Four people injured in lightning strikes on Acropolis in Athens

The incident occurred at 4 pm local time as the lightning damaged a lightning rod and hit the booth from where the Acropolis security staff operates, the online news portal Keep Talking Greece reported.

A bolt of lightning struck Acropolis in Athens injuring four people, Greek authorities said on Wednesday. Two female guards and two tourists are among the injured.

The condition of one of the security staff is serious, Greek media reported. However, later in the day, the AP news agency reported citing a culture ministry official that none of the wounded has sustained serious trauma.

Lightning bolt kills 3 people in Sri Lanka

A man and two females have died struck by lightning at in the Chunnakam police division in Jaffna. The incident has taken place around 2.30 pm yesterday.

The three victims, who were engaged in cultivation in Kuppilan South, were returning from work when heavy showers had poured.

The victims had sought shelter in a nearby shed when they were struck by lightning.

The female victims were aged 38 and 55 while the male victim was 49. The victims were residents of Kuppilan area.

The bodies are kept at Jaffna hospital for the post-mortem.

Storm hits Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh
Thunderstorms swept across western India killing at least 35 people and leaving widespread damage, officials said Wednesday.

Strong winds barrelled through Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh states felling walls, trees and electricity lines. The storms have also been blamed for at least 25 deaths in Pakistan this week.

At least 10 people were killed in the desert state of Rajasthan, where a wall of dust swept over several cities. Another 10 were killed in neighbouring Gujarat and 15 in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, state emergency services told AFP.

Officials said victims were hit by lightning, falling trees or electrocuted by power lines.

An eruption was observed on Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture about 6:28 p.m. on April 16, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the first in two and a half years.

From about 1:30 p.m. on April 14, the agency detected volcanic tremors at Mount Aso had begun intensifying and a large volume of volcanic gas was also being emitted.

The alert level for Mount Aso was raised from the lowest 1 to 2, meaning restrictions would be placed on approaching the crater.

Police and emergency services rescued hundreds of people during a storm 13 to 14 April, 2019, which caused major flash flooding in Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost emirate of the United Arab Emirates.

Local media said that Ras Al Khaimah police announced on Monday that the total number of people rescued in the weekend's flooding reached 702, with 20 families provided hotel accommodation after their homes suffered flood damage.

Over 3,000 calls for assistance were made during the storm and hundreds of vehicles have been reportedly damaged. No fatalities have been reported however.

Hailstorm and torrential rainfall hit many parts of Athens on Monday afternoon, as adverse weather conditions continue to affect wide swaths of the country. The nation has experienced inclement, and at times severe, weather for the past week.

The hailstorm affected central parts of the Greek capital, in an event which is very rare for downtown Athenians.

At least 26 killed as torrential rains, windstorm lash Pakistan

At least 26 people were killed and scores of others injured as rains and windstorm wreaked havoc across Pakistan over the last two days.

While there were no official figures regarding rain-related casualties, local media reported on Tuesday that the country's southwestern Balochistan province was worst-hit in the rains where nine people were killed and over 50 others injured, making the provincial disaster management authority issue an alert in the province.

Nine people were killed and scores of others injured in separate rain-triggered accidents in the country's eastern Punjab province while five fatalities were reported in the southern port city of Karachi of south Sindh province where dust storm paralyzed life on Monday.

Three people including a toddler were killed in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
