Antibiotic-resistant illnesses currently kill an estimated 700,000 people a year globally. By 2050, these illnesses are expected to kill 10 million people. Based on recent research, it could be even worse—and coming even sooner.
We have had a taste of this over the winter, with an especially nasty Avian (or Type A) influenza bug hitting people, and in some cases being followed by secondary bacterial infection such as bronchitis or pneumonia. From what we hear, many of the people infected by the virus had the flu shot—which may have been more on target than last year, but which is never very protective, as we have pointed out before, and still contains mercury. Fortunately in most cases antibiotics still work against the secondary bacterial infections, which could otherwise be life-threatening.
"[Puerto Rico] today confirmed 19 cases of Zika virus in Puerto Rico, chiefly in the southeastern zone," Health Department Secretary Ana Riu was quoted as saying by El Vocero.
The US Centers for Disease Control has stated there are serious birth defects of the brain called microcephaly as well as other poor pregnancy outcomes in babies of mothers who were infected with the Zika virus. The Zika virus can be spread from pregnant women to unborn babies.

A transmission electron micrograph (TEM) shows the Zika virus, in an undated photo provided by the Centers For Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia.
The US Centers for Disease and Control Prevention (CDC) told the department late yesterday afternoon that the infected resident recently traveled out of the country and had "a mild case of Zika".
Originally discovered in Africa in the 1940s, the relatively-new disease first appeared in Brazil in May 2005.
According to the Arkansas health department's statement, the virus has since spread to at least 20 countries in Central and South America and the Caribbean.
Sure, your blood, skin, brain and lungs are made up of your own cells, but not entirely. Most of us are walking, talking patchworks of cells, with emissaries from our mother, children or even our siblings infiltrating every part of our bodies. Welcome to the bizarre world of microchimerism.
You are more than the sum of your cells. This idea came to prominence in mid-90s, when molecular biologist Richard Jefferson realised that the microbes inside and on us play an integral role in how healthy we are.
The idea emerged in the 1970s, when cells with male Y chromosomes were detected in the blood of pregnant women. Until then, we assumed that a mother's body and her child's were kept completely separate during pregnancy. Their blood came into close proximity in the placenta -- that large, messy bundle of blood vessels connecting mother and child via the umbilical cord -- but never actually mixed. Nutrients, oxygen and waste shuttled from one to the other through filters.
At times labelled 'radical' and 'militant', Lierre Keith is trying to open up people's eyes to the ecological disaster affecting humanity and all life on the planet. According to her, the balance between living creatures and the land is being destroyed, and it is time that people become aware of that fact.
During this interview, we clarify the ideas developed in her book, The Vegetarian Myth, which attempts to warn society about the inherent unsustainability of its modes of consumption via modern agriculture.

The study from the environmental group found that toxic chemicals are "still widely present in products by brands such as Jack Wolfskin, the North Face, Patagonia, Mammut, Norrona and Salewa."
It went on to note that the chemicals are particularly found "in the production of footwear, trousers, sleeping bags and some jackets."
There has also been a tremendous amount of support to my comments and opinions. In short, The Society Against Injecting Our Kids With Chemicals (TSAIOKWC for short) has a lot of followers.
I want to address all this misguided anger and see if we can re-direct it where it belongs.

A promising new study published in the journal Food & Function titled, "Morinda citrifolia edible leaf extract enhanced immune response against lung cancer," has found that an alcohol-based leaf extract of the noni tree (Morinda Citrifolia) was more effective than a commonly used chemotherapy drug in treating lung cancer in an animal model.
In the new study, a team of Malaysian researchers tested the relative effectiveness of the drug erlotinib (trade name Tarceva), a so-called epidemal growth factor receptor inhibitor (EGFR inhibitor), to a noni leaf extract, in lung tumor-induced albino house mice (BALB/c), and found that 21 days of treatment with a 300 mg kg-1 body weight of leaf extract was more effective suppressing lung tumour growth than a 50 mg kg-1 body weight erlotinib treatment.
According to a new study published in the journal Endocrinology, oil and natural gas operations are contaminating surface and ground water with chemicals that wreak havoc on birth and growth hormones. Other recent reports show toxic levels of selenium contamination in the groundwater near fracking operations. This is leading to premature births.
Comment: 'Only a strong response from the public can have a chance at getting the federal government to put the safety of its citizens first.'
Sad to say the federal government isn't going to be putting the 'safety of it's citizens first' anytime soon. It is painfully obvious that government organizations like the USDA and the EPA favor industry when assessing chemical dangers! It's all about profits, not protection. She's also done research on aging at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences in La Jolla, California.
"I've had a variety of experiences doing research on aging, cancer, and metabolism," she explains. "Now, currently, I'm in Oakland, California, where I'm doing my post-doctoral research, working with Dr. Bruce Ames...Part of her work involves the identification of early biomarkers of disease. For example, DNA damage is an early biomarker for cancer. She then tries to determine which micronutrients might help repair that DNA damage.
The primary focus of the research is the role of nutrition in preventing age-related diseases like cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and different inflammatory-related diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes.
I've been doing a lot of research currently on nutrition, specifically what roles micronutrients play in biological processes; how inadequacies and certain micronutrients can lead to insidious types of damage that can accumulate over decades, [and how they] lead to things like cancer and Alzheimer's disease."
She's also investigated mitochondrial function and metabolism, which is one of my own most recent passions. Dr. Lee Know's book, "Life - The Epic Story of Our Mitochondria", is a really good primer if you want to learn more about this topic after listening to this interview.
