Defense Department to ban beer and pizza? Mandatory keto diet may enhance military performance

soldiers pizza beer
© Sgt. Roland Hale/Army
U.S. soldiers serving in Afghanistan make an Independence Day toast over a special holiday treat of pizzas and non-alcoholic beers.
The controversial ketogenic or "keto" diet may be the future of the military, some defense officials say.

Service members, and Navy SEALS especially, may have to forgo beer and burritos for skinny cocktails and avocado salad (forget the tortilla chips) if a proposal from Special Operations Command gains momentum.

While a nutritionally enhanced future could eventually be put into effect for all branches, the SEALS and other underwater dive-mission specialists might be the first groups targeted for the change in nutritional guidelines.

Comment: A ketogenic diet makes sense for an institution like the military, concerned with performance, stamina and body composition. If properly promoted, the top brass may find their soldiers voluntarily taking up the diet since its benefits can be so marked. Overall, the move seems like a good one, although making the diet mandatory will inevitably run into questions of freedom to choose for the soldiers.

Lone star tick bite causes severe meat allergy in US farmer

tick
A tick turned Kristie Downen into a vegan.

"It was the last thing on my mind," the Missouri farmer tells Springfield's KSPR TV of her "life-changing experience ... [it's] unbelievable that a tick can make you allergic to food."

Downen was bitten by a common "lone star" tick four years ago — but doctors were unable to diagnose the array of symptoms she developed until this year.

"It got to the point where my stomach would swell up, I was vomiting," Downen says. "The rashes were real bad, it was getting to the point [I told doctors], 'You're missing something, I'm still dying.' "

Comment: There are various ways one could can attempt to ameliorate the problems of these tick borne diseases. Although the threats ticks pose appears to only be increasing: Also check out SOTT radio's: The Health & Wellness Show: A Close Look at Lyme Disease

Fake Food, Fake Meat: Big Food's desperate attempt to further the industrialization of food

Vandana Shiva

The ontology and ecology of food

Food is not a commodity, it is not "stuff" put together mechanically and artificially in labs and factories. Food is life. Food holds the contributions of all beings that make the food web, and it holds the potential of maintaining and regenerating the web of life. Food also holds the potential for health and disease, depending on how it was grown and processed. Food is therefore the living currency of the web of life.

As an ancient Upanishad reminds us "Everything is food, everything is something else's food. "

Good Food and Real Food are the basis of health.

Bad food, industrial food, fake food is the basis of disease.

Hippocrates said "Let food be thy medicine". In Ayurveda, India's ancient science of life, food is called "sarvausadha" the medicine that cures all disease.

Comment: For more on the negative health and environmental effects of Big Food and Industrial Agriculture read the following article: Toxic agriculture: Poisoning of soils, human health and the environment
These problems are not confined to Europe and the US; they are global. Spiraling cancer rates in Argentina linked to the use of glyphosate spring to mind. In Punjab, India, pesticides have turned the state into a 'cancer epicentre'. Moreover, Indian soils are being depleted as a result of the application of 'green revolution' ideology and chemical inputs. India is losing 5,334 million tonnes of soil every year due to soil erosion because of the indiscreet and excessive use of fertilisers, insecticides and pesticides. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research reports that soil is becoming deficient in nutrients and fertility. As smallholders the world over are being driven from their land and the chemical-industrial farming model takes over, the problems continue to mount.

The environment, the quality of our food and our health are being sacrificed on the altar of corporate profit. The solution involves a shift to organic farming and investment in and reaffirmation of indigenous models of agriculture as advocated by the International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge Science and Technology (IAASTD) report.

Stranger's bone marrow donation saves 1-year-old baby girl with rare 'bubble boy' disease

Alle Jilg
In an emotional meeting, a little girl and her family came face to face with the stranger who saved her life.

Last month, Alle Jilg and her parents, Tia and Mike Jilg, met Jacob Oswald -- a father of two from Iowa whose bone marrow donation was a match for Alle.

"All you can really do is thank him over and over again," dad Mike Jilg of Broken Bow, Nebraska, told "Good Morning America." "The interaction he had with Alle and the way they connected, it was like she was his own child."

Alle Jilg was born with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), also known as rare "bubble boy" disease.

The metabolic approach to cancer treatment

cells mitochondria
Cancer kills an estimated 1,600 Americans each day. In China, 8,100 people a day succumb to the disease. It's so common, it's a rare individual who does not know someone who has been diagnosed with cancer - which is why the topic of this interview is so important.

Dr. Nasha Winters is a naturopathic physician who specializes in cancer treatment. While she has treated cancer patients in the past, she's developed a more efficient model where she now focuses on training clinicians and consulting with those treating patients.

I've been very impressed with her work. She has embraced the ketogenic diet and integrates it as a strategic tool in the therapeutic planning. She also uses many other, less well-known strategies. If you're affected by cancer and believe her skills may be helpful, you can have your clinician consult with her to fine-tune your treatment.

