reason wasn't the surviving Wellstone family's abhorrence for Cheney but the fact the family didn't want Cheney's Secret Service protection to interfere with public access to the service. Of course, the Rove and Ari Fleischer disinformation machine forgot to take into account that two attendees, Bill and Hillary Clinton, had their own Secret Service details. But such is the case with a White House that takes its lessons from Goebbels and the editorial staff of the old Soviet News Agency Tass.

Pappy Bush on Paul Wellstone: "Who Is This Chickenshit?" - Before we all get sucked into George W. Bush's eulogies of the late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone let us not forget what his father, Bush 41, called the Senator at a White House reception for newly-elected members of Congress in 1991. - So when Wellstone met Bush in a typical White House pro forma reception line, he used the occasion to urge Bush on three different occasions to spend more time on issues like education and cautioning him against the Persian Gulf War. Of course, Bush was more concerned about fighting the war against Iraq (sound familiar?) and could care less about Wellstone's issues. After Wellstone violated Bush 41's sanctimonious White House protocol, Bush was overheard saying, "Who is this chicken shit?" - Now after Senator Wellstone was tragically killed in a plane crash and "General" Karl Rove is obviously busy trying to figure out how the tragedy can benefit the GOP's chances of winning control of the Senate, I think it's time to answer old man Bush's question. Far from being a chicken shit, Wellstone actually cared for people, unlike your pathetic son who could not even find a few minutes to attend one or two funerals of his Washington, DC area neighbors who were tragically shot and killed by a couple of snipers. No, Mr. Bush 41, Paul Wellstone was not a chicken shit, that epitaph is better reserved for you and your moronic son.

The Campaign of Lies Bush Runs the Most Dishonest Campaign in Modern Florida History - Definition of “lie” from dictionary.com: 1. A false statement deliberately presented as being true; a falsehood. 2. Something meant to deceive or give a wrong impression. - “Normally, the word ‘lie' should be used sparingly, if at all, in political discourse,” McBride communications director Alan Stonecipher said today. “But in this campaign, no other word suffices to describe Bush’s near-total disregard of the truth,” he said. “Jeb Bush is running the most dishonest political campaign in modern Florida history,” Stonecipher said. “He’s willing to say and do almost anything to be re-elected.” Comment: Not a surprise... considering the family of PSYCHOPATHS that Jebbie comes from... Ya'll get out and VOTE!!!

One of Canada's most celebrated authors, Rohinton Mistry, has cancelled his U.S. book tour, saying he's fed up with the way he is treated at American airports. - ...as a person of colour, Mistry was stopped repeatedly and rudely at U.S. airports on his tour.

This site gives a summary of the facts available at this time via the media, surrounding Senator Paul Wellstone's airplane crash of 10-25-02. Judge for yourself, was this more likely an assassination or an accident?

The government is seeking public input before it decides whether to let a few dozen toddlers and preschoolers be vaccinated against smallpox, a study to test the best children's vaccine dose but one raising thorny questions about safety and ethics. - After research oversight boards reached mixed conclusions on these issues, the Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday that for the next month it will accept public comment on whether the University of California, Los Angeles, and Cincinnati Children's Hospital should inoculate 40 2- to 5-year-olds with smallpox vaccine. They would be the first children to get the shots since routine vaccination ended in 1972. It's highly unusual for the FDA to seek public opinion on research.- It's a difficult decision because of the vaccine's risks. Based on studies from the 1960s, 15 of every 1 million people vaccinated will suffer life-threatening reactions, and one or two of them will die. A vaccinated person can spread the vaccine's virus by touching the injection site, then touching the eyes, mouth or someone else. If the virus spread to the eye, for instance, it could cause blindness. Someone with a weak immune system, such as an AIDS patient, could be killed. Comment: Okay... they asked for it, let's give them an earful!!!

Killer flu 'on the way' - Experts say governments across Europe need to plan for a virulent flu outbreak that could claim hundreds of thousands of lives. - This "superflu" is caused by an influenza virus, but its fatality rate is more reminiscent of lethal haemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola. Previous versions, including the Spanish flu, had mutated into a form which the human immune system could not tackle. It is possible that, at any time, the virus could mutate again and produce a strain that could share many of these lethal genetic characteristics. Comment: Well, we see them cranking us up for it. C's already said it was coming... The only thing that might, possibly, stop all of this nonsense, is for more people to wake up and take action to clean house in the halls of government.

When is a Terrorist not a Terrorist? Answer: When he's Killing Russians - The Chechen Islamist terrorists are among the world's most vicious, and that's not hyperbole. They're famous for putting people in basement dungeons and killing them slowly. They're the folks who took over a Russian hospital a few years back and slaughtered the patients. But when they seized a Moscow theater a week ago, Western TV networks avoided that ugly word, 'terrorist.' Moreover, as Mr. Litvinovich notes in his article ..., it wasn't only Western news stations that developed linguistic reticence. For example, here are Secretary of State Colin Powell's comments on the Moscow theater attack: [Oct. 23 News Conference] "QUESTION: Mr. Secretary, have you heard anything from Moscow on the situation there in the theater? POWELL: No, I have not, I've been following our reports from the State Department Operations Center, but I'm sure I'll learn more in the course of the evening. It's a *tragic situation*, it shows us once again the kind of world we're living in where innocent people can be *put at this kind of risk* and *I hope the Russian authorities* will be able to resolve this peacefully without any loss of life." - A "tragic situation." "People...put at...risk." Note that there is nothing here about the war on terror or giving terrorists no safe harbor or the rest of the Bush administration rhetoric when the victim is Russia.

New Energy Source "Wrings" Power from Black Hole Spin - Scientists for the first time have seen energy being extracted from a black hole. Like an electric dynamo, this black hole spins and pumps energy out through cable-like magnetic field lines into the chaotic gas whipping around it, making the gas -- already infernally hot from the sheer force of crushing gravity -- even hotter.

More Surveillance on the Way - While the Patriot Act granted exemptions specifically to law enforcement operatives, the new rules would allow communications providers to turn over records to any government agency. While it's at least conceivable that the Centers for Disease Control might have a valid need for your records, the way the bill is worded, your local city council would have the same standing. Other provisions change computer wiretap laws to allow more emergency tapping and create mandatory sentencing guidelines in cases when someone uses a computer in the commissions of a crime, as if this was somehow comparable to using a gun to facilitate a criminal transgression. How did these provisions get added to the Senate's contentious homeland security bill by unanimous consent? Hoofnagle explains that the bill makes most of these changes by reference-substituting one word here and another there in an existing law.
