6 dead and cities left without electricity as storm sweeps through Belarus

vvvvvvvv
The emergencies ministry in Belarus said Wednesday that six people died in a heavy weekend storm that swept through much of the country, and officials said that some cities are still experiencing problems with water and electricity.

The ministry reported that 330 cities and villages were damaged in Sunday's storm in the Brest, Gomel and Mogilev regions in the country's south. Video footage from the ministry shows fallen trees, wrecked cars and houses without roofs.

The worst-hit city, Mazyr, home to a major oil refinery, remains without electricity in some areas.

"We have never encountered anything like this, when the energy system lost all the power generating and supplying all lines in the Mazyr region and surrounding areas," said Deputy Prime Minister Anatoly Sivak.

"The wind was abnormally strong and this led to the destruction of high-voltage lines," Sivak added.

A small town in China's Henan province experienced an unprecedented deluge as it received nearly a year's worth of rain in just 24 hours.

The extreme weather event, part of a shifting pattern of storms moving from southern China to central and northern provinces, has put local authorities on high alert.

Dafengying, a town within the city limits of Nanyang, recorded a staggering 606.7mm (24 inches) of rainfall in a single day, as reported by national weather forecasters. This amount nearly matches the area's average annual rainfall of 800mm, highlighting the extraordinary nature of the event.

Tornado-like cloud spotted over Letterkenny, Ireland

MMMMM
A video capturing a tornado-like cloud over Letterkenny has amassed nearly 20,000 views online.

Donegal Weather Channel posted the video - which was captured by Seamus Price - of the dark column-shaped cloud on X (formerly Twitter) earlier today (July 16).

Although the strangely shaped cloud looks like a tornado, it is actually a funnel cloud.

According to the Met Office, a funnel cloud only becomes a tornado when it reaches the earth's surface, or if it reaches a body of water it becomes a 'waterspout'.

The funnel cloud is formed when the wind draws in cloud droplets, making a region of intense low pressure visible.

Thunderstorms with heavy rains and tornadoes rattled the Chicago area and elsewhere in the Midwest, overtopping a dam Tuesday in southern Illinois, cutting power to hundreds of thousands, and even sending weather forecasters scrambling for safety. A woman in Indiana died after a tree fell onto a home.

Water overtopped a dam near Nashville, Illinois, sending first responders to the flooded area to make sure everyone got out safely, officials said. There were no reports of injuries in the community of 3,000 southeast of St. Louis, but crews were sent to a home where a woman reported water up to her waist, said Alex Haglund, a spokesperson for the Washington County Emergency Management Agency.

Earlier, the Washington County Emergency Management Agency EMA advised residents south of the Nashville City Reservoir, located outside St. Louis, Missouri, to evacuate their homes immediately. Residents were told the community center in Nashville was open for shelter.

Alligator attacks 9-year-old boy in Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana

mmmmmmm
A 9-year-old boy sustained a laceration and puncture wounds to his left leg in an alligator attack Sunday evening while swimming with family in Lake Pontchartrain, according to the New Orleans Fire Department.

Capt. Stefan Schmidt of Engine 13, who rendered aid along with personnel from New Orleans Emergency Medical Services, credited the boy's father for saving his life.

"I really feel he would have pulled him under, drowned the kid and killed him," Schmidt said of an alligator he estimated at 6 feet in length. "The dad jumped on the gator and was literally beating it, and it let go of his son."

The family was swimming at dusk near the mouth of Bayou St. John where it meets Lake Pontchartrain — a popular spot to cool off due to the nearby sandbar, according to the New Orleans Fire Department. Swimmers spotted the gator swimming toward the boy and yelled to warn him.

But the child thought people were joking. His injury was "pretty bad," said Schmidt, who along with EMS workers helped wrap the boy's leg before transporting him to a hospital.