Objective:Health #21 - Iatrogenesis - Death by Modern Medicine

O:H header
Iatrogenesis, from the Greek; Iatros, meaning doctor, and Genesis, meaning origin. The word means anything that comes from the result of working with a physician, but is usually used in terms of noxious, unintended, and undesired effects of medical therapies. Whether physician error, negative effects of drugs, therapies or procedures, iatrogenesis has been declared to be the number three killer of people in the United States; the number five killer worldwide.

Given such incredible numbers, questions inevitably arise. How can a system of healing be responsible for such huge numbers of fatalities and serious injuries? Is this simply the 'cost of doing business,' or is there something seriously wrong with modern medicine?

Oliver Wendell Holmes, an American physician and a medical reformer of the 19th century, said, "I firmly believe that if the whole materia medica, as used now could be sunk to the bottom of the sea, it would be all the better for mankind and all the worse for the fishes." It seems we've made little progress since Holmes' time.

Join us on this episode of Objective:Health as we discuss the topic of iatrogenesis; when attempts at healing cause harm.

Gut bacteria linked to chronic pain, fibromyalgia, for first time

gut bacteria microbiome
Scientists have found a correlation between a disease involving chronic pain and alterations in the gut microbiome.

Fibromyalgia affects 2-4 percent of the population and has no known cure. Symptoms include fatigue, impaired sleep and cognitive difficulties, but the disease is most clearly characterized by widespread chronic pain. In a paper published today in the journal Pain, a Montreal-based research team has shown, for the first time, that there are alterations in the bacteria in the gastrointestinal tracts of people with fibromyalgia. Approximately 20 different species of bacteria were found in either greater or are lesser quantities in the microbiomes of participants suffering from the disease than in the healthy control group.

Comment: This is certainly an interesting piece of the fibromyalgia puzzle. Although it's preliminary research, given the importance of the microbiome, it seems likely there is at the very least a correlation. One hopes this can move forward the possibility of finding a successful treatment to this debilitating condition.

Metabolic similarities suggest path to prevention of neurodegenerative disorders

June is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month. One could argue that awareness of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease - which gradually destroy brain cells as we age - is already at a fever pitch. Who among us hasn't yet been personally affected by these thieves of intellect and dignity?

Now a global epidemic, Alzheimer's disease already plagues nearly six million Americans and 50 million people worldwide.

Parkinson's disease, the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, afflicts approximately one million people in the United States and as many as ten million people worldwide.

Comment: Given the amount of research showing improved brain function on the ketogenic diet, it's little wonder that the diet looks to be beneficial for Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Anti-Vaxxer. Conspiracy Theorist. Negligent Parent. Selfish. Stupid. Crazy. Dangerous.

I have been called a lot of things since I started vocalizing some of my concerns about these massive attempts to remove philosophical, religious and even medical exemptions for mandated vaccinations across the country. People who I have never met before, who know nothing of my personal choices, have demanded to have me removed from community Facebook pages and suggested that I no longer belong in the community (or the country in some cases). Some claim that my family and I are a threat to the world they live in and say I am not worthy of compassion or a voice in the conversation. But I am going to make another assertion about who I am: I am your friend.

Terminal apathy: Processed foods are a much bigger health problem than we thought

“These refined carbohydrates could be feeding the bad bacteria in the small intestine,” said researcher Marit Zinocker, “and that’s where inflammation starts.”
The case against processed food just keeps getting stronger. But, amazingly, we still don't understand exactly why it's so bad for us.

In two new papers published in the BMJ, the more ultra-processed - or industrially manufactured - foods a person ate, the more likely they were to get sick and even die. In one study, they were more likely to suffer from cardiovascular problems. The other linked an ultra-processed diet to a higher risk of death from all causes.

Those studies followed a first-of-its-kind randomized controlled trial, out of the National Institutes of Health: Researchers found people following an ultra-processed diet ate about 500 more calories per day than those consuming minimally processed, whole foods.

Comment: Consider the fact that over 50% of the average American Caloric intake comes from 'ultra processed foods' and then read the following article. Is there a clear relationship between junk food consumption in America and terminal apathy?
Terminal apathy & junk food: What rats say about Americans:

Dr. Blaisdell's study clearly indicates that junk food, while causing obesity, subsequently causes laziness and fatigue. Combined, the political cousin of these two symptoms is: apathy.

By all metrics, Americans consume the most quantity of the worst-quality food supply in the developed world, as such leading in obesity. In America this endemic apathy is causing Americans to have little interest in their own increasing domestic peril. In a nation of increasing authoritarian governmental control, American processed junk food may have now become the most effective US government weapon for controlling the reactions of its own population. Examples of irrational American apathy are evident every week.
