A rumbling volcano in western Indonesia on Sunday unleashed an avalanche of scorching clouds down its slopes.

Authorities are closely monitoring Mount Sinabung on Sumatra, one of Indonesia's main islands, after sensors picked up increasing activity in past weeks.

The volcano in North Sumatra province was shooting smoke and ash more than 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) into the air on Sunday morning, and hot ash clouds traveled 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) southeast, Indonesias Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center said.

Villagers were advised to stay 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) from the craters mouth and should be aware of the peril of lava, the agency said. Air travel was not impacted by the ash so far, the Transport Ministry said.

Lightning bolt kills 2, injures 28 in Nwoya, Uganda

Two people have died and 28 others were injured after they were struck by lightning on Saturday afternoon at Patira West Village, Purongo Sub County in Nwoya District during a funeral service.

The deceased Okello Lamemba, 50, a produce dealer at Olwiyo trading centre and one other male adult whose identity could not be established by press time, died from Anaka Hospital where they had been rushed.

According to Mr Ben Okot, LCIII Chairperson of Purongo Sub County who was at the burial ground, the victims were under a tent at the funeral.

Mr Okot said those that sustained injuries are currently receiving medication at Anaka Hospital.

Comment: Also recently a strike killed 2 teenagers in Karachi, Pakistan on August 21.

Lightning-sparked wildfires in California have exploded in size to become some of the largest in state history, forcing thousands to flee and destroying hundreds of homes.

More than 12,000 firefighters assisted by helicopters and air tankers continue to battle wildfires throughout northern California.

Three groups of fires, called complexes, are burning north, east and south of San Francisco and have together scorched 991 square miles, destroyed more than 500 structures and killed five people.

At least 100,000 people are under evacuation orders.

The number of firefighters assigned to the sprawling LNU Complex - a cluster of blazes burning in the heart of wine country north of San Francisco - doubled to more than 1,000 firefighters Friday, Cal Fire Division Chief Ben Nicholls said.

The Leshan Giant Buddha in Sichuan province has come under threat from rising floodwaters.

More than 100,000 Chinese were evacuated on Tuesday because of floods on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, which also threatened a 1,200-year-old Unesco World Heritage Site.

Staff, police and volunteers used sandbags to try to protect the 71 metre (233 feet) Leshan Giant Buddha in southwest China's Sichuan province, as muddy floodwater rose over its toes for the first time since 1949, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Sichuan, through which the Yangtze flows, raised its emergency response to the maximum level on Tuesday to cope with a new round of torrential rainfall.

The number of victims of floods and heavy rains in Sudan has risen to 74, the country's Interior Ministry said on Friday.

Snowstorms and frosts in the high areas of the Argentine Patagonia Rio Negro province could cause the death of 70% of the flock, according to estimates from the provincial Livestock Secretariat, Tabaré Bassi.

Together with technicians from the Agriculture Technology Institute, INTA, officials made a first estimate of losses in the snow covered highlands next to the cordillera, but will have to wait until October to have a more exact estimate. "Any how we are talking of at least 100,000 sheep and 5,000 cattle".

Bassi called for prudence in assessing the dimension of the losses, but did admit that the victims of the intense snow fall followed by frosts are mostly small farmers, with flocks no larger than 250 head, "which makes it a serious survival challenge".

A mother of two has died of her injuries after she was attacked by a bear in a forest north of Buffalo Narrows yesterday.

Around 7:15 p.m. on August 20, police received a report an adult man, a 44-year-old woman and two children under the age of 10 were camping when a black bear attacked the female. No one else was injured.

According to a release from RCMP, the woman's injuries were significant. Medical personnel pronounced her deceased at Buffalo Narrows after she was airlifted from the area where the attack occurred.

Ski areas in Australia have reported more than 60cm (two feet) of snowfall over the past three days.

A super storm has been dumping on the country's ski slopes since Wednesday, with increasing intensity in terms of the amount of snow falling every 24 hours.

With the coronavirus pandemic locking down the state of Victoria and the ski areas there, most of the resorts open are in New South Wales. They include Perisher, and Thredbo (pictured today) which both reported 25cm of snowfall in the last 24 hours having reported 10cm and 15cm, on earlier days.
