Australia: It came from the sky

Marcus Johnson took this photograph... UFO or lens flare?

Marcus Johnson, 39, took this photo of a chopper at the Truscott airstrip in northeast Western Australia, just over the NT border, last week.

On closer inspection he discovered a strange object could be seen flying through the air behind the helicopter.

Mr Johnson, a pilot from Yamba in New South Wales, said he had no idea what the strange lights were.

"It's pretty extraordinary, looking at it,'' he said.

UK: Orange UFOs puzzle Brum

Were they planes or hot-air balloons - or something else? No-one seems to know what was hovering menacingly above the skies of Birmingham.

Many people, including paramedics and police officers, reported sightings of spherical, orange mystery objects flying over Moseley and Kings Heath.

Wayne Dale, an engineer from Hawkhurst Road, Maypole, was walking with a friend when he saw unusual objects moving erratically across the sky.

Comment: There were quite a surge of orange lights seen in the skies over the UK around July 28th and 29th. You can read about some of them here, here and here.

US: 60th anniversary of pilots' close encounter

It was 60 years ago Thursday that two well-respected commercial pilots found themselves on a collision course with a torpedo-shaped unidentified flying object. And that extraordinary encounter would influence the Air Force's early investigation of the whole UFO phenomenon.

During the early morning hours of July 24, 1948, pilot Clarence Chiles and co-pilot John Whitted were flying an Eastern Airlines Douglas DC-3 over the city of Montgomery, Ala. Their airliner was cruising at an altitude of about 5,000 feet and the nighttime flight was pretty much uneventful.

But at about 2:45 a.m., Chiles spotted a hazy red cloud, which looked like aircraft exhaust. It was slightly above them and to the front of the DC-3 by about half a mile. Chiles next saw some kind of aircraft and suspected that it was one of the new jet planes being used by the Army. However, the two pilots quickly realized that this object was not a jet plane and it was coming right at them very fast. The strange object barely missed the DC-3 and passed by them on their starboard side at a distance of about 1,000 feet, according to Chiles's report.

UK: Gran sights UFO over New Forest

A Hampshire camper claims to have spotted a UFO that was travelling "faster than a plane" over the New Forest.

Grandmother Jasmine Percy was packing up her tent to leave Ashurst campsite when she spotted an orange oval disc shaped object that appeared to be on fire.

Australian UFO sightings surge

This year could set a record for UFO sightings across Australia as the new X-Files movie sparks renewed interest in extra terrestrial lifeforms. That's according to Diane Harrison, national director of the Australian UFO Research Network, which has recorded more than 50 apparent UFO visits across the country in the past fortnight.

"We usually only get between 10 and 20 reports a week," she told couriermail.com.au.

The release of the X-Files film I Want to Believe is being credited with encouraging the recent surge in UFO reports - which is all the more remarkable as sightings usually dip in the winter months as people spend less time out of doors.

Eyes on the sky: UFOs are real, whether the government admits it or not

The most recent UFO survey of Americans found that about 42 million of us have seen something in the sky that we couldn't identify. UFO researchers generally believe that about 90 percent of sightings can be attributed to natural causes such as meteorites, planets, birds, aircraft, satellites, or the moon shining through clouds. However, the remaining 10 percent of reports cannot be so easily explained away. The most intriguing reports often include close-encounter events (within 500 feet) with multiple witnesses who often are highly respected members of the community, such as police officers and pilots.

By UFOs I mean "flying saucers" or alien crafts.

Canada probes mysterious Arctic blast

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories - Reports of a large, smoky explosion that allegedly killed several whales in Canadian Arctic waters is being investigated by the military.

The mystery began July 31 when Inuit hunters at the top of Baffin Island reported the blast, followed by a cloud of black smoke and several dead beached whales, the Canwest News Service reported. Soon after, a member of the aboriginal military reservist Canadian Rangers made a similar report.

The Defense Department said none of its vessels were in the area, although cruise ships, cargo ships and supply vessels use the waters between July and September, the report said.

US: Couple claim mysterious noise plagues their house

Green Bay, Wisconsin - Bob and Leona Ehrfurth say the noise that's been plaguing them for two years sounds something like a rumbling motor, with a subtle vibration that won't quit. Then it stops - especially when they try to show city officials or acoustic experts what they're hearing.

It's enough to keep 76-year-old Leona from sleeping.

"It's like there's a semi parked right outside with the engine running, but when you look out, there isn't one," she said.

She and her husband, who is 75, have lived in the same house for 42 years. The problem only developed over the last two years.

Indiana UFO Invasion

UFOs being chased by military jets has become a common theme in the USA over the past year. In all of these cases the jets almost immediately dropped flares to cover up what was, obviously, a far more interesting mission. If any comments were forthcoming from the military, they merely stated that any military aircraft seen in the area were on training missions.

When most people think of UFOs being chased by jets, they think of the Stephenville and Erath County, Texas, events that took place in January of 2008. In that case, recently released FAA radar reports show that unidentified objects were tracked along with military jets and that at least one may have violated presidential airspace over the Bush Ranch in Crawford, Texas. However, incidents like that one have taken place on numerous occasions in Indiana as well.

Brit's UFO sightings reach 150 this year

Britons have spotted a whopping 150 UFOs this year, according to figures.

Reported 'alien' sightings are at their highest level for years - with authorities now hearing about four mysterious objects in Britain's skies every week.

So far this year 150 apparent 'flying saucers' have been reported to police, military bases and the Ministry of Defence, compared to just 135 for the whole of 2007, and 97 the year before.
