A team of Japanese scientists demonstrates that treatment with AHR agonists decreases expression of ACE2 via AHR activation, resulting in suppression of COVID-19.
Researchers have identified a potential reason why
lower numbers of COVID cases have appeared amongst smokers compared to non-smokers, even as other reports suggest smoking increases severity of the disease.
Researchers have identified two drugs that mimic the effect of chemicals in
cigarette smoke to bind to a receptor in
mammalian cells that inhibits production of ACE2 proteins, a process that appears to reduce the ability of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to enter the cell.
The findings appear in the journal
Scientific Reports on 17 August.
Comment: Considering the demonization of tobacco and smoking, it's surprising that the findings of this study were ever allowed to see the light of day. Although this could be explained in part because, firstly there's a profit to be made in tobacco replacement therapies, but also because it's an undeniable fact that has been discovered by numerous researchers around the world who have published their data.
We first heard about this
discovery over in China - that has one of the world's largest tobacco smoking populations - where researchers found early on, with reports coming out in February 2020, that smokers were less likely to contract and suffer from severe coronavirus infection. A few months later France
revealed similar findings, and it was
confirmed again more than a year later by researchers in India.
Note that tobacco has been in use for
thousands of
years and it was widely considered to have numerous beneficial and medicinal properties, it was only later that it demonised. Cannabis suffered a similar fate, because it's prohibition strongly served political purposes, however it's now being hailed as an incredibly
valuable medicine. Interestingly the historical records show that it was reported that smoking tobacco provided
protection against the Black Death.
It's a rather curious convergence we find ourselves in, that the authorities have spent decades tightening the screws on tobacco smokers are now hystericising the population over a relatively harmless virus; a virus whose already vanishing small severity and mortality rate is reduced by the very tobacco smoking they've worked to prohibit.
It's also notable that those countries with some of the most draconian lockdown laws, are also at the forefront of total tobacco prohibition; New Zealand as just
one of the most extreme examples. And, as a related aside, Hitler is one of the most
well known vociferous anti-smokers.
As for how to make the most of these findings, rather than become involved in yet more
experimentation, and opt for unnatural, isolated, and patented products pharmaceutical companies will throw together, it's probably better, for those that find it beneficial, to stick to the natural product, that has thousands of years of safety data, and that may even be more beneficial because it's a whole product with multiple compounds working in synergy:
