SOTT Focus: The Health & Wellness Show: More Than Meets the Eye: Interview with Optometrist Reshma Seth

iriscan
It's said that the eyes are the windows to the soul. And truly, the eyes can communicate a great deal - emotional state, intention, health, attention - we can tell a lot about a person by looking them in the eye. But unless something has gone wrong, we don't tend to think much about our eyes. What should we be doing to maintain the health of our eyes? Are the supplements said to be good for the eyes actually any good? Are glasses good for the eyes? What about contact lenses? Is it possible to correct vision without lenses? Why do some people need glasses and some maintain perfect vision all their lives? How does staring at digital screens affect our eyes?

Join us on this episode of the Health and Wellness Show as we interview Optometrist Reshma Seth, B.Optom (Hons), and we'll explore the many facets of ocular health.

And stay tuned for Zoya's Pet Health Segment, where she explains how animals see in the dark.

SOTT Focus: Rambouillet ruse? Why Trump could be setting up his North Korea talks to fail

trump kim korea
President Trump has set the bar of success so high for his forthcoming meeting with Kim Jong-un, it is difficult to see how it could possibly be met.

As the New York Times noted last month, "To meet his own definition of success, Mr. Trump will have to persuade Mr. Kim to accept 'complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization' of North Korea - something that Mr. Kim has shown no willingness to accept in the past, and few believe he will accede to in the future."

Such denuclearization would involve "the actual dismantlement of weapons, the removal of stockpiled uranium and plutonium bomb fuel from the country and a verification program that will be one of the most complex in history, given the vastness of North Korea's mountains." Furthermore, Trump has suggested that the North Koreans will gain nothing in return for this one-sided destruction of their defenses, until the process is all-but-complete; as one Trump official told the Wall Street Journal, "When the president says that he will not make the mistakes of the past, that means the U.S. will not be making substantial concessions, such as lifting sanctions, until North Korea has substantially dismantled its nuclear programs".

In other words - give up your leverage first; then we'll see. What Trump appears to seek is nothing less than a completely disarmed Korea that will pave the way for the "Libya solution" his people have openly suggested is the goal.

SOTT Focus: The Death of Razan al-Najjar and Israel's Culture of Impunity

Razan al-Najjar
As Palestinians mourn the death of 21-year-old medic, Razan al-Najjar, Israel continues its bombardment of the Gaza Strip

Razan was a 21-year-old from Khuzaa, a small Palestinian village located near Khan Yhunis in the southern Gaza Strip. On June 1st she was shot through the heart by an IDF sniper as she tended to others shot by IDF snipers at the marathon protests held along the Gaza concentration camp perimeter fence since late March. Her story - and thus the story of what is happening there in Gaza - has received negligible coverage in the Western media. And when it is covered, it is covered only sentimentally, without any real context.

In July 2014, Israel initiated another barbaric onslaught on the Gaza strip. Justified by the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teens, a gag order was placed on the media in order to prevent them from detailing the boys' fate while the IDF initiated a massive campaign of terror on the Palestinian people, and religious leaders whipped Israeli public opinion into a frenzy for blood.

SOTT Focus: George Galloway: The NATO virus is spreading

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg
© Francois Lenoir / ReutersNATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg poses next to a world map, Brussels, Belgium, May 7, 2018
Like a geographical virus the spread of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has broken all natural boundaries. It is immune to any antibiotic of logic and poses a deadly threat to the health, peace and stability of the world.

For decades in the West, NATO was believed to have been a defensive response to the creation of the Warsaw Pact - despite the fact that it was formed long before the treaty, which has in turn been nearly 30 years dead. Nonetheless, like death and taxes, membership of NATO has been assumed to be one of life's few certainties with an increasing share of national wealth going to pay for it.

This might have gone on unquestioned but for the multiple East-West crises of the last few years and the bizarre inclusion of, brothers-in-arms and non-North Atlantic states, Colombia and Israel in recent NATO activity.

