Mysterious jellyfish caught in Northern Lights: Could it just be a satellite reflection?

Image
© Per-Arne MikalsenMr Mikalsen captured this strange phenomenon he described as a 'parachute' when taking pictures of the vivid Aurora over Andenes, Norway
A strange jellyfish-shaped object spotted hanging in the sky over Norway, may have been caused by light from the aurora being bounced off a space satellite, experts say.

If proven it will be the first known case of a satellite reflecting the Northern Lights.

The mysterious phenomenon was photographed last week by amateur photographer Per-Arne Milkalsen over Andenesm, Norway.

The photographer became fascinated with aurorae after working at a rocket launch site in the far north of Norway for 25 years. The northern lights are often visible here because it is so close to the North Pole.

Aurorae are caused by the interaction of the solar wind with Earth's magnetic field and so are particularly prevalent at the poles where the magnetic forces are strongest.

Mr Mikalsen told the Mail Online: 'I have never seen an object like this before, and I am eager to find an explanation to the phenomenon.'

MSM UFO 'disclosure' continues: UK Daily Mail asks "Are aliens out there? Heavens, I hope so!"

Is anybody REALLY out there? Our probes hunt for signs not of intelligent life, but for primitive microbes
Six-eyed slime monsters. Tentacled terrors. Giant creepy-crawlies. But as scientists debate what form ET might take, Michael Hanlon says that the most terrifying possibility of all is that we're alone in the Universe...

As a science writer, I often wonder what could be the biggest story to break in my line of work, something which would put up a fight with the Second Coming for precedence on the front page.

The arrival of the first human clone perhaps? Interesting, but not truly world-changing.

A cure for cancer? That would be the story of the century, but sadly it will probably never happen (cancer is, in any case, many diseases, not one).

No, the biggest event would be the confirmed discovery of intelligent alien life.

Microbes on Mars, say, would be a huge enough story, although after the initial excitement this would be seen as of mostly academic interest.

Earth making too much noise: becoming invisible to aliens

Image

Chances of earth being detected by alien life forms are disappearing because of the digital revolution, a leading space scientist has claimed.

Dr Frank Drake said the phasing out of analogue transmissions from television, radio and radar was making our planet electronically invisible from outer space.

While old style signals used to spread out millions of miles into outer space, even reaching some distant stars, digital transmissions are much weaker and therefore are less easy to detect by extra-terrestrial life forms.

Scientists on earth are constantly monitoring the heavens for any sign of transmissions from other planets and it is assumed other life forms out there will be doing the same.

Wolf

England: Is Cannock Chase Panther a wild wolf?

A new wave of sightings of a mysterious creature in the area has led to suggestions the fabled Chase Panther could, in fact, be a wild wolf.

Over the past decade, many eyewitnesses claim to have spied a big cat prowling the vast undergrowth of Cannock Chase - The Sunday Mercury even sent reporter Jonny Dangerous out to find the beast.

"I was driving through the trees in the direction of Stafford when I saw something dark moving amongst the bushes on the right hand side of the car," he said.

"I slowed down to get a better look. It was probably about 80 metres away. It was aware I had slowed down, but did not seem too fussed. It disappeared into the bushes and I lost sight of it.

"It was definitely not a cat, it had more of a dog's characteristics. It had a long nose and sharp, pointy ears.

"It looked much larger than a dog, though - it had a long back and was dark black in colour.

Comment: There is a video here [LINK] accompanying the original article. Unless the reporter is genuinely missing, which we doubt, it seems the Sunday Mercury thought it necessary to produce the video to ridicule the reports of witness sightings.

US: Several See Yellowish-Gold Objects Hovering Over LA Airport

Posted: January 26, 2010

Date of Sighting: January 3, 2010
Time of Sighting: 11:30 to 11:45 AM PST
Location of Sighting: Hawthorne, California (About 2 Miles ESE of Los Angeles Airport)

Description: I reported about an object in the sky on January 2, 2010. The next day after waking up at nearly the same time, I was sitting around with my relatives and for some reason I brought up the story about the sighting. After telling them the story I was curious to see if the object was around the same vicinity at around the same time. I went outside looking for the yellowish gold object and to my surprise it was there again. I called my relatives out and pointed toward the object. The first to see it was my niece and the second my sister and her friend. They gazed upon the moving object in amazement. They had never witnessed such sighting. The object had almost the same trajectory as the first one I reported. About 10 minutes later my niece noticed another similar object in the vicinity of Los Angeles Airport. At that point we knew these were UFOs and I immediately called 911 telling them there was an "unidentified flying object" hovering around the LAX airspace which by law is illegal and should have had their attention.

