SCOOP: The New York Times Visual Investigations publishing verified footage and analysis of Israeli white phosphorus use over populated areas in Lebanon.
Documented incidents in Nabatieh (May 30 - city of 40,000), Tyre, Qlayaa, Khiam, and Yohmor. The Times provided the IDF with exact coordinates for four specific incidents and asked for comment.
"The IDF had no comment on those incidents."
The munitions: American-made 155mm M825A1 artillery shells - 116 felt wedges coated with white phosphorus, designed to burst midair and scatter incendiary material over a wide area.
White phosphorus spontaneously ignites on air contact, is exceptionally difficult to extinguish, causes burns that penetrate to the bone, and can reignite when bandages are removed as remnants are re-exposed to oxygen.
The Lebanese government has filed four formal letters to the UN since October 2023 documenting over 600 fires caused by white phosphorus in southern Lebanon.
Ahmad Beydoun, an independent researcher who built a visual database: Israel used white phosphorus more than 200 times in Lebanon in the year following October 7, 2023.