SOTT Focus: Keto Kontroversy: Australian Medical Assn. Puts Pressure on Netflix to Remove 'The Magic Pill' Paleo-Keto Documentary

netlix documentary magic pill
Oooh, controversy is afoot down under in Australia, where celebrity chef Pete Evans is taking criticism for a documentary he co-produced and narrates, called 'The Magic Pill', extolling the virtues of the paleo-ketogenic diet. Cuz the good lord knows nothing ignites the public more than a good old fashioned argument about food! As the great Spam debates at the turn of the century or the Pepsi challenge disceptation of the 1980s show, human beings love fighting over what everyone else should be eating. It seems we're simply not happy unless everyone is eating what we say is right for them to eat. Or maybe we're just happy fighting about it.

The current controversy erupted when Australian Medical Association (AMA) president Dr. Tony Bartone publicly stated that Netflix Australia, which is currently streaming the documentary, should "do the responsible thing" by removing the film from its programming. From Buzzfeed:
"People out there are vulnerable to the messaging," Bartone told The Sydney Morning Herald, explaining that decades of research currently existed to back up the healthy eating guidelines.

"I respect Pete Evans' ability and expertise in the kitchen, but that's where it begins and ends."
The film was released in 2017, and then president of the AMA Michael Gannon tweeted his nomination for the film to the Flakeys "annual awards for the Film/TV least likely to contribute to the #publichealth #prevention". He also compared it to 'Vaxxed' (which should be taken as a compliment by anyone with two firing neurons). Pete Evans has been engaged in a social media verbal war ever since, posting from his popular Instagram and Facebook accounts, accusing these doctors and journalists of having ulterior motives in trying to maintain the status quo in dietary advice in the public sphere (because crying conspiracy always goes over well with the public).

SOTT Focus: If Russia Isn't Fit to Host The World Cup, Who is?

russia world cup
With the 2018 World Cup in Russia fast approaching, excitement over the prospect of feasting on another quadrennial festival of football, this beautiful game that captivates like no other, is not being felt by some - specifically Western liberal commentators and politicians for whom the mere mention of the word 'Russia' brings them out in spots.

For example, the BBC television show, The Big Questions, is a Sunday lunchtime staple for a UK audience made up of people interested in the burning moral issues of the day. Week in week out it debates questions and issues surrounding religion, abortion, criminal justice, minority rights, immigration, and so on. Host, Nicky Campbell, is never less than professional in skilfully navigating these difficult and divisive issues, ensuring that all views are given a fair hearing during the course of the debate.

In a recent episode the three questions asked were: 'Is it ethical to take part in the World Cup?' - 'Should you be able to self-declare your gender?' - and, 'Can the British High Street be saved?' Now some might think that those questions would have been more relevant if they'd been framed thus: Is the self-declaration of gender an example of identity politics gone mad? Is the British High Street worth saving? And, if Russia's isn't fit to host the World Cup, who is?

But, regardless, that's another story.

SOTT Focus: Chinese Ambassador Sets The Record Straight: China is Not a Threat to Canada

aecon group china
The time for pleasantries and diplomatic decorum has come to an end. In a candid May 31, 2018 editorial published in the Globe and Mail entitled 'China is Not a Threat to Canada', Chinese Ambassador to Canada Lu Shaye made it clear that a destructively toxic environment has been created by the mainstream media and political class alike towards China, which must now come to an end. Although the Chinese are known for their nearly superhuman patience when dealing with basketcase nations of the TransAtlantic region, the state of anti-Sino hysteria now prevalent across Canada has simply gone too far.

The straw that broke the camel's back was the May 23rd intervention launched by the Canadian government into a strategically important purchase of a failing Canadian construction giant named Aecon Inc. As the buy-out - two years in the making - was on the verge of being finalized, a National Security Review conducted by the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development concluded that China's ownership of Aecon would be detrimental to Canada by allowing a foreign government access to sensitive military and nuclear technology knowledge that could undermine Canada's safety.

