Of course, Israel will try to install a puppet regime in Gaza by empowering compliant Palestinian clans to take control on its behalf. Of course, the United States will support such a move. And of course, that puppet authority will not resist even if Israel begins to establish new settlements in Gaza.
In essence, Israel — backed by the United States — seems intent on creating a “second Palestinian Authority,” replicating in Gaza what it has long done in the West Bank.
In the 2006 Palestinian legislative election, Hamas won a clear victory, but Western nations rejected the outcome and refused to recognize the Hamas-led government.
As a result, Palestine became divided: Gaza, under Hamas, was blockaded, while in the West Bank — under the PLO’s control — Israeli settlement expansion accelerated.
The PLO, having become a client and deeply corrupt, lost the people’s trust, and their disillusionment drove many toward Hamas.
If Trump continues to dominate the process, history will only repeat itself.
The only point of hope compared to those days is that now, many Western countries have formally recognized the State of Palestine and are committed to the principle of two-state solution.
Whether the international community can act wisely — resisting interference from the U.S. and Israel while guiding both sides toward justice — will determine the possibility of lasting peace for both Palestinians and Israelis.
