Rise Seen in Colorectal Cancer in Under-50 Adults

Colorectal cancer rates are rising in adults younger than 50 with the biggest jump, more than 5 percent, recorded in those ages 20 to 29, a study found.

People older than age 50 began getting tested routinely for the disease in the mid-1980s, leading to a 2.8 percent yearly decline from 1998 to 2005 in adult men overall, according to the American Cancer Society report. Younger Americans, who make up 9 percent of the 146,970 cases expected by the society this year, aren't usually tested for the disease, the second most common cause of cancer death in U.S. adults.

UK: Olympic star Tom Daley quits school because of severe bullying

The parents of the Olympic diver Tom Daley have taken him out of school after he complained of being bullied.

The 14-year-old athlete, who found himself in the public eye while representing Britain at the Beijing Olympics last year, said that he had been attacked by pupils in the playground of his school in Devon.

His parents said that the bullying began when he started Year 10 in September, after returning from China. The situation became untenable last week when an older boy allegedly cornered Tom and said: "How much are those legs worth? We're going to break your legs."

How the Mind Controls Pain

Physical pain also has an emotional component, which means we have some control over our response to it.
Science is beginning to investigate and support the role of therapies such as biofeedback and meditation in pain control. The idea that the mind has power over the body may be especially useful to chronic pain patients who often find themselves without satisfactory medical treatments.

The emotional response to pain

Pain travels along two pathways from a source, such as an injury, back to your brain. One is the sensory pathway, which transmits the physical sensation. The other is the emotional pathway, which goes from the injury to the amygdala and the anterior cingulate cortex - areas of the brain that process emotion.

The Future of Food, A Documentary That Exposes the Biotech Threat to Life on Our Planet

Image
There is a cabal of power-hungry corporations that are systematically destroying humanity's future. These companies have taken over the food supply, injected pesticides, viruses and invading genes into staple crops, engineered "terminator" genes that make crop seeds un-viable, destroyed the livelihood of farmers and used every tactic they could think of -- legal threats, intimidation, bribery, monopolistic market practices and many more -- to gain monopolistic control over the global food supply.

One documentary brings you this astonishing story. Through the testimony of family farmers, ecological scientists, agricultural experts and numerous public documents, The Future of Food tells a horrifying, heart-stopping story of how Big Agriculture has sold out the future of human civilization for the almighty dollar.

The Future of Food is a compelling, eye-opening documentary that I consider a "must-see documentary" by anyone who eats food (which probably includes you). Even if you think you know everything worth knowing about your food, there's still a dark secret the biotech companies believe U.S. consumers should not be allowed to know: That many foods are genetically engineered with dangerous pesticides and foreign DNA, and there is currently no U.S. law requiring their labeling as such.

FDA Weighs Approval of Psychiatric Drugs for Kids

Washington - Three blockbuster psychiatric drugs currently approved for adults also appear to work in adolescents, though federal health officials have concerns about exposing younger patients to the drugs' side effects.

The Food and Drug Administration is reviewing drugs from AstraZeneca PLC, Eli Lilly & Co. and Pfizer Inc. for use in patients between the ages of 10 and 17. The drugs - already approved to treat schizophrenia and bipolar mania in adults - had combined sales of more than $7.4 billion last year, according to IMS Health.

With only two anti-psychotic drugs currently approved for younger patients, a positive decision for the three drugs would significantly increase competition in the space - and expand sales of products that already are big sellers.

Reasearch Links Coenzyme Q10 and Cancer Therapy Benefits

For all its broad health benefits there is still yet another exciting role for Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) that offers promise for those challenged with cancer. CoQ10 is a naturally occurring compound found in every cell in the body where it plays a critical role in the mitochondria that burn or oxidize food for fuel. Levels of CoQ10 decline as we age which leads to speculation that certain diseases and aging are a result of this diminished enzyme.

Adrenal Fatigue is the Root of Many Illnesses

The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys and produce a number of hormones such as adrenalin, noradrenalin, cortisol and DHEA. These hormones make us feel motivated and alive, and they enable us to do the things we want to do and to deal with any stress we have in our lives. Unfortunately, modern day living often puts the adrenal glands under constant stress that must be regularly counteracted.

Camelbak brand water bottles, on display at a store in Arcadia, Calif., are free of the controversial carbonate plastic bisphenol A, or BPA.
Manufacturers of cans for beverages and foods and some of their biggest customers, including Coca-Cola, are trying to devise a public relations and lobbying strategy to block government bans of a controversial chemical used in the linings of metal cans and lids.

According to internal notes of a private meeting, obtained by The Washington Post, frustrated industry executives huddled for hours Thursday trying to figure out how to tamp down public concerns over the chemical bisphenol A, or BPA. The notes said the executives are particularly concerned about the views of young mothers, who often make purchasing decisions for households and who are most likely to be focused on health concerns.

Tau causes tangles in brain tissue

Scientists have shown a rogue protein thought to cause Alzheimer's can spread through the brain, turning healthy tissue bad.

They believe the tau protein may share characteristics with the prion proteins which cause vCJD.

When injected into the brains of healthy mice it triggered formation of protein tangles linked to Alzheimer's.

However, experts stressed the Nature Cell Biology study did not mean tau could be passed from person to person.

Drugging foster kids shows more neglect

When a 7-year-old boy on a risky regime of psychiatric medications hangs himself in the bathroom of a foster home, you have to ask whether his guardian -- the state of Florida -- knows how to be a good parent.

It is very easy to wrest a child from negligent and abusive parents. What's difficult is to assume the responsibilities the parents never met. But that's precisely why the state took custody of the boy -- to do a better job than a negligent parent.

Once again, the state proved to be deadly negligent.
