Videos of the incident recorded by residents made its rounds on social media.
One video showed the landspout swirling in the middle of a paddy field, while villagers prayed from a distance.
The epicenter, with a depth of 226.08 km, was initially determined to be at 19.0408 degrees south latitude and 169.4528 degrees east longitude.
About 12 hours earlier, a smaller magnitude 4.5 tremor hit roughly 91 km off Vanuatu's coast.
No tsunami warning has been issued for either incident so far.
A tornado was filmed near Aspiran, Paulhan or Pézenas. The videos have been relayed on social networks.
In addition, four departments were placed on rain-flood orange alert by Météo France this Sunday morning: Ardèche, Haute-Loire, Loire and Rhône.

Officials said a rescue operation was launched after the accident happened late on Saturday evening.
Three injured were rushed to a nearby hospital where they succumbed during the night and the bodies of five others were recovered on Sunday morning, they added.
"The incident happened on Saturday late evening near Chandi Ka Dhar area of the district. In the initial Investigations, it was found that the deceased, whose identities are yet to be ascertained, were returning from the Kedarnath shrine," Rudraprayag's district magistrate Mangesh Gildiyal said.
Gildiyal said they were not sure how many people were travelling in these vehicles as the bodies of the victims were found scattered along with the vehicles.

The sighting of a Yellow-browed Warbler in Saanich is the first time the bird has been seen in Canada.
Upwards of 50 people flocked to the park with binoculars around their necks and telephoto lenses at the ready for a shot of the yellow-browed warbler. Some came from the Lower Mainland, Washington State and even California, though none travelled quite as far as the bird, which is a migrant from Asia.
The migratory warbler typically spends its winters in the tropical climates of South Asia and Southeast Asia, and sometimes in Western Europe.
The twister started on land near Shelton traveling more than a half mile before moving over Pickering Passage and becoming a waterspout.
It dissipated shortly after moving over the water.
The Weather Service completed a survey of the area on Saturday before release its findings.
The tornado cut a path about 90 yards wide and was on the ground for approximately five minutes.

A tornado touched down near Seminole, Fla., about 15 miles west of St. Petersburg, around 9:20 p.m. on Friday, the National Weather Service said. A mobile home park was damaged and no injuries were reported, it said.
Another tornado, with winds up to 120 m.p.h., touched down in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, around 11:30 p.m. on Friday and crossed into neighboring Polk County, where it damaged at least 50 homes and businesses, the Weather Service said.
For about 45 minutes, the tornado tore through the county, Paul Womble, the director of Polk County Emergency Management, said on Saturday.
"We were lucky and very blessed to not have any injuries," he said.
The tornado overturned an 18-wheel vehicle onto a sport utility vehicle. The occupants of both vehicles escaped injury, The Tampa Bay Times reported. It also caused severe damage to a middle school, prompting administrators to cancel classes for Monday and Tuesday.
