Officers were called to the 300 block of Westmoreland Street shortly after 10:30 a.m. on a report that a child was attacked by a pit bull, according to an Akron police media release.
When they arrived, officers found the little girl critically injured.
She was rushed to Children's Hospital, where she died, the release said.

As the cyclone approached, a child who had been swept away by water was found dead, the state news agency said, and another person was missing. Two Asian workers were killed when a hill collapsed on their housing area in an industrial zone, the state news agency reported.
When its eye crossed land, the cyclone was carrying winds of between 120 and 150 km per hour (75-93 mph), Omani authorities said. It was throwing up waves of up to 10 metres (32 feet).

According to a report of 02 October 2021 from India's National Emergency Response Centre (NERC), flooding has affected more than 2.6 million people across the districts of Purba Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Jhargram, Bankura, Purulia, Paschim Bardhaman, Purba Baddhaman, Hooghly, Howrah, Kolkata and Birbhum.
Many of those affected have evacuated their homes. NERC reported that at least 500,000 people displaced and 1,100 emergency relief camps have been set up. Local media reported 11 fatalities since 30 September including 3 in Hooghly and 5 in Bankura. Flooding has also caused extensive damage to crops, in particular rice.
The deceased were known as Sundar Ali Sardar, 65, his grandson Rafiq Sardar, 14 and Mosharraf Hossain, 39.
Upazila project implementation officer Mehedi Hasan Titu said, Sundar Ali and his grandson were struck by lightning when they were working in a paddy field during rain.
Later, locals took them to upazila health complex where duty doctor declared them dead.
Meanwhile, a thunderbolt struck Mosharraf Hossain in the district, leaving him critically injured. Later, he was sent to Jamalpur General Hospital but he died on the way to the hospital.
Upazila health and family planning officer Dr. AM Abu Taher confirmed the matter.
It has been learnt that workers were working at a brick-kiln at Rai Mal Majri village when lightning struck them. Harwinder Singh, the owner of the brick kiln, said he took the injured to the Health Centre after the incident. "It is a very shocking incident. I am trying my best to help the injured," said the owner.
Sukhdev Singh, Station House Officer, Bhadson, said the post-mortem would be conducted and bodies would be handed over to family members. Raj Kumar, state president, Democratic MGNREGA Front, said the government should provide compensation to the family members of the deceased. Besides, the government should ensure proper treatment of the injured worker.
Congress MLA from Nabha Sadhu Singh Dharmsot said, "All the deceased belonged to poor families. I will personally request the state government to provide compensation at the earliest."
"Dust from the storm in the northern part of the province is expected to gradually penetrate into some eastern and central parts of the province, reducing visibility as well as air quality," Mohsen Heydari told state-run ISNA news agency. According to a report, the sandstorm has disrupted traffic on the northern roads of the province, and in particular the Zahedan-Zabul freeway.
