Fat Controversy - What You Don't Know About Healthy Fats

Fat Controversy
© Sott.net
We all know that saturated fats are unhealthy and kill us. The government says it, the experts say it, and the medical professionals say it.

But is this really the case? Let's have a look a the actual science behind this claim.

The hypothesis, that saturated fats are unhealthy was first developed in 1955 by a researcher, Ancel Keys. In his famous - or I should rather say infamous - Seven Countries Study, he showed that the countries with the highest amount of saturated fat in their diet showed the highest rates of cardiovascular disease.

The problem with his study however was pointed out by two other researchers - Yerushalmy and Hilleboe - two years later. Keys had only picked seven countries out of a total of 22 for which these data were available. Had he used the full data set, his theory would have looked much weaker, and his study probably never published.

Antibiotics in livestock: California takes a stand

Image
In 2009, a salmonella outbreak in a California beef plant left 63 people ill. Five years later, another salmonella outbreak linked to California poultry plants infected more than 600 people.

Both outbreaks were traced back to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, or "superbugs," often developed in farms that pump their livestock with human antibiotics to spur animal growth and prevent diseases from spreading in overpopulated farms. This means that if a disease hops from the animal to a farm employee — or a dinner plate to a human's digestive system — regular antibiotics wouldn't be able to cure the disease. And if it isn't contained, there's little stopping a major deadly outbreak.

Iodine treats breast cancer and more, overwhelming evidence

Figure from Funahashi 2001. Breast cancer induced in rats with a carcinogenic chemical. Left column Images are rats pre-treated with Iodine (mekabu seaweed) showing no breast cancer tumors. Right column images are untreated (Control) rats with large breast cancer tumors visible at the red arrows).
A good friend of ours just went through an ordeal with breast cancer. The incidence of breast cancer has increased to 1 in 8 women, with 4,000 new cases weekly. You might ask, could there be a preventive measure which is safe, cheap and widely available that has been overlooked?

The answer is YES, and it's the essential mineral, Iodine, which was added to table salt in 1924 as part of a national program to prevent Goiter. Goiter is a form of thyroid enlargement caused by iodine deficiency.

Our Diet is Iodine Deficient

Iodized salt is the major source of dietary iodine for Americans. Yet, many of us have been told by the doctor to avoid salt, because salt causes high blood pressure. Those following this advice will have very little dietary iodine. In fact, we have a generalized iodine deficiency in our population. Currently 15% of the US adult female population is classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as iodine deficient. (9) Although all processed foods contain a large quantity of salt, none of this added salt is iodized. There is no iodine added.

Oregano oil: A powerhouse for the alternative medicine cabinet

oregano oil
Oregano oil is the ultimate antibiotic. Oregano is a powerful herb with unique healing properties. Did you know that oregano has eight times more antioxidants than apples and three times as much as blueberries? Antioxidants are needed to protect our body against free radical damage. They boost the immune-system naturally. Oregano Oil is the most potent plant oil in the world!

The distribution of oregano oil started in Ancient Greece. In Greek the word oregano is translated as joy of the mountains. The Greeks were first to use oil for medicinal purposes, such as a powerful antiviral, antibacterial, antiseptic, antifungal agent and also as a remedy for pain, and inflammation. It was the main antibacterial tool used by Hippocrates. Oregano leaves were traditionally used to treat illnesses related to the respiratory and digestive systems.

Before autism had a name

Steve Silberman's Neurotribes traces the history and evolving definition of autism—and argues for a more nuanced, more empathetic understanding of what it means to be autistic.

"A six-year-old boy," reported the Times of India, "has been returned to his parents after being in the company of wolves for four and a half years." In the fall of 1957, shortly after this story appeared, a curious sociologist traced the story's origins. There was a boy who had been found alone, who spoke few words and seemed "interested in people only as objects." But there were no wolves. Scholars have argued that this boy, named Parasram, and many children before him belong to the pre-history of autism. And really, consider it: An unspeaking child is found untended in the wild, and we conclude that she or he was stolen by wolves or nursed by pumas. We interpret scars as evidence of a life among beasts. There is a deficit of humanity in these stories, but it doesn't belong to the abandoned children or to the nurturing packs and prides. The deficit lies in our inability to recognize ourselves among the less-familiar forms of human experience.

The Health & Wellness Show: Alternative Medicine Overview

alternative medicine
Today on the Health and Wellness show we'll be doing an overview of alternatives to mainstream medicine.

Acupuncture, Homeopathy, Orthomolecular Medicine, and more.

While discernment is necessary, and it's not black and white that "alternative is good, big pharma is bad," there are many conditions for which natural remedies are safe and effective.

Please join us for a discussion framed around these possibilities. Included as always will be Zoya's Pet Health Segment.

Poisoned agriculture & human extinction

Image

A new paper by Rosemary A Mason in the Journal of Biological Physics and Chemistry, indicates that a 'sixth extinction' is under way (the Holocene extinction, sometimes called the Sixth Extinction, is a name describing the ongoing extinction of species during the present Holocene epoch - since around 10,000 BCE). In her paper, 'The sixth mass extinction and chemicals in the environment: our environmental deficit is now beyond nature's ability to regenerate', she argues that loss of biodiversity is the most urgent of the environmental problems, as biodiversity is critical to ecosystem services and human health. And the main culprit is the modern chemical-intensive industrialised system of food and agriculture.

Mason asserts there is a growing threat from the release of hormone-disrupting chemicals that could even be shifting the human sex ratio and reducing sperm counts. An industrial agricultural revolution has created a technology-dependent global food system, but it has also created serious long-run vulnerabilities, especially in its dependence on stable climates, crop monocultures and industrially produced chemical inputs. In effect, farming is a principal source of global toxification and soil degradation.

New report reveals: ' A Million cancer deaths from Fukushima expected in Japan'

Image
A shocking new report defies the chronically underestimated impacts of the Fukushima's triple meltdown on the risk of cancer in exposed populations, which does not just include Japan, but arguably the entire world.

A new report from Fairewinds Energy Education (FEE), "Cancer on the Rise in Post-Fukushima Japan," reveals that the ongoing multi-core nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi plant that started in March 2011 has produced approximately 230 times higher than normal thyroid cancers in Fukushima Prefecture, and could result in as many as one million more cancers in Japan's future as a result of the meltdown.

Cooking with vegetable oils releases toxic cancer-causing chemicals, say experts

Image
© Telegraph
Cooking with vegetable oils releases toxic chemicals linked to cancer and other diseases, according to leading scientists, who are now recommending food be fried in olive oil, coconut oil, butter or even lard.

The results of a series of experiments threaten to turn on its head official advice that oils rich in polyunsaturated fats - such as corn oil and sunflower oil - are better for the health than the saturated fats in animal products.

Scientists found that heating up vegetable oils led to the release of high concentrations of chemicals called aldehydes, which have been linked to illnesses including cancer, heart disease and dementia.
