Taking fake food to another level: New startup reveals lab-grown pork belly and bacon strips

In what could be a starting gun for the commercialization of the cell-based meat business, upstart cultivated meat company Higher Steaks said it has managed to produce samples of its first products — bacon strips and pork belly made in a lab from cellular material.

With the revelation, Higher Steaks, a bootstrapped Cambridge, U.K.-based company, leapfrogs into a competitive position with a number of far larger companies that have raised far more capital.

"There's still a lot of work until it's commercial," said Higher Steaks chief executive Benjamina Bollag, "but the revelation of a pork belly product that's made from 50% cultivated cells and a bacon product which contains 70% meat grown from a cell material in a laboratory is something of a milestone for the industry."

Vaccine for thee but not for me? Here's why rushed shots shouldn't be trusted

Covid-19 vaccine
© Reuters / Dado Ruvic
I have said this since day one! It is inevitable you'll have those who refuse to take the vaccine, even though President Trump has been promoting one that's on its way and would likely hit the stage before the end of the year.

What will happen after that vaccine has been cleared? Will the powers-that-be force you to accept it, otherwise, you can't come back to work, your kids can't set foot in school? Will businesses refuse patrons entrance because they're not vaccinated? Just imagine the upcoming lawsuits - which is probably why Senate leader Mitch McConnell wants to write in legislation exempting businesses from lawsuits.

Developing any type of vaccine requires meticulous, methodical research, and the willingness to scrap ideas that don't pan out and start over again from scratch. I don't see that happening, with the pressure to produce a vaccine amid a pandemic as devastating to all aspects of life as this one. And with several companies and groups trying to be the first to get a vaccine to market, I'm afraid the company that receives the approval may be the one with the best political connections, not the best and safest vaccine. Considering the number of post-market drug recalls and withdrawals in the past few years, the US' Food and Drug Administration doesn't have the best track record on vetting the research.

How viruses and bacteria balance each other in the gut microbiome

The adage 'all things in moderation' applies not to just to food and drink, but also to the legions of bacteria inside our guts helping us digest that food and drink. It turns out the rule may also extend to the lesser understood bacteriophages, which are viruses that infect the bacteria living inside us.

Like Russian nesting dolls, our bodies host close to 100 trillion bacterial cells that make up our microbiomes — and those bacterial cells have their own inhabitants.

"We're appreciating more and more that the most abundant microbial entities in the human gut are actually viruses," says Eric Martens, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Michigan's Medical School.

Objective:Health - Operation 'Warped' Speed - These People Are Crazy!

O:H header
On this episode of Objective:Health, we talk more about the latest corona-craziness. President Trump announced a plan to have a Covid-19 vaccine available by the end of 2020. Dubbed 'Operation Warp Speed', the details of the plan seem to come straight out of the film Idiocracy.

Heading the operation, for instance, is GlaxoSmithKline vaccine chairman Moncef Slaoui, a man who oversaw the Pandemrix vaccine for swine flu in 2009 which resulted in over a thousand recipients getting brain damage. And remember that GSK has the distinction of paying the largest fine ever paid by a pharmaceutical company at $3 billion back in 2012 for covering up the deadly side effects of the diabetes drug Avandia.

Combine this with the fact that fastest ever vaccine development currently is four years, and the development of a coronavirus vaccine, while attempted many times, has never been successful (often with disasterous results) and you can see why an estimated one third of Americans are not willng to take the Covid-19 vaccine if and when it becomes available. These people are insane, and anyone willing to put their lives, and those of their families, in their hands are either ignorant or equally insane themselves.

Join us on this episode of Objective:Health as we look into the crazy details of Operation Warp(ed) Speed.

Russian government recommended banning Wi-Fi and cell phones in primary schools

kids on cellphones
On July 17th, 2020, the Russian Ministry of Health published recommendations to schools to ban the use of Wi-Fi and cell phones in elementary schools. The Medical Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, prepared the recommendations together with the Russian Ministry of Health.

The information was provided to Children's Health Defense by Professor Oleg Grigoriev, Dr.Sc, PhD, the Chairman for the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection. Professor Grigoriev has been outspoken about the harms of wireless technology and has been leading the recent initiatives by the Russian government to protect children from harm. He also tweeted about the news.

Comment: It's amazing what countries can achieve when they actually care about, and take action towards, the health of their younger generations. It's almost as if Russians are invested in the well-being of their children. What a backward culture!

White flour products and rice rot teeth, New Zealand's largest child study reveals

New research reveals a strong link between refined starch foods - like rice or white bread - and rotting teeth.
A child who brushes their teeth after every meal and doesn't consume a lot of sugar might still get rotten teeth. But why?

For decades this has baffled parents who thought they were doing all they could to protect their children's teeth.

Today, research has uncovered some answers after the University of Auckland and Starship Children's Hospital examined information collected by the country's largest longitudinal study of child development, Growing Up in New Zealand.

It turns out refined starches - such as white bread, rice, noodles and some breakfast cereals - can be just as damaging for children's teeth.

Blood iron levels are a possible key to slowing ageing, gene study shows

Genes linked to ageing that could help explain why some people age at different rates to others have been identified by scientists.

The international study using genetic data from more than a million people suggests that maintaining healthy levels of iron in the blood could be a key to ageing better and living longer.

The findings could accelerate the development of drugs to reduce age-related diseases, extend healthy years of life and increase the chances of living to old age free of disease, the researchers say.

Scientists from the University of Edinburgh and the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing in Germany focused on three measures linked to biological ageing - lifespan, years of life lived free of disease (healthspan), and being extremely long-lived (longevity).

The T cells, along with antibodies, are an integral part of the human immune response against viral infections due to their ability to directly target and kill infected cells. A Singapore study has uncovered the presence of virus-specific T cell immunity in people who recovered from COVID-19 and SARS, as well as some healthy study subjects who had never been infected by either virus.

The study by scientists from Duke-NUS Medical School, in close collaboration with the National University of Singapore's (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, (YLLSM), Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) was published in Nature. The findings suggest infection and exposure to coronaviruses induces long-lasting memory T cells, which could help in the management of the current pandemic and in vaccine development against COVID-19.

New studies show glyphosate causes reproductive health damage

ovary
Five peer-reviewed animal studies from the U.S. and Argentina released over the last two weeks have focused minds on the infertility crisis being caused by glyphosate-based herbicides.

In stunning revelations from a study on female mice from the Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University it was revealed that ovarian weight and follicle number were altered at a glyphosate dose level of 2 mg/kg and that chronic low-level exposure to glyphosate altered the ovarian proteome, which could ultimately impact ovarian function.

The dose levels used in this study were low compared to most previous studies and the highest dose of 2 mg/kg is only just above the dose considered safe by the U.S. government (1.75 mg/kg bw/day). Such a dose should show no damaging effects on health, as the official 'safe' level is set by reducing a dose that shows health damage by one hundred-fold.

Objective:Health - The Future of Food - Controlling the Population Through What We Eat

O:H header
Diving deeper into the swamp that is the future of food from last week, this week we look into the issue of food being used as a weapon for control over the population. Corporate agriculture, real and manipulated food shortages, inflation, chemical food systems, genetic modification, fake foods - all of these and more are used as a means of ultimately controlling the populace.

Is there an escape? Can we still have a say in what we eat in a future food system dominated by a handful of corporations who control and track all food from the seed stage to the final sale? Will we still be able to grow food for ourselves and our families and wider communities? Will food freedom be a thing of the past?

Join us on this episode of Objective:Health as we look into the scary future of the human food system.
