A large object with a turquoise hue plummeted out of the sky earlier this summer and plowed into the earth south of Las Vegas near Needles, California.

Eyewitnesses say this was no meteorite, especially since a bunch of helicopters came looking for it and then hauled it away.

Were they planes or hot-air balloons - or something else? No-one seems to know what was hovering menacingly above the skies of Birmingham.

Many people, including paramedics and police officers, reported sightings of spherical, orange mystery objects flying over Moseley and Kings Heath.

A 90-foot crane collapsed into the water at the Titusville Municipal Marina early Monday morning.

Authorities said the crane was on a barge at the marina off U.S. Highway 1 in Brevard County.

The collapse of the crane caused the barge to sink. The crane smashed through a cement beam holding up part of the dock and knocked out the water line that is used for fire protection.

Illinois: Man dies in crane collapse

A crane collapse has killed a 33-year-old man at a construction site in Normal.

McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling says Josh M. Dawe died when the crane collapsed onto the aerial lift in which he worked.

Local authorities say the crane fell about 10:45 Wednesday morning onto the roof of a warehouse under construction in the central Illinois town.

Kimmerling says preliminary evidence shows the boom collapsed on the lift while girders were being set for the roof. She says a cause hasn't been determined.

A number of people called Northamptonshire Police after watching the strange lights, which reportedly moved across the sky, with one of the lights then exploding.

Mysterious coloured lights spotted floating over Sheffield on Saturday night have left residents - and police - puzzled.

Eyewitness reports vary about the strange sightings with some people saying they saw around 10 orange lights in the sky while others spotted up to 100 green lights floating around the Meadowhall area.

John Farley captured this strange object while taking photographs in Devon

As a budding photographer, John Farley is used to capturing some extraordinary scenes and images.

But nothing could prepare him for the shock of a speeding UFO which he caught on camera while taking pictures of a famous British beauty spot.

Mr Farley was snapping away at Berry Head in Brixham, Devon, when he captured the unusual image of sunny Torbay.

But it wasn't until he got home and glanced through the images on his computer that he noticed a mysterious round object in the background.

UFOs are a much loved phenomena for the British public, with barely a week going by without a sighting of a flying saucer hovering over Wembley or Waterloo Bridge.

Online searches for UFOs have increased by 116 per cent from the beginning of May for a two-month period, according to Eva Stringleman, a research analyst with Hitwise UK.

The huge increase ties in with the release of declassified files from the Ministry of Defence, now available to view on the National Archives website.

"I am advising you of the mutilations that occurred in Rosario del Tala approximately between July 12-13. Two cows are involved; the mutilations took place in 2do Cuartel (area) at Rosario del Tala, Entre Rios Province, at "Campito Chanar I" belonging to ASEBEL, S.A. The dead animals were found by the foreman, Mr. Juan Ramon Carballo, 61, and were approximately 30 meters away from each other. The discovery was made last Monday and the event probably occurred on Saturday night. The Aberdeen Angus specimen displayed mutilations to its tongue, ears and cervical tissue; the Black Pampa specimen exhibited a mutilated anus and sexual organs; also missing were the left eye, udders, tongue, left side of the jaw and chin.
