How 'hyperpalatable' non-foods could turn you into a food addict and make you obese

Over a third of the global population is now overweight, and the percentages are increasing. Some neuroscientists have suggested that the rise of so-called "hyperpalatable foods" may partially explain the unprecedented rates of obesity.

Our food environment has changed dramatically over the years, most notably through the introduction of so-called "hyperpalatable" foods. These foods are deliberately engineered in such a way that they surpass the reward properties of traditional foods, such as vegetables, fruits, and nuts. Food chemists achieve this by suffusing products with increased levels of fat, sugar, flavors, and food additives.

Conditioned hypereating

David A. Kessler, author of The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite and former head of the FDA, claims that the food industry has combined and created foods in a way that taps into our brain circuitry, thus stimulating our desire for more. On their own, these ingredients aren't particularly potent, but when combined in specific ways, they tap into the brain's reward system, creating a feedback loop that stimulates our desire to eat and leaves us wanting more - even when we're full.

Some years ago, bread companies got the word that customers wanted more fiber in their bread. Instead of making more of their bread with whole grains, a few companies actually put in wood pulp and labeled it as "fiber". Today, in San Francisco, a group of synthetic biology companies and a representative from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) are holding a meeting called the SynBioBeta Cultured Food Forum about how to market foods and food additives made from extreme forms of genetic engineering as "natural" and "sustainable."

Whenever you read or hear the term synthetic biology, remember that it is a euphemism for extreme genetic engineering. This supposedly new technology is really just a similar but more extreme form of the genetic engineering of bacteria, plants and animals that has been going on for the last three decades or more. Because it is an extreme form of genetic engineering, it should be subject to more, not less regulation. It is the exact reverse of natural.

A long-running cooking manga best known for the adventures of a culinary journalist has gotten into hot water with the central and local government, with its less than stellar depictions of the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

In the latest "Oishinbo", a mashup of the Japanese words "delicious" and "gourmand", a character based on the real former Futaba Mayor, Katsutaka Idogawa, warns that many locals suffer from symptoms of radiation exposure.

Idogawa also criticizes the responses from plant operator, the Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) and the central government to the worst nuclear disaster in Japan's history. Futaba is one of two municipalities that host the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Another character portraying Takeru Arakida, associate professor at Fukushima University, says Idogawa reached his conclusions after heavy consideration and reflection which were "immune from any lie or falsehood and are weighty," the Japan News reports.

"You simply can't decontaminate a wide area in Fukushima and make it a place where people can live again," Arakida says in the manga. "This is the truth of Fukushima," another character responds.

MERS virus resurfaces in Florida, health workers isolated

Two hospital workers, who were not wearing masks, were exposed to the highly deadly virus MERS recently after the patient passed through two hospitals, including Dr. Phillips Hospital.

At least one of the workers has been put into isolation and is being monitored closely as MERS has a rather long 5-day incubation period.

Other reports state that a second worker was also exposed to the infected patient as well and is being now isolated inside his residence by authorities.

Fox News reported:

Hospital officials said the MERS patient, who works in a hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is doing well and currently has a low-grade fever and a slight cough.

If you're like me, then you are probably overwhelmed with emails and articles opining on the evils of Monsanto - and for good reason. Monsanto is a chemical company that began genetically engineering seeds in order to sell more chemicals. The company's business model is based on privatizing life, privatizing our genetic heritage (seeds), and poisoning the Earth. But did you know that Monsanto is just one of the major chemical players that have taken over our agriculture? Others include Syngenta, Bayer, DuPont, and BASF. Monsanto is corporate villain number one, providing PR cover for these other companies that do the same thing with far less public attention. That is about to change. There is one company that may even be worse than Monsanto. And unless we act soon, that company is going to start contaminating our farms and our food in ways we have never seen before. Meet the Dow Chemical company.

So how is Dow Chemical becoming the new Monsanto? As we all know, Monsanto has been the leader in producing genetically engineered pesticide-promoting crops (PPCs). By inserting bacterial DNA into corn and soy, Monsanto scientists were able to allow these plants to withstand massive spraying of their weed killer Roundup. Normally, if sprayed over the whole field, the weed killer would kill both the weeds and the crop, but now only the weeds perish and the GE crops survive. Monsanto aggressively promoted these crops, and large farmers adopted it because now they could conveniently spray their fields, even aerial spray, and not have to be careful with their herbicide use. It became convenient for large corn and soy farmers, and a boon for Monsanto as it began selling hundreds of millions more pounds of Roundup.

