Heavy rains in Bandung, West Java and its surrounding areas on Saturday night caused the dam holding the Cinambo River in Pasar Jati, Bandung regency to burst, resulting in flooding that claimed three lives.

The flooding hit residential areas in Cigending subdistrict, Ujungberung district and several houses in the Endah regency complex, where eight people were dragged away by the strong currents.

The Bandung search and rescue (SAR) office said three people, including a baby, had been declared dead, while five people had been rescued.

The victims were identified as Phida, 40, Hani, 25 and Raifan, 1.

"The joint SAR team has moved all residents affected by the flooding to a safer location," Bandung SAR spokesperson Joshua Banjarnahor said on Sunday.

The Queensland government has announced an inquiry into the historic flooding in Townsville, as evidence mounts that local authorities failed to anticipate the extreme nature of the recent record rainfall.

The independent inquiry will look into "key preparedness and response elements" to the storms that dumped more than one metre of rain on Townsville in less than a week.

In the west of the state, graziers have been confronted with scenes described by one mayor as "hell", as it became clear up to 300,000 cattle had died in the floods. The premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, said the sight so many cattle that had died agonising deaths made her "sick in the stomach".


Comment: Update: The Guardian reports on the 11th of January:
In north-west Queensland it hadn't rained, any decent rain, for more than five years.

When the downpour finally came last week, graziers were elated. Now it's feared up to 500,000 cattle, mostly from severely drought-stressed herds, have been killed in widespread flood waters.

The full extent of the losses won't be known for weeks; some properties remain underwater and the flood waters are moving south. But the agricultural industry's peak body says the situation has already become "a massive humanitarian crisis", affecting an area twice the size of Victoria.

After a prolonged drought, some rural parts of Queensland received three years' worth of average rainfall in a week.

Severe floods hit the Madinah Region in Saudi Arabia, 08 to 10 February, 2019.
Further severe flooding has affected parts of Saudi Arabia, displacing around 100 people and leaving 2 dead.

Saudi Civil Defence report flooding in Madinah Region from 08 February, 2019. Around 111 people were rescued by Civil Defence teams, many of them from vehicles stranded in flooding wadis. Flooding in the region also caused damage to homes and 14 families (around 100 people) have been displaced.

Civil Defence reported on 08 February that 1 person had died and another was still missing after flooding in the Al-ʿUla governorate of the Madinah Region. Search and rescue operations for the missing person continued and Civil Defence reported late on 10 February that they had found a body near a flooded wadi.

Hello all. I was up late at night and this sound began out of nowhere. It reminded me of the soundtrack of a scary movie. It freaked me out so much I grabbed my phone to record the noise. I begin my video in my room, then go out front to hear the noise better. It seemed to be coming from a few blocks away, so I went back upstairs to put on my shoes and get my keys to drive to see what was making the sound. As soon as I put on my hoodie to leave, the noise stopped. It freaks me out to listen back to the noise. I'm not sure if it's a natural phenomenon or something out of the ordinary (aliens?).

Normally, rivers flow horizontally. Now the water of this river in Babadan Village, Indonesia disappears in a deep sinkhole underground, drying up the stream. Very disturbing, isn't it?

As seen in both videos, the water is vanishing in a deep and probably very large underground hole. Freaky! Hopefully the river will not completely disappear.

The Hawai'i DLNR Division of State Parks reports that for perhaps the first time ever, snow has fallen in a Hawai'i State Park on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019.

Polipoli State Park on Maui is blanketed with snow. It could also be the lowest elevation snow ever recorded in the state.Polipoli is at 6200 feet elevation.

Personnel from numerous DLNR Divisions continue monitoring the impacts of the major winter storm bearing down on Hawai'i.

DLNR Chair Suzanne Case and Sam Lemmo administrator of the DLNR Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands spent the day on Oahu's north shore where there is particular concern about coastal erosion and wave inundation. They watched as the height of coastal waves steadily increased across the day. Case said, "The conditions are impressive but extremely dangerous. We don't know yet the extent of sand loss on north-facing beaches."

A winter storm dumped over 3 feet of snow at some Lake Tahoe ski resorts in 24 hours.

The impressive numbers follow a light dusting Friday night and early Saturday morning.

Here are some snow totals from ski resorts on Lake Tahoe's South Shore and the Incline Village area as of Sunday morning:

Kirkwood Mountain Resort reports 31 inches in 24 hours and a storm total of 35 inches.

Hyena mauls boy to death in Kenya, injures father

A 12-year old boy was on Monday morning mauled to death by a hyena in Leleshwa village Ol Moran area, Laikipia County.

The animal ate the body, leaving only a skeleton during the 5am incident.

The boy's father, who suffered serious injuries while trying to fight off the animal to save their son, is admitted at the Nyahururu County Referral Hospital.

According to Ms Anne Wambui, the Class Two pupil at Mwireri Primary School was preparing for school when the animal attacked.

"The boy's mother was preparing breakfast in the kitchen as the victim and his brother dressed for school when the animal attacked," said Ms Wambui.

"On hearing the commotion, the boy's father rushed to rescue his family from the beast," said Ms Wambui, the boy's aunt.

Heavy snowfall in Galyat breaks 35 years old record
Heavy snowfall on Saturday broke a 35-year record in Galyat as more than 12 feet snowfall was recorded during 20 days of the current winter season.

The heavy snowfall has not only limited tourist movements but also trapped hundreds of thousands of natives in their houses as main Murree road, Ayubia, Khanuspur, Nathiagali and dozens of other link roads are blocked by snow and landslides.

A severe shortage of food items, petrol, oil, firewood, medicines and other necessities of life and days long electricity breakdown pushed the people of Galyat into even deeper trouble where neither district government Abbottabad nor Galyat Development Authority (GDA) tried to lessen the miseries of the people.

Three people died during a landslide that buried them while they were working at a construction site in Maili Mbili area in Kisii.

While confirming the incident, Kisii police commander Martin Kibet stated that "the three had been contracted to expand the water and sewerage systems from Kegati, Kisii, Nyamira to Suneka when the incident occurred at about 4.30 pm on Friday."

"At Maili Mbili area within Bobaracho ward, a landslide occurred and three Kisii male adults namely Stephen Omenya, Robin Ratemo and Joseph Mokaya were completely buried under the soil and died instantly while four others escaped unhurt."
