Scientists detect earthquake swarm at Hawaii volcano

This Aug. 13, 2021 photograph provided by the U.S. Geological Survey shows the crater of the Kilauea volcano south of Honolulu. Geologists on Tuesday, Aug. 24 said they had detected a swarm of earthquakes at the volcano, though it is not erupting.

Geologists on Tuesday said they had detected a swarm of earthquakes at Hawaii's Kilauea volcano, though it is not erupting.

The quakes began overnight and continued into the morning, The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.

More than 140 earthquakes were recorded as of 4:30 a.m. The largest was magnitude 3.3. Most were less than magnitude 1.

A sinkhole has opened in the Third Street Tunnel, which runs under Union Square, just west of the US Capitol building. The tunnel is closed in both directions, as are nearby streets, causing "significant gridlock," DC police say. The cold front brought blizzard conditions to the Barrington overnight.

The cold front brought blizzard conditions to the Barrington overnight.
The rain yesterday brought plenty of snow to the Barrington last night with the strong westerly winds piling up one metre of snow in some places.

The conditions on the Barrington overnight were described as "blizzard like", with the strong winds causing many large trees to fall and residents are busy clearing roads from the damage.

There was an estimated 55 to 60mm of rainfall in the area and many local rivers have risen.

The snow began at approximately 2pm and fell throughout the night, but it is now melting and conditions are icy.

While lock down prevents people from visiting the Tops, it is unlikely the area would have been open due to the damage caused by the high winds.

The heavy showers Jamaica encountered on August 17 prevented the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) from conducting an investigation into a report of juvenile fish, lobsters, crabs, sea cucumbers and other marine species washing up on the Hellshire Fishing Beach in St Catherine.

When The Gleaner team arrived at the location, anxious fisherfolk pointed to sections of the beach where the juvenile fish were dead or dying, and crabs and lobsters crawling out of the sea to die on the shore. Concerned about the threat to their livelihood but confused as to what was causing the fish kill, some of the fishers sought help in getting answers.

"Something in the water killing off everything, and the water stink! We need NEPA to come here and investigate," declared one fisherman. However, that did not happen as the island was already experiencing heavy rains associated with Tropical Storm Grace and the agency did not think it prudent to send out its staff.

Instead, it contacted a sister agency which was closer to the beach and whose staff is equally competent in the marine sciences. However, this option did not pan out as by then, weather conditions had deteriorated and the island was under a hurricane watch.

A humpback whale carcass has washed ashore near Jalama Beach.

Justin Viezbicke with the Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program says access to the whale has been difficult for his team as the carcass has been floating in and out of the water with the tide.

They're hoping to determine a cause of death along with other information on the whale, but don't know when that will be done.

Coyotes are stalking and biting visitors in a popular Vancouver park in record numbers, in a mysterious surge of attacks that is baffling experts and dividing the city.

In the roughly nine months since December 2020, 40 coyote attacks in Stanley Park have been reported, including one last week where a 69-year-old man was bitten on the leg while walking on a trail. None have so far been fatal.

The figure is four times the number of attacks recorded over the last 30 years combined.

"In a normal year, there is no contact between a coyote and a person," said Nadia Xenakis, urban wildlife programmes coordinator with the Stanley Park Ecology Society. Even in years in which some aggression is seen, the behaviour is typically attributed to the animals' breeding season.

Three women working in a paddy field in Jharkhand's Sahibganj district were killed on Tuesday when lightning struck them, an official said.

Four women working in the field near Sakhi Garden under Rajmahal block were hit by lightning and were brought to hospital for treatment by the villagers, where the doctors declared three women dead.

Confirming the incident, Sub-Divisional Officer, Rajmahal, Roshan Sah said that the injured woman has been referred to Sahibganj Hospital for better treatment.

Authorities say a lightning strike killed a man and seriously injured another while they were working on ladders Tuesday morning in Menomonie, Wisconsin.

According to the Dunn County Sheriff's Office, a crew at a construction site reported that two men were down and had possibly been struck by lightning around 11:11 p.m. One of the victims was reportedly not breathing.

When emergency personnel arrived, they found two victims, ages 60 and 20. The 60-year-old was not breathing and was pronounced dead at the scene. The younger victim was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries, the sheriff's office said.

Teams from the Emergencies Ministry (EMERCOM) of Russia are searching for 5 people who were swept away by floods and mudflows in mountainous areas of Dagestan.

Heavy rain affected the republic from 22 to 23 August, 2021. EMERCOM reported flooding damaged hundreds of homes and roads across the districts of Gunibsky, Gergebilsky, Levashinsky, Laksky and Kurakhsky. Damage to a pipeline has left thousands without gas.

Flooding caused severe damage in the community of Urma in Levashinsky District in particular, where at least 1 house was completely destroyed and 600 others damaged.
