Remarkable images show dozens of tourists standing around to watch the spectacle in the western Indonesian province
The incredible pictures show the Kawah Ijen volcano in East Java, Indonesia shooting 16-foot-high bright blue beams into the sky in a remarkable display.
According to experts the blue glow isn't actually from the lava, which is a similar colour to most other volcanoes, but from the gas emitted from the mountain.

Comment: One needs to be sceptical of the temperatures given because it has been shown time and again these weather stations are located near artificial heat sources (from airport runways to ice cream vans) and some measurements are made from the ground while others are estimates. What is clear is that the seasons are increasingly erratic and extreme weather events are on the rise, from epic flooding, unexpected frosts, record breaking snow to extended drought and heatwaves. The overall trend, however, is toward a rapidly cooling planet:
- Heat wave breaks records in Iran, across the Caucasus
- Snow follows record breaking May heatwave in northern Sweden
- Heatwaves, storms, wildfires and droughts: Experts issue warnings over extreme weather in Europe this summer
- 'Biggest fire in living memory': Moorland blaze reignites and rages for days in Saddleworth, UK