The Ministry justified its decision in the following terms:
"Based on their findings, in order to protect national security, we ordered CCCC not to implement the proposed investment... Our government is open to international investment that creates jobs and increases prosperity, but not at the expense of national security."
Instead of recognizing in China a trusted partner and ally that offers Canada a fresh approach to economic development and cooperation not seen in our country in over 50 years, the majority of the population has been led by evidence-free arguments to see in China only a shifty totalitarian state, abusive towards its own people, hungry to steal technological secrets, desirous of undermining the stability of the "free world" and intent on replacing the USA as a new unipolar world empire.

SOTT Focus: Trump's Outrageous New Trade Policies - Is There a Method to His Madness?

Donald J. Trump
© Michael Reynolds / Global Look PressUS President Donald J. Trump, 08 March 2018.
It would be an understatement to suggest that Trump's decision to slap higher tariffs on practically everybody - has outraged almost everyone: most of the business community, foreign governments, media and experts from all fields.

President Donald Trump, it is said, is unleashing a global trade war, which is already beginning with promised retaliatory measures from our closest trading partners. Trump justified his action by claiming that steel and aluminum are strategic materials essential for national defense. In all likelihood national defense had little to do with his action. Rather, it is a ploy to put a "national security" halo around a measure being taken for economic reasons.

That doesn't mean it's the wrong move, however. It's important to put these measures into the context of long-term US trade policy. US trade policy since World War II could almost have been designed to undermine the economic interests of American workers and American producers. Starting with Germany and Japan, our defeated enemies, we offered them the proverbial deal they can't refuse: they get virtually tariff-free, nonreciprocal access to our huge domestic market to assist with their economies' recovery from wartime destruction; in return, we would take their sovereignty: control of their foreign and security policies, as well as their military and intelligence establishments, plus permanent bases on their territory.

Comment: For an in-depth discussion of the new trade wars, as well as their implications, tune in to this recent Behind the Headlines show:

SOTT Focus: The Age of Metabolic Syndrome - Inflammatory Fat Is Worse Than Obesity

abdominal fat

A global survey in 2016 said the ratio of obese adults had more than doubled in the 40 years since 1975. Of about five billion adults alive in 2014, 641 million were obese. Despite efforts from government agencies and the population at large, the upwards trend seem set to continue.

According to research presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Vienna on May 23rd 2018, 22 percent of people in the world will be obese by 2045, up from 14 percent last year. One in eight people, up from one in 11, will have type 2 diabetes. In the United States, the researchers found obesity will increase from 39 percent of the population in 2017 to 55 percent in 2045, and diabetes from 14 percent to 18 percent. In Britain, the proportion will swell from 32 percent to 48 percent, with the incidence of diabetes rising from 10.2 percent to 12.6 percent.

A team of researchers obtained these from a World Health Organization database with population data for all countries in the world. They divided the population of each country into age groups and further into body mass index (BMI) categories, looking at trends to make projections.

BMI is a ratio of height to weight used to divide people into low- to high-risk categories for developing heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. A person with a BMI of 25 or more is considered overweight, and 30 or higher obese. A healthy BMI ranges from 18.5 to 24.9.

However, contrary to popular belief and its very definition, BMI doesn't detect people who are at most risk for developing cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases such as diabetes. This is why doctors have guidelines that ignore BMI. In this article we'll learn why and the implications.

SOTT Focus: Eyewitness in Douma: Syrian Civilians from Ground Zero Expose Chemical Weapons Hoax

douma residents duma chemical attack
© Eva BartlettResidents of Douma, after being interviewed by Eva Bartlett on April 29, 2018.
Western media keeps referring to an alleged chemical attack on Douma, Syria, as an established fact, but have yet to produce one iota of evidence from the town that, until recently, was controlled by Jaysh al-Islam.

Unverified videos, emanating from the Western-funded propaganda construct the White Helmets, do not constitute evidence, nor do testimonies taken in Turkey or Idlib, Syria, which is under terrorist rule.

On the other hand, there are many testimonies that contradict the accusations, including those of 17 Syrians from Douma (among them doctors and medical staff), who, on April 26, spoke at the headquarters of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in the Hague, stating that there was no chemical attack.

Comment: That chemical weapons were present in Douma is without question. Who they belonged to and who was supplying the manufacturing materials is another matter
