The U.S. Geological Survey says a strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.5 has struck in northern Peru.

The earthquake took place at 5:52 a.m. Sunday local time (10:52 GMT).

While it was extremely strong, it was relatively deep, — measured at 112 kilometers — which usually reduces damage and casualties.

The epicentre was 42 kilometers (26 miles) north northwest of the coastal city of Barranca.

A 34-year-old man has died overnight in hospital after being struck by lightning earlier last week, while working on a mango farm in Berry Springs.

NT WorkSafe said in statement "preliminary findings indicate three men were working from the back of a trailer being towed by a tractor on a mango farm when lightning struck a nearby tree."

"It appears the lightning has arced from the tree towards the trailer, injuring three workers."

The trio was taken to hospital.

Germenino De Deus, 34, was admitted to the intensive care unit at Royal Darwin Hospital and on Saturday died from his injuries.

Three people have died after being hit by falling trees as Storm Arwen brought winds of almost 100mph to parts of the UK overnight.

A headteacher in Northern Ireland died after a tree fell on his car, another man was hit by a falling tree in Cumbria, and a third died after his car was hit in Aberdeenshire.

Tens of thousands of homes have been left without power as the storm lashed electricity lines and caused significant travel disruption across the country.

High winds, rain and snow brought "damaging gusts" across a wide swathe of the UK overnight, according to the Met Office.

The scene in an Msida street on Thursday morning.
Flash floods carried away cars, collapsed walls and trapped motorists in their submerged vehicles after a month's worth of rain fell in a matter of hours on Thursday.

Police and army units were deployed as roads turned into rivers, leading to multiple water rescues and road closures throughout the day.

An overwhelmed Civil Protection Department appealed for people to avoid valleys and areas close to the sea. There were no reports of fatalities.

But two of their own officers had to be rescued by an Armed Forces of Malta helicopter as they got into difficulty rescuing an elderly man trapped in his car in Burmarrad. All three were airlifted to safety.
