Don't Worry, That's Just Bread Mold On Your Tampon

Image

Normally, Danielle wouldn't have pulled her Kotex tampon out of the applicator for inspection before using it. I mean, who does that? One happened to fall out of the applicator, though, and that's when she saw them. The splotches of blackish mold. "Makes you wonder how many times things like this happen to tampons and we don't have a clue," she wrote. Um, yes.

She posted photos on her blog, along with the response that she received from a Kimberly-Clark representative when she e-mailed in the same photos. Their response, paraphrased: "don't worry about that mysterious substance that you almost inserted into your vagina. It's just bread mold." Then they promised to send her coupons for more Kotex tampons. Thanks?

Is Your Cell Phone Killing You?

An excellent infographic has been released, which covers many of the physical and mental health problems, as well as the financial burden sold to an increasing number of people who feel they "cannot live without" a cell phone.

As shown below, this obsession manifests in a myriad of ways that affect individual health and social interaction.

It's not mentioned in the graphic, but the attachment to the cell phone has led to a number of states to ban cell phones after seeing that their use while driving is actually worse than driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Insulin resistance and 'wheat belly'

Some things in life are best kept to a minimum: war, crime, debt, rap music, and . . . insulin.

High levels of insulin - "hyperinsulinemia" - is among the fundamental steps that lead to so-called resistance to insulin that, in turn, leads to the cascade of events resulting in visceral fat accumulation, i.e., deep abdominal fat that encircles organs and is a virtual factory for inflammatory signals. Foods that trigger insulin to high levels thereby can be expected to contribute most to growing that belly hanging over your belt.

Insect Experts Warn Against Genetically Modified Foods

Image
After years of assurance that genetically engineered (GE) crops are the answer to pesky pest problems, corn rootworm is now turning into a nightmare for America's agricultural biotech companies.

These insects have developed resistance to an inserted gene in the genetically altered corn crop that is designed to kill them.

In a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 22 of the nation's top experts on corn pests are calling for the agency to take action "with a sense of some urgency."[1]

The researchers want seed companies to stop routinely inserting anti-rootworm genes into their corn lines.

Overuse of the gene increases the chances that insects will become resistant to it.

According to the NPR[2]:
"The researchers are calling on farmers in some parts of the country to stop planting corn with anti-rootworm genes altogether, or to plant such corn only intermittently ...

If the recommendations in this letter were, in fact, put into practice, it would compel wrenching changes in the way that major seed companies like Monsanto and DuPont breed and market their corn seed."

1 in 88 Kids Has Autism

One in 88 children in the United States has autism, according to the most recent estimates released today in a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The new estimates, based on data from 2008, show a 23 percent increase in autism diagnoses since the last report. In 2002, 1 in 150 kids were estimated to have autism and in 2006 the prevalence increased to 1 in 110.

The largest increases were seen among Hispanic and black children, the report says.

Autism is much more common in boys, with nearly five times as many boys diagnosed as girls.

The new estimates indicate a growing need for programs serving children with the condition, the report says.

"One thing the data tells us with certainty - there are many children and families who need help," said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC. "We must continue to track autism spectrum disorders because this is the information communities need to guide improvements in services to help children," Frieden said.

Pakistan to 'Punish' Families Who Reject Ineffective and Dangerous Polio Vaccine

Despite powerful mainstream evidence showing that 78% of polio cases in Pakistan are among those vaccinated with the polio vaccine, and even the fact that the polio vaccine is now the leading cause of polio paralysis, Pakistan is now moving to slam parents of non-vaccinated children with fees and school bans. The country has been battling the disease, which has been running rampant among those vaccinated against the condition for quite some time, even prompting potential travel restrictions until the epidemic is dealt with.

While attributing the spread and outbreak to unvaccinated children, and demonizing their parents for making such an 'irresponsible' choice, mainstream public statistics have shown that even those who have been administered polio drops on several occasions were still developing the disease. According to the National Institute of Health, whose polio action group compiled the data in the report, 107 polio-affected children out of the 136 total patients had been given the polio drops under a prescribed schedule - doctor approved.

