Suoh volcano eruption in Indonesia update - New eruption, 3 powerful explosions occur

Phreatic eruption from Suoh volcano

Without warning, a series of 3 powerful explosions occurred this morning, sending tens of thousands of rock and mud into the air. This occurred at one of Sumatra's most dangerous volcanoes known as Suoh. What occurred was a cluster of phreatic eruptions, which this video will explain how they formed and the general geologic setting in Indonesia.

Note: The thumbnail of today's video shows the 2018 eruption of Kilauea in Hawaii and not the 2024 eruption of Suoh in Indonesia. The reason for this is I was unable to find a high enough resolution image to use for a thumbnail for Suoh, and decided to find an image which might somewhat closely match the appearance of its second explosion.

Hundreds of dead sea lion pups have washed ashore along the California coast, and researchers are scrambling to understand why.

The phenomenon began about two weeks ago, Daniel Costa, a professor at UC Santa Cruz, told SFGATE over the phone.

"It's concerning," he said. "We've never seen anything like this."

The mystery appears to be widespread: Researchers have discovered dead pups on San Miguel Island along the Central Coast, while one of Costa's graduate students, George Colaco, counted nearly 300 deceased pups on Año Nuevo Island, off the coast near Santa Cruz. Normally, 800 pups are born on the rocky swath of land each year.

Georgetown Lake hit with a foot of snow during spring storm in Montana

mmmmmmm
Here in the Georgetown Lake area they are dealing with about a foot of snow, the really wet and heavy kind that's accumulating on all the branches, causing limbs to break and fall on powerlines. It's led to power outages, here and all over the state.

"Well, I think it's a little crazy, I just came back up from the south where it was nice and warm. I was hoping for spring, but apparently it's not coming today," said Georgetown Lake resident Joe Thomas.

Much of southwest Montana was hit with steady morning snowfall. NorthWestern Energy had crews responding to isolated power outages from Missoula to Bozeman.

"The heavy, wet snow is creating conditions for tree limbs to break or bend into power lines," said Jo Dee Black of NorthWestern Energy.
