"We found 14% of the people in the US have diabetes, and this was even higher in blacks, Asians and Hispanics," said Andy Menke, PhD, epidemiologist and lead author for the study, which was published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Previous studies had shown cases of diabetes, once a rare disease, increasing. There are currently an estimated 27 million people with diabetes and 86 million with pre-diabetes in the US, according to the WebMD website.
Researchers conducting the study wanted find percentages for those in the population who had been diagnosed with diabetes, those with undiagnosed diabetes, and those with pre-diabetes indicators.
Among the findings was that diabetes was more prevalent in those aged 65 years and older, with 33 percent affected, compared to those aged 45-64 years (17.5 percent), and those aged 45 or younger (5 percent). Broken down by gender, diabetes affected 15 percent of men and 13 percent of women.
A study published in the journal Neuroscience by researchers at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine has found that the consumption of alcohol alters the function and structure of neurons in the dorsomedial striatum. This part of the brain is known to be important in goal-driven behaviors.
The researchers' key finding lies in what are known as medium spiny neurons - the main type of cell in the striatum. Using an animal model, the scientists determined that alcohol changes the physical structure of those neurons.
Arctic Root is a plant indigenous to Siberia, where it thrives in high altitudes and dry arctic climate. The primary medicinal compounds of Arctic Root are derived from the root of the plant. In Russia, Scandinavia and much of Europe, Arctic Root has been traditionally recognized for its adaptogenic properties. An adaptogen is a physiological agent that naturally increases the body's resistance to physical and emotional stress.
Today's announcement from the EPA's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment is officially a "notice of intent" to list this pesticide as carcinogenic, giving the public an opportunity to comment on the proposal through October 5. The action falls under Proposition 65, a measure voters approved in 1986 that requires the state to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harms. The state regularly updates the list, which now includes hundreds of chemicals. Under Prop 65, businesses must provide a "clear and reasonable" warning before exposing people to a chemical on the list. The warning could be labels on a consumer product, workplace postings, distributed notices at apartment buildings, or a notice published in a newspaper.

Let me let you in on a secret. You can temporarily mitigate the pain and suffering of a toothache with with the oil of clove, an inexpensive and readily available essential oil commonly referred to as clove oil or clove bud oil."

So far in 2015, 415 cases of West Nile have been reported to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 45 states and the District of Columbia. There were 10 deaths from the mosquito-borne disease in the country as of September 1.
North Carolina has not released any information about the victim, including age, gender and location of the person who died.
"This is a tragic reminder that these infections, though relatively rare, can be fatal, "Dr. Carl Williams, State Public Health veterinarian, said in a statement. "We see most cases of mosquito-borne illness in the months from August through October, but you can still enjoy your time outdoors by following some basic control measures."
About 1 in 5 people infected with West Nile Virus will develop a fever with other symptoms. Less than 1 percent of infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, neurologic illness, the CDC said.
Improving the function of your mitochondria can be as simple as making lifestyle changes. Certain strategies have been shown to treat symptoms associated with mitochondrial defects. You can use these techniques beginning today to help you maintain mighty mitochondria.
The physiological effects of mitochondria function
The healthy function of mitochondria is essential to life sustaining metabolic processes including(1, 2):
- Regulating ion concentrations such as calcium buffering critical to intracellular communication
- Synthesizing products necessary for the transportation of glucose and insulin
- Maintaining roles in fluctuating lipid levels
- Regulating the removal of cellular damage or apoptosis if condition is deleterious enough to the mitochondrion's function
- Providing sufficient energy for blood flow to and within the heart
Enough light exposure at night can keep anyone from falling asleep as quickly as they otherwise would have. But the new research, published online in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, finds that the sleep biology of boys and girls aged 9 to 15 who were in the earlier stages of puberty were especially sensitive to light at night compared to older teens. In lab experiments, an hour of nighttime light exposure suppressed their production of the sleep-timing hormone melatonin significantly more than the same light exposure did for teens aged 11 to 16 who were farther into puberty.
The brighter the light in the experiments, the more melatonin was suppressed. Among 38 children in early to middle puberty an hour of 15 lux of light (think dim "mood" lighting) suppressed melatonin by 9.2 percent, 150 lux (normal room light) reduced it by 26 percent, and 500 lux (as bright as in a supermarket) reduced it by 36.9 percent. The 29 teens in the late or post-puberty stage were also affected, but not as much. Exposure to 15 lux did not suppress melatonin at all, 150 lux reduced it 12.5 percent, and 500 lux reduced it by 23.9 percent.

Blood test can detect 'biological age' & predict Alzheimer's risk, says study
The test, developed by a team at King's College London, measures a person's "biological age," which may be younger or older than their actual chronological age.
"We use birth year, or chronological age, to judge everything from insurance premiums to whether you get a medical procedure or not. Most people accept that all 60-year-olds are not the same, but there has been no reliable test for underlying biological age," said study leader James Timmons, professor of precision medicine at King's College London, as quoted by AAP
I received several comments on the blog, Facebook, Instagram, e-mails and even text and phone calls from friends who have reached out to me about experiencing similar GI distress.
As much as I wouldn't wish what I've dealt with on anyone, I found a lot of comfort to hear from you and to know that I wasn't crazy, that it wasn't all in my head and that, most importantly, I wasn't alone. So thank you for that...
So with all of the above being said, there was obviously a ton of questions regarding colostrum.
What is it? How does it heal a leaky gut? How much should I take? How do I pick out a good quality brand? What about dairy allergies/intolerances?
This post is intended to clear up all those questions for you. Ideally, I would have written an informative post like this first, but I really felt the urgency to share my success with others. I had no idea it would generate so much traffic on this site. Glad it did though.
What is Colostrum?
Colostrum, aka "pre-milk", is produced by all mammals (including humans) during late pregnancy for their newborn to drink in the first few days of life, just before the breast milk comes in. The purpose of colostrum is to act as a form of passive immunity and provide a hefty dose of anti-bodies, such as IgA, IgG and IgM, which help to build the newborn's immunity. It also contains antimicrobials and several growth factors.
