CDC investigates 2 deaths, 2 illnesses from rare bacterial disease

Four people in the U.S. have mysteriously fallen ill with a rare and sometimes deadly bacterial disease that's usually seen only in other countries with tropical climates, according to health officials. Yet none of these patients had traveled outside the country.

The four cases, which were identified between March and July, occurred in Georgia, Kansas, Texas and Minnesota, according to a statement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Two of the patients died and two were hospitalized for long periods of time. The first death occurred in Kansas in March, and the second death occurred last month in Georgia.

The patients were all diagnosed with melioidosis, a disease caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. The bacteria grows in tropical climates, and it is most commonly seen in Southeast Asia and northern Australia. The only places in the U.S. where this bacterium is naturally found are Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to the CDC.

The risk of suffering a breakthrough COVID-19 infection with the delta variant after being fully vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine may be much lower than the risk for those who received the Pfizer vaccine, according to a new Mayo Clinic study that is awaiting a full review.

The study found that in July in Florida, where COVID cases are at an all-time high and the delta variant is prevalent, the risk of a breakthrough case was 60% lower for Moderna recipients as compared to Pfizer recipients.

A new study found that the most educated are the least likely to get jabbed.

There has been much debate over how to get the unvaccinated to get their jabs — shame them, bribe them persuade them, or treat them as victims of mis- and disinformation campaigns — but who, exactly, are these people?

Most of the coverage would have you believe that the surge in cases is primarily down to less educated, 'brainwashed' Trump supporters who don't want to take the vaccine. This may be partially true: the areas in which the delta variant is surging coincide with the sections of red America in which vaccination rates are lowest.

But according to a new paper by researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, this does not paint the full picture. The researchers analysed more than 5 million survey responses by a range of different demographic details, and classed those people who would "probably" or "definitely" not choose to get vaccinated as "vaccine hesitant."

Comment: These results are surprising, but not for the reasons the author likely believes them to be. Generally, the more "educated" a person is, the more they have been exposed to the authoritarian programming that infests higher education institutions and therefore, the more likely they would be to believe the mainstream directives on Covid vaccination. That Ph.D.s are more likely to be vaccine hesitant bucks this trend (but it seems to be consistent up to the level of Masters). What is it about a Ph.D. level education that seems to rekindle the ability to think?

Children and teens obtain two-thirds of their calories from ultra-processed foods, a new study has found.

More than two-thirds of calories consumed by children and teens in the United States come from ultra-processed foods, a study published Tuesday by JAMA found.

This is up from just over 60% two decades ago, the data showed.

Ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat meals including takeout foods, as well as frozen pizza and burgers, accounted for 11% of caloric intake among those age 2 to 19 in 2018, up from 2% in 1999, the researchers said.

Comment: The most surprising thing about the above article is that they didn't mention saturated fat as a 'bad guy' component of ultraprocessed foods. Are we seeing some progress in nutritional reporting?

Back on May 14th, 18 scientists wrote a letter to Science calling for a new investigation into the origins of COVID-19. Among their number was a gentleman named Ralph Baric, one of the world's leading coronavirus experts.

Baric has been the subject of controversy over the last few months, given that he previously developed a method for engineering bat coronaviruses, and then taught that method to Dr Shi (the "Batwoman") at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

In a recent interview with the MIT Technology Review, he divulges some interesting details about how researchers work with coronaviruses in the lab, as well as how they should do such work.

Comment: Contrary to what the doctor above has asserted, there is a great deal of evidence pointing to the possibility (indeed, likelihood) that the Coronavirus was engineered by human intervention.

We're publishing an important piece today by Anthony Brookes, a Professor of Genomics and Health Data Science at the University of Leicester, in which he explains why the SARS-CoV-2 virus spreads across different populations in waves separated by three or four months. His theory is similar to that put forward by Dr Will Jones, namely, that the overall immunity levels in most populations are quite high, but need to be 'topped up' each time a new variant appears, causing infections to rise and then fall. Importantly, the decline in infections has little or nothing to do with non-pharmaceutical interventions - which is why daily cases started to decline before the second and third lockdowns were imposed in the U.K. and why the easing of restrictions on July 19th hasn't caused an 'exit wave' - or the vaccine roll-out, since vaccines don't appear to have much impact on infection or transmission.

The best thing you can do to fight Covid-19 might be just to become less fat.

The media, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and World Health Organization (all really covering themselves in glory over the past year) have declared the variants of Covid-19 a veritable alphabet soup. Of course, we've got Delta from India, which the CDC labeled "a variant of concern" in June, and which we've heard lots about since. But there are other "of concern" viral pasta bits, too, from all over the world. There's Alpha, which first appeared in Great Britain. And there's Beta, which popped up in South Africa. Then there are not one but two Epsilon variants, spotted first in the U.S. Plus there's a Gamma found in Brazil.

Served this dish it is time to stop eating. Here's a slogan, some advice, and I plan to take it, too: Lose 15 pounds to slow the spread. By now we've all seen reports of breakthrough cases, where fully vaccinated people not only test positive for Covid-19 but experience substantial symptoms. The present and the future is beginning to look like ever-multiplying variants of the virus, many of them more contagious, with some vaccine-resistant. This seems to be the natural outcome of current selection pressures.

Comment: While it's still a very low percentage of the population that is at risk of death due to Covid, getting oneself healthier is a good strategy overall and could come in handy down the pipeline, when who knows what sort of mutant viral monster may be lurking - likely something much deadlier than Covid!

Physicians who intentionally spread misinformation or disinformation about the COVID-19 vaccines could be disciplined by state medical boards and may have their licenses suspended or taken away, said the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB).

Due "to a dramatic increase in the dissemination of COVID-19 vaccine misinformation and disinformation by physicians and other health care professionals on social media platforms, online and in the media," the FSMB, a national nonprofit representing medical boards that license and discipline allopathic and osteopathic physicians, issued the following statement:

FSMB has not yet formally defined "misinformation" or "disinformation" in its policy, but the organization's ethics committee is studying the issues of physician misinformation and disinformation and plans to provide more guidance at a later date, an FSMB spokesperson said in an emailed statement to Becker's.

"However, we currently view misinformation as sharing or distributing verifiably false information," the spokesperson said. "We define disinformation as sharing or distributing information that the distributor knows is false."

While FSMB has not formed a recommendation yet for the definitions of misinformation and disinformation, state and territorial medical boards may use various terms, such as "professional misconduct" or "ethics violation," in their own procedures to address concerns surrounding misinformation and disinformation, FSMB said.