What's more, World Health Organization states that Pakistan - despite the large percentage of prescribed vaccination - had the highest number of polio cases in a decade. But perhaps most shocking of them all is a report by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that shows it is possible that these children are developing polio from the vaccine itself. The report states:
From 1980 through 1999, there were 162 confirmed cases of paralytic polio cases reported. Of the 162 cases, eight cases were acquired outside the United States and imported. The last imported case caused by wild poliovirus into the United States was reported in 1993. The remaining 154 cases were vaccine-associated paralytic polio (VAPP) caused by live oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV)... there is no clinical difference between paralytic polio caused by wild poliovirus, OPV, or VDPV.

Gulf War Illness and Oil Spill Illness Symptoms Are 'Identical' Says Doctor Who is Detoxing Patients

Image
Raceland, Louisiana - A bayou detoxification program is helping ill coastal residents, many of whom lack health insurance nearly 2 years after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. By most accounts the treatments have helped, and thanks to donors they are free.

Michael Robichaux, an ear, nose and throat specialist, former state senator, and self-described "populist doctor" is running the clinic with chemical detox veteran Jim Woodworth of New York. Woodworth has provided the clinic with staff and funding.

Robichaux, 65, told Courthouse News in an interview that identifying illness from chemical exposure is difficult: "Nothing shows up on blood work. Nothing shows up on brain scans, nothing shows up on MRIs, anything."

Robichaux said what he is seeing appears identical to the reports of symptoms still haunting veterans exposed to toxic chemicals during the first Gulf War.

"Identical - they are identical problems," Robichaux said, picking up a 2008 report on Gulf War illness. "The symptoms are coming from different chemicals, causing the same problems: 'Association with diverse biological alterations that most prominently affects the brain and nervous system,' - exactly what I'm seeing. 'Not explained by routine medical evaluations ... symptoms that typically include a combination of memory and concentration problems, persistent headaches, fatigue and widespread pain.'

Mercury exposure linked to ramp up of thyroid antibody, autoimmune diseases.

Levels of mercury exposure in the United States
Women with high mercury exposures are more than twice as likely to have higher levels of antibodies that are associated with autoimmune disorders.

A large study of women in the United States indicates a link between mercury exposure and elevated levels of a thyroid antibody that is often higher in women with autoimmune diseases, such as arthritis and lupus.

The findings may be the first evidence that mercury exposure in U.S. women affects the immune system through the thyroid. Whether these changes in the immune system lead to thyroid or general health problems is not known.

The results are in line with previous human studies that show links between mercury and autoimmune disease. Other studies with job related - as well as dietary - mercury exposures find associations with changes to immune system antibodies, as this new study does.

The Wheat Lobby Smokescreen

Image
The Wheat Lobby has been busy.

The Grain Foods Foundation, the Whole Grain Council, and other lobby/trade groups for the wheat industry are in panic mode. After all, a recent 4.5% reduction in bread sales for the year were just reported. While 4.5% is not a big percentage, it is a percentage of a huge number. This is big. Food Business News comments:
According to SymphonyIRI Group (a Chicago-based market research firm), unit sales of fresh bread declined 4.5% in the 52 weeks ended Jan. 22 [2012] . . . The one-year volume decline likely was the steepest in the history of sliced bread. [Emphasis mine.]
So the Wheat Lobby and trade groups have been organizing behind several counterarguments to maintain the "healthy whole grain" franchise, including:
"Wheat is not genetically-modified."
Dr. Glenn Gaesser of the Grain Foods Foundation recently offered this "counterargument" on a TV interview I did. This statement has also cropped up a number of times in various articles and reports that aim to counter the claims I am making, suggesting that it is part of a concerted, planned defense.

High-Fat Diet May Cause Less Weight Gain, New Brain Cell Growth

Image

Scientists gave mice a high fat diet, after which, the mice showed growth of new brain cells and less weight gain.

"We really don't understand the function of these neurons in the normal brain," study researcher Seth Blackshaw, an associate professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, told LiveScience.

Prof. Blackshaw said the growth of new brain cells has yet to be explained, but initial data makes interesting implications.

"Our data suggests that these neurons may have an important role in regulating feeding."
