SOTT Focus: The Health & Wellness Show: Lightening up: The Benefits of Photobiomodulation

photobiomodulation
The use of light therapy has a long history and was considered cutting edge treatment for a variety of infectious diseases, skin disorders and wounds in the late 1800's and early to mid-1900's but was shunted aside with the invention of antibiotics and the rise of Big Pharma. Now, light therapy is making a comeback and there are hundreds of research articles on the therapeutic benefits of red, near-infrared, green and, sometimes even blue, light. Photobiomodulation has shown promising results in the treatment of a wide array of disorders from chronic pain to Alzheimer's disease to acne and more.

Join us on this episode of The Health and Wellness Show where we'll discuss the science behind why light is so effective, what happens to your body when exposed to certain wavelengths and how to incorporate light therapy into your life in the comfort of your own home.

SOTT Focus: Behind the Headlines: The Fall of Western Society and American Isolationism

russia sanctions
© New Eastern Outlook
Western society is apparently in trouble. 'Left'- and 'Right'-wing ideologies are resorting to increasingly extreme positions and isolating large groups of people from each other.

Meanwhile, a similar parting of the ways seems to be happening at the level of 'international order'. In just one week, the US has increased sanctions on Iran, tabled a new package of sanctions against Russia and North Korea, and slapped sanctions on Venezuela. From positioning itself as the global arbiter of 'just wars' in the aftermath of 9/11, the US is today self-declared as the global arbiter of economic trade.

With sanctions the US government believes it can isolate Russia and other regimes it doesn't like, and thus 'hold the center'. But is it in fact only isolating itself and further polarizing opinion and society inside the USA?

Join us on Behind the Headlines today, from 12-2pm EST (4-6pm UTC, 6-8pm CET), for our discussion of the week's news in context.

SOTT Focus: Of Flash Frozen Mammoths and Cosmic Catastrophes

For years I've been fascinated by what could be considered as one of the greatest mysteries of our planet: the demise of the woolly mammoths. Try to imagine the barely imaginable: millions of giant mammoths inexplicably flash-frozen overnight.

This is a fascinating event for several reasons. First, flash-freezing is a very peculiar process that does not really occur on our planet. Also, given the death circumstances, the magnitude and power involved to virtually wipe out the whole mammoth genus is truly astounding.

Mammoth painting in Rouffignac cave
But maybe the most fascinating aspect of this event is that it occurred just 13,000 years ago when the human race was already widely established on planet Earth. For comparison, the upper paleolithic cave paintings found in Southern France (Lascaux, Niaux, Rouffignac,...) were made 17,000 to 13,000 years ago.

This event challenges our uniformitarian vision of history where the progress of life on our planet is a linear process, increasing day after day, undisturbed by any major external setback. Therefore such an event casts a different light on our human condition and the pervasive delusion that human beings are some kind of all-mighty creatures that are above natural laws, including those that govern major catastrophes.

It is a fascinating and puzzling topic because the numerous theories that have been proposed over the last two centuries to explain the demise of the woolly mammoths - such as them being caught in frozen rivers, victims of over-hunting, covered by hail storms, buried in mudslides, fallen in ice crevasses, caught by the ice age - are not sufficient to fully explain this mass extinction.

So, in the following article, I will try to provide explanations about how and why millions of woolly mammoths ended up flash-frozen overnight.

SOTT Focus: The Truth Perspective: Explaining Postmodernism - Interview with Stephen Hicks

Explaining postmodernism
This week we're interviewing Professor Stephen Hicks. Stephen is a Canadian-American philosopher who teaches at Rockford University, where he also directs the Center for Ethics and Entrepreneurship. He is the author of two books: Explaining Postmodernism: Skepticism and Socialism from Rousseau to Foucault argues that postmodernism is best understood as a rhetorical strategy of intellectuals and academics on the far left of the political spectrum developed in reaction to the failure of socialism and communism and Nietzsche and the Nazis, an examination of the ideological and philosophical roots of National Socialism, particularly how Nietzsche's ideas were used, and in some cases misused, by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis to justify their beliefs and practices.

Stephen maintains a personal website at stephenhicks.org

Join us live from 12pm EST (6pm CEST) for what promises to be a very interesting discussion.

SOTT Focus: The Health & Wellness Show: Connecting The Dots - Big Food, Big Pharma and Big Disease

low fat saturated fat
On this episode of the Health and Wellness show we will Connect the Dots in health news over the last couple of months. Big food is back in the news with their ridiculous recommendations about 'healthy dietary fats'. The Presidential advisory panel sponsored by the American Heart Association has once again displayed their blatant conflicts of interest, cherry picked data and misguided science when it come to recommendations for a 'healthy diet'. Big food profits drive the funding, publication and discussion of organizations like the AHA while researchers, authors, cardiologists and consumers are left wondering what is going on?

We cannot address Big Food without looking at the connections between Big Pharma and Big Disease. If 'food is information' as science has been suggesting how does lifestyle, diet and environmental factors contribute to our overall health? Join us for yet another lively discussion about food, Big Pharma drugs and the growing epidemic of disease.

As always added in the mix is Zoya's pet health segment!

Over the last few years an increasing number of publications have absolved saturated fat from being implicated in cardiovascular disease. I've lost count of how many studies I've read on this subject, but perhaps the most straightforward recent paper was written by Gerhard Spiteller of the University of Bayreuth (Germany) and Mohammad Afzal of the Biological Sciences department of Kuwait University.

Spiteller has a PhD in organic chemistry, a basic science, knowledge of which is a fundamental prerequisite for entering any medical school. In a most fascinating study, Spiteller shows why a basic understanding of organic chemistry explains why the Lipid Hypothesis - where a high intake of saturated fat and elevated LDL ("bad") cholesterol are the most important causes of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease - doesn't make sense from a chemical point of view. In other words, if doctors and nutritionists would only apply their basic training in organic chemistry, they would be embarrassed to support the cholesterol myth.

SOTT Focus: Australia - Goodbye Internet Privacy, Hello Police State

Five eyes
It hasn't been a Good News Week over the last seven days in Australia. You all remember us, right? We may be on the other side of the world, way down under, and not very significant politically, but as a vassal of the American empire, what happens down here is usually pretty indicative of what's happening in the rest of the "international community". So let's see what this latest week had in store for us.

On Friday morning, the 14th of July, the prime minister of the 'Lucky Country' informed the multiverse that math was no longer relevant in Australia. Here's the quote:
Malcolm Turnbull: "Well the laws of Australia prevail in Australia I can assure you of that. The laws of mathematics are very commendable, but the only law that applies in Australia is the law of Australia.
Apparently, laws written by politicians and enforced by judges and juries, can somehow overrule basic mathematical concepts such as "1+1=2", proven in the early 20th century and documented in the Principia Mathematica by Whitehead & Russell, and intuitively known by humans for millennia if not longer. Clearly, Malcolm Turnbull has joined the neocon "reality creator" club, where a person can just "act" and the rest of us can then "judiciously" study the 'reality' they just supposedly created. The laws of government trump those that govern reality. Obviously.