England: Witness sees two rotating lights attached to a flat, circular base

Posted: January 27, 2010

Location of Sighting: M4 corridor between JCT 17 and JCT 18
Date of Sighting: 26th Jan 2010
Time: 1201

Witness Statement: I was traveling in my lorry along the M4 west bound heading for JCT 18. Ahead of me in the road I could see a flashing police car on the hard shoulder. As I approached I could tell it was a unmarked black BMW police car and it looked like it had pulled over a whiter motor vehicle on the hard shoulder. As I passed these two I looked into the sky to my right and I noticed two orange/amber lights. They just grabbed my attention as they were moving unlike an aeroplane. I watched as they got closer to the M4 and lower in the air. At this point I knew whatever it was, was not a plane as by now it had starting rotating 360 degrees in the sky.

England: Witness sees a bright ball of light shoot across the sky making a 'deep echo' sound

Posted: January 27, 2010

Location of Sighting: Littlehampton, West Sussex
Date of Sighting: 27th jan 2010
Time: 01.00

Witness Statement: Was standing outside having a cigarette when I noticed a bright ball of light shoot across the sky in front of me. It came from the west and was heading east. It was too low in the sky to be a shooting star but was moving way to fast to be a plane/jet. It made a noise for about 2 seconds at most but not a jet engine sound it was more of a deep echo. I had a full 180 degree view as it passed over but it seemed to disappear too early to be going over the horizon. Must comment on the speed of it again have never seen a plane of any sort going that speed before and the sound it made was really strange.

Canada: DND, RCMP Mum on UFO Mystery

California ufo
© Darlene StewartResidents of Harbour Mille, N.L., reported seeing this object fly over their community Monday night.
People who saw a missile-like object soaring through the sky over a small rural community in Newfoundland Monday night are getting no answers about what it was, although police say they'd gotten to the bottom of the mystery.

Darlene Stewart spotted the object while taking pictures of the sunset over Harbour Mille, a community of about 200 residents on the south coast of the province. She says she started snapping photos.

She then called her neighbour, Emmy Pardy, and the two women, along with Stewart's husband, say they saw three similar objects flying through the air minutes apart, one up close and two farther off in the distance.

"I really did get sick to my stomach, I was shaking when I seen it," Stewart told CBC News Wednesday. "We were just in awe of what we seen."

The photos taken by Stewart show blurry pictures of what appears to be a long, round object, much like a missile, seemingly rising from the ocean, with either smoke or flames shooting out the back end.

The verdict is in - Dorset's big cat mystery could be more than just a tall tail.

Recent sightings have been reported of a black panther-like creature prowling the countryside.

A lamb killed at a Bockhampton farm is said to have been savaged by a big cat.

Vet Duncan Reavell has looked at a picture of a deer thought to have been killed by the predator dubbed the 'Beast of Bockhampton' and thinks a big cat could be responsible.

The picture was taken by reader Judy Paterson.

RSPCA shop worker Judy came across a carcass while walking her dog at Conygar Hill near Dorchester.

American Paranormal Bigfoot Episode Hits It Out of the Park

I recorded last night's episodes of American Paranormal from the National Geographic Channel and watched the bigfoot episode just now. It is outstanding. If you haven't seen it, make sure to watch it when it repeats. (You can visit the American Paranormal website here.)

The show focused on the work done by Bill Munns and Dr. Meldrum. It made the point that hair samples return as "unknown primate," and that the Patterson/Gimlin film shows a figure that simply could not be a human in a suit because of body proportions, musculature, and size. It's the best presentation I've seen of this evidence, and it was very well done. You have to watch it.

Here's a couple of clips from their website:
