UFO sighting puzzles Newfoundland residents

Residents in Harbour Mille, a tiny community on Newfoundland's south coast, want to know what they saw in the sky Monday night.

Darlene Stewart said she was outside taking pictures of the sunset when she saw something fly overhead.

She snapped a picture of the object in an attempt to zoom in on it to see what it was.

"Even with the camera, I couldn't make it out until I put it on the computer," she told CBC News. "I knew then it wasn't an airplane. It was something different."

Stewart's picture shows a blurry image of what appears to be some kind of missile-like object emitting either flames or heavy smoke.

Rapid technological leaps forward in the last 10 years mean mankind is closer than ever before to knowing whether extra-terrestrial life exists in our galaxy, one of Britain's leading scientists said on Tuesday.

Astronomer and President of the Royal Society (academy of science) Martin Rees said science had made enormous progress in the search for planets grouped around other distant stars -- a discipline he stressed did not exist in the 1990s.

"Now we know that most of the stars, like the sun, are likely to have planetary systems around them and we have every reason to suspect that many of them have planets that are rather like our earth," Rees told Reuters in an interview.

Time: 07.25 am

Witness Statement: I opened my back door and noticed a bright object in the sky with strange lights just sitting there?

It was below the cloud line so it was not a star, and silent so not a plane. It disappeared then came closer again. It sat stationary for around 10 minutes before moving west. The sighting lasted around 15 minutes all together. Hard to judge the size but I would say it was a very large object. 3 other people witnessed this as well.

Time: 11.33pm

Witness Statement: I saw a orange light that seemed to expand into a larger orange object /light then retract itself.

Object was over field at the back of Arndale Centre (or possibly over Alkrington Woods, was difficult to tell from my position)

Object moved up and down, quite low flying, maybe 100 to 150 ft from ground. I watched it for 2 or 3 minutes then it slowly dimmed, moving away over Alkrington Wood area, heading southwards.

Witness Statement: I was having a lazy afternoon and I looked out the window and saw a plane coming out a big fluffy looking cloud, I decided to look at it through some binoculars and after a few seconds I noticed a copper shaded perfectly round UFO coming out of the cloud after the plane! It followed the plane for approx 5-7 seconds then peeled off and went out of view behind the roof of a house up the hill. Luckily my boyfriend was there to see it too.

Witness Statement: I am 25 years old and from North Wales UK,

On the 23rd of January 2010 at roughly 18.30 GMT, My friend and I spotted a very bright spherical object travelling at high speed over West shore, Llandudno, Conwy, North Wales, UK.

The object flew from east to west.

This is a particularly exciting sighting, because at the time we were testing out my new laser pen designed to shoot a green beam strong enough to point out stars (the beam reaches approx 1000ft so it appears to be pointing at a star).

We were stood in the back yard of a friends house. After making sure there were no aircraft to be seen or heard in the area, we shone the laser pen at a few stars (you have to make sure there are no aircraft in the area, especially helicopters as it is very dangerous and ILLEGAL to point this thing in the sky when aircraft are present!).

Witness Statement: I have done some research before I submitted this statement as I felt a little bit confused as to what i saw. Last night at 20.15 I was in the garden having a cigarette with my girlfriend when we saw four red lights traveling very close together in a south easterly direction. Living right next to Gatwick I know this was not a plane or planes and pointed out that they looked so close together and the lights were solid. Immediately as my eyes tracked across the path of the lights we noticed another group of lights exactly the same in a triangle shape. However these were just hanging in the sky. Apart from one light that appeared to move independently of the others. We watched for thirty seconds until they disappeared.

Witness Statement: Having seen a ufo once before when I was 16 and not reporting it witnessed with a mate, well now 43 and I'm going to share this one with you. Location was Marlow Park playground. It was my daughter aged 2 Jessie who said look, was like a fire ball of orange light moving same speed as a plane it went across the sky witnessed by a family and others in the park at the time. I overheard two guys in the park saying try explaining that one away!!! I just kept on focusing on it as the fire ball went off to a dot in the distance. If anyone else saw it as well please report it as well as I know it was witnessed by others.
