The boy was swimming in the Pilchuck River with his grandmother around 11 a.m. when the otter attacked, said Capt. Alan Myers with the state Department of Fish & Wildlife. When the grandmother attempted to fend off the otter, the animal attacked her, as well.
Based on initial reports, the boy likely needs stitches and his grandmother has a severe eye injury, Myers said. Names, ages and current conditions of the boy and grandmother were not immediately available. The otter had not been caught as of Thursday evening. A trapper was unable to locate a den in the area where the attack happened.
At least four men have been killed after a flash flood swept through a village festival in Italy.
As many as 20 people are thought to have also been injured when a severe thunderstorm struck the town of Refrontolo, some 40 miles north of Venice, on Saturday evening.
The storm created a torrent of water and mud that swept away cars and knocked down trees in the Veneto region, according to the Associated Press.
It is understood the men died after they were swept into a nearby river. The Daily Mail reported around 200 people had taken shelter under a tent when the storm hit without warning.
A bufflehead was reported on Pleasant Lake in New London on July 25.
It's a small duck, rarely seen in the state, whose normal range is in the Arctic and Canada.
The males are mostly white with a black puffy head, while the female is dark with a white spot behind the eye.
Rest of report here.
The melon-headed whale was brought to shore Friday morning after it was spotted Thursday.
Initially, state officials reported two whales, swimming in circles in waters off Kailua beach.
Experts thought there were two whales because several fins were sticking out of the water, but on Friday morning, they discovered it was only one melon-headed whale in distress.
"So if you were looking from far away, it was the fin and the fluke and it looked like two dorsal fins, but it was just the whale on its side," said David Schofield with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The 9-foot-long adult female whale died about 30 minutes before it was taken to shore. It weight about 500 pounds.
"Even though they're common to these waters, how uncommon is it to have it so close to shore?" KHON2 asked.
"These are deeper water animals, so the point you're making is a good one, is that when they come in shore, that tells us there's something wrong," Schofield said.
Officials believe the whale had been swimming on its side for at least 16 hours and was located about 300 yards offshore.
By the time experts got to it Friday morning, the whale had died.
But the hail storm that happened Friday evening was like nothing many had ever seen before.
The CBS 58 Newsroom received several calls from viewers in shock.
CBS 58 viewer Joe James became a reporter of sorts and started rolling video and narrating the amazing sight outside his car window as he drove along Racine Avenue between Waukesha and Muskego.
"It was just 90 degrees earlier today," he declared. "Amazing hail storm."
Others in Ozaukee County said drivers pulled alongside the road they were so startled by the pounding of the hail stones.
Another resident in New Berlin said the hail had done major damage to her backyard, bringing down tree limbs everywhere she looked.
"You guys should be out here," she urged. "This is a big deal."

Rescuers carry an injuried child on a stretcher after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit the area in Ludian county in Zhaotong, southwest China's Yunnan province on August 3, 2014.
The US Geological Survey has estimated the quake at 6.1 on the Richter scale, while previously reporting the strikes measuring 6.3. At the same time, the China Earthquake Networks Center said the magnitude of the quake was 6.5.
The quake struck 11 kilometers west-northwest of the town of Wenping at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers, according to USGS. Chinese state television said the epicenter of the quake was in Yunnan province's Ludian county.
"I felt a strong jolt on my fifth-floor home and some small objects in my home fell off the shelves," a resident in the county seat of Ludian told Xinhua.
The quake toppled and cracked apart buildings, forcing people to rush into the streets, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported. The administration of the affected Yunnan province sent a 30-member team to the quake's epicenter.

Thousands of jellyfish-like creatures have washed ashore in at least two places along the Bay Area shoreline. It's very unusual for this time of year.
Beach-goers were watching their steps Tuesday as they walked on the sand at San Francisco's Ocean Beach. They're worried about the blue sea creatures scattered on the sand that washed ashore on Monday.
One ABC7 News viewer sent in photos, calling the site bizarre. California Academy of Sciences spokesperson Rich Mooi said it's not. "They are not dangerous at all," he said.