A colorized transmission of the MERS coronavirus that first emerged in 2012. Health officials on Monday, May 12, 2014 confirmed a second U.S. case of the mysterious virus that has sickened hundreds in the Middle East.

The CDC reported Monday a second case of Middle East Respiratory System (MERS) coronavirus found in the US. The virus was detected in an Orlando patient who had traveled from Saudi Arabia and is now in a Central Florida Hospital.

The first case involved a man who was visiting Saudi Arabia and flew into Highland, Indiana earlier this month. He was released just days ago from a northwestern Indiana hospital after officials determined he no longer carried the virus.

"The patient has tested negative for MERS, is no longer symptomatic and poses no threat to the community," the hospital said in a statement.

He is now considered to be fully recovered and none of those tracked with whom he made contact have shown signs of being infected by the virus.

Both men were health care workers in Saudi Arabia, which may have established the close contact needed for contracting MERS.

"Our experience with MERS so far suggests that the risk to the general public is extremely low," said the director of the CDC, Dr. Tom Frieden. "Transmission requires close contact -- for example, caring for someone when they're sick at home or sick in the hospital."

This review of The Big Fat Surprise by Nina Teicholz is the most difficult and demanding I have ever written. It is demanding for a couple of reasons.

First, it is psychologically demanding on me because I want to write a review so good it inspires everyone to buy the book immediately and read it. Why? Because I think it is one of the most important books on nutrition ever written. Maybe the most important. And I feel a responsibility to inspire as many people as I can to get their hands on it.

Second, this book is so brimming with valuable information that I was almost paralyzed in trying to figure out which parts to excerpt. A book review always comes with excerpts, and this book presented me with such a bounty of choices, it took me forever to decide which to use.

I can categorically tell you that there are not enough superlatives - at least not in my vocabulary - to adequately describe how wonderful and important this book is. But I'm going to try because I really believe it is that good.

I met Nina Teicholz five or six years ago when I was in New York. She told me she had converted from a low-fat to a low-carb diet and that she was writing a book. We really didn't discuss the book she was writing, so I was clueless. We kept in sporadic touch via email and exchanged a scientific paper or two, but that was about it. I hadn't heard from her in a couple of years when last September out of the blue I got an email from her saying the first draft of her book was finished. She asked if I would mind reading it and giving her feedback.

In September 2011, SaneVax Inc. informed the FDA that despite all Merck's statements claiming Gardasil contained 'no viral DNA,' Dr. Sin Hang Lee had discovered there were indeed fragments of HPV-11, HPV-16 and HPV-18 L1 DNA firmly attached to Merck's proprietary aluminum adjuvant in 100% of the samples his laboratory tested.

The FDA was quick to confirm that Gardasil did indeed contain residual HPV L1 DNA fragments, but that these fragments 'posed no health risk.'

By 2012, Dr. Lee had discovered that these HPV DNA fragments were not only bound to Merck's proprietary aluminum adjuvant, but they had also adopted a non-B conformation, thereby creating a novel (new) chemical compound of unknown toxicity.

Non-B DNA conformations are known to be associated with genetic mutations connected to over 70 serious diseases in human beings including polycystic kidney disease, adrenoleukodystrophy, follicular lymphomas, and spermatogenic failure, just to name a few.

Instead of investigating any potential problems which could be caused by injections of this new chemical compound, HPV vaccine proponents and government health officials chose to try and minimize the impact Dr. Lee's discovery might make on HPV vaccination programs around the globe. Rather than conducting legitimate studies to determine the extent of potential risks, they chose to attack the messenger.

Dramatic rise in food allergies in Australia with one in 10 babies developing an allergy before their first birthday

The number of Australian children developing a food allergy has spiked dramatically in the past decade with one in 10 babies being treated before they turn one.

Australia now has one of the highest rates of food allergies in the world, prompting experts to push for a national register to monitor fatalities and severe reactions.

As scientists work to understand why the country's allergy rates have risen, Dr Raymond Mullins, chair of the Australian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, said another 30,000 children develop an allergy to food every year.

'We know from previous studies that food allergy has spiked dramatically in the past 10-15 years. These children are now entering their teens and early adult years where the risk of fatal reactions becomes much greater,' Dr Mullins told the Daily Telegraph.
