Dave Dietz points out one of the photographs on his computer of the UFO he witnessed and took pictures of outside his Thomasville home last week.

Dave Dietz of Thomasville saw something in the night sky last week, and he's still not sure what.

Dietz isn't some kind of nut. He doesn't have posters of UFOs in his office. He doesn't believe Bigfoot is stalking the woods beyond his Jackson Township home. He doesn't believe in paranormal nonsense.

He's a scientist by trade, an environmental geologist. By avocation, he's an amateur astronomer. His office bookshelves contain tomes about geology and astronomy. There's not an "I want to believe" poster in sight.

The search for Bigfoot is over, according to two US hunters who say they have found the body of the hairy ape-like creature and will back their claims up at a press conference tomorrow.

Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer say they discovered the body in a forest in northern Georgia, a south-east US state, about two weeks ago.

The pair, who reportedly operate a Bigfoot tracking business, will present "DNA evidence and photo evidence of the creature" at a press conference in California tomorrow.

Australia: It came from the sky

Marcus Johnson took this photograph... UFO or lens flare?

Marcus Johnson, 39, took this photo of a chopper at the Truscott airstrip in northeast Western Australia, just over the NT border, last week.

On closer inspection he discovered a strange object could be seen flying through the air behind the helicopter.

Mr Johnson, a pilot from Yamba in New South Wales, said he had no idea what the strange lights were.

"It's pretty extraordinary, looking at it,'' he said.

UK: Orange UFOs puzzle Brum

Were they planes or hot-air balloons - or something else? No-one seems to know what was hovering menacingly above the skies of Birmingham.

Many people, including paramedics and police officers, reported sightings of spherical, orange mystery objects flying over Moseley and Kings Heath.

Wayne Dale, an engineer from Hawkhurst Road, Maypole, was walking with a friend when he saw unusual objects moving erratically across the sky.

Comment: There were quite a surge of orange lights seen in the skies over the UK around July 28th and 29th. You can read about some of them here, here and here.

US: 60th anniversary of pilots' close encounter

It was 60 years ago Thursday that two well-respected commercial pilots found themselves on a collision course with a torpedo-shaped unidentified flying object. And that extraordinary encounter would influence the Air Force's early investigation of the whole UFO phenomenon.

During the early morning hours of July 24, 1948, pilot Clarence Chiles and co-pilot John Whitted were flying an Eastern Airlines Douglas DC-3 over the city of Montgomery, Ala. Their airliner was cruising at an altitude of about 5,000 feet and the nighttime flight was pretty much uneventful.

But at about 2:45 a.m., Chiles spotted a hazy red cloud, which looked like aircraft exhaust. It was slightly above them and to the front of the DC-3 by about half a mile. Chiles next saw some kind of aircraft and suspected that it was one of the new jet planes being used by the Army. However, the two pilots quickly realized that this object was not a jet plane and it was coming right at them very fast. The strange object barely missed the DC-3 and passed by them on their starboard side at a distance of about 1,000 feet, according to Chiles's report.

Australian UFO sightings surge

This year could set a record for UFO sightings across Australia as the new X-Files movie sparks renewed interest in extra terrestrial lifeforms. That's according to Diane Harrison, national director of the Australian UFO Research Network, which has recorded more than 50 apparent UFO visits across the country in the past fortnight.

"We usually only get between 10 and 20 reports a week," she told couriermail.com.au.

The release of the X-Files film I Want to Believe is being credited with encouraging the recent surge in UFO reports - which is all the more remarkable as sightings usually dip in the winter months as people spend less time out of doors.

Eyes on the sky: UFOs are real, whether the government admits it or not

The most recent UFO survey of Americans found that about 42 million of us have seen something in the sky that we couldn't identify. UFO researchers generally believe that about 90 percent of sightings can be attributed to natural causes such as meteorites, planets, birds, aircraft, satellites, or the moon shining through clouds. However, the remaining 10 percent of reports cannot be so easily explained away. The most intriguing reports often include close-encounter events (within 500 feet) with multiple witnesses who often are highly respected members of the community, such as police officers and pilots.

By UFOs I mean "flying saucers" or alien crafts.
